Mesenteric cysts are rare intraabdominal tumors, which cause plain symptoms. Despite the modern imaging techniques, the correct preoperative diagnosis is difficult. The optimal treatment is surgical excision of the cysts with open surgery, laparoscopy, or even retroperitoneoscopy. Surgical excision needs to be considered in case of complaints, growing cyst, or suspicion of malignancy. Indications for urgent surgery treatment are: bleeding, volvulus, torquation or ileus. Most frequently, mesenterial cysts are diagnosed during the operation of an unknown palpable abdominal cystic resistance. We …

Mesenteric cysts are rare lesions, with 1 case per 100,000 hospital admission reported. They have to be differentiated from ovarian cysts, gastrointestinal duplications and desmoid cysts. The symptoms are variable, ranging from asymptomatic cases with incidental discovery to chronic abdominal discomfort and acute abdomen. They are usually correlated to the location and the size of the lesion. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography may lead to a correct diagnosis, which is regularly made at the time of abdominal exploration. Surgery is the treatment of choice, consisting with the rem…

Benign cystic tumors are rare intra-abdominal lesions that may be retroperitoneal, mesenteric, or omental. Most of them cause nonspecific sy … cedures in many surgical abdominal diseases. In this paper, a patient with laparoscopically excised mesenteric cyst is presented along with a literature review.

Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions. We present a case of a mesenteric cyst that was discovered by abdominal computed tomography (CT) and excised by retroperitoneoscopic surgery. There have been 10 reports of excision of mesenteric cysts by laparoscopy in the literature, but retroperitoneoscopic resection of such cysts has not been reported. This case suggests that when a mesenteric cyst arises from the ascending or descending colon, the retroperitoneal approach has a lower risk of traumatizing the bowel than does the laparoscopic intra-abdominal approach, and it does not have to…

A mesenteric cyst is defined as a cyst that is located in the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract and may extend from the base of the mesentery into the retroperitoneum. A case report of a patient with mesenteric cyst is presented. In addition, a systematic review was performed of English language literature on chylous mesenteric cysts in adult humans. Of the 18 articles included in the review, there were 19 cases of chylous mesenteric cysts reported. Male to female ratio was 1.4:1 with a median age of 46 years. A preoperative diagnosis of mesenteric cyst was made in four patients based on…

• A mesenteric hydatid cyst is very uncommon. • A mesenteric hydatid cyst can mimic as any peritoneal cystic masses. • Vague symptoms can also present as cystic lesion. • Surgery is helpful in relieving mass effect and spillage of the fluid to prevent anaphylaxis.

Gossypiboma refers to foreign bodies left inside the body during surgery, such as sponges and gauze. These foreign bodies represent a signif … onance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a well-defined calcified mass of 5 cm that was compatible with a mesenteric cyst. During surgery, the mass was found to be adherent to the mesocolon and to have invaded the colon wall. A right hemicolectomy and ileotransverse anastomosis was performed. The pathological mass was considered to be a gossypiboma that had been left b …

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of chylous mesenteric cysts (CMCs) in children.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively the clinical records of 10 children with a CMC, treated in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, between 1987 and 2008.
RESULTS: This series comprised five girls and five boys. The CMC manifested as abdominal distention (n = 9), acute abdomen (n = 8), or an asymptomatic abdominal mass (n = 1), and included five mesojejunal cysts and five mesoileal cysts. Intestinal volvulus occurred in four patients…

Retroperitoneal, mesenteric, and omental cysts are rare abdominal tumors occurring in approximately one of 105,000 hospitalized patients. These cysts have a similar pathogenesis that primarily may be ectopic lymphatic tissue. Retroperitoneal and mesenteric cysts can occur anywhere in the area between the duodenum and rectum but are most common in the small-bowel mesentery, especially the ileum. They can appear as chronic abdominal pain, a painless abdominal mass, or acute abdomen. The most common physical finding of a retroperitoneal or mesenteric cyst is a compressible abdominal mass, movable…

Of 11 infants and children with mesenteric cysts, seven patients were boys and four, girls. Clinical findings included abdominal distention, pain and vomiting in seven patients, while a movable abdominal mass was noted in four. Two patients presented with peritonitis and one patient, in a state of shock. All patients underwent laparotomy-seven as an emergency procedure. Volvulus with perforation and infarction was noted in the two patients uith peritonitis. Excision of the cyst required resection of the small intestine and end-to-end anastomosis in seven patients, while simple enucleation was …

Two cases of sudden death in young female children due to small intestinal volvulus are reported, which involved a mesenteric defect and a mesenteric cyst. Death due to small intestinal volvulus is uncommon, especially when complicated by either a mesenteric defect or cyst.

Teaching point: Computed tomography is essential for timely diagnosing infected mesenteric cysts as a cause of acute abdomen, ultimately requiring complete excision to confirm diagnosis given the potential of malignant transformation.

Mesenteric cysts are rare, and mesenteric chylous cysts are extremely rare. A case report is presented of a patient with Crohn's disease and a mesenteric chylous cyst. Included in this case report is a full discussion of the preoperative radiological work-up (including barium enema, sonogram, and CT scan), the operative findings, and the pathological findings. It is suggested that there may be a causal relationship between the Crohn's disease and the mesenteric chylous cyst.
