BACKGROUND: Listeriosis is a rare disease in cats with naturally occurring cases usually being identified in individual animals. Listerial mesenteric lymphadenitis has not been described previously in cats.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and histological features of listerial mesenteric lymphadenitis in cats as well as treatment outcome.
ANIMALS: Listerial mesenteric lymphadenitis was confirmed in 3 cats by histology, immunohistochemistry, and bacterial culture.
RESULTS: The affected cats were young to middle aged and were examined for various clinical signs. On both palpation and abd…

Tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis is a rare clinical entity and non-surgical diagnosis of this condition remains a challenge. A 38-year-old Indian woman presented with a six-week history of epigastric pain, low-grade fever and anorexia. Upper endoscopy showed a gastric ulcer of the posterior wall of the stomach. On CT scan there was a 8 cm abdominal mass involving the pancreatic body and tail and the endoscopic ultrasonography was also compatible with a cystic pancreatic tumor which had eroded into the stomach. An exploratory laparotomy was performed and the diagnosis of tuberculous mesente…

The histopathological diagnosis of Yersinia enterocolitica infections in mesenteric lymph nodes is described on the basis of biopsy material … t in only one case. The differential diagnosis is also discussed. The diseases to be considered are mesenteric lymphadenitis due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis or salmonella infection, and nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis.

Cryptococcosis is an invasive mycotic infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, an encapsulated, yeast-like fungus. It is considered an opportunist infection, since it mainly affects immunocompromised subjects. However there are isolated reports of the infection in immunocompetent subjects. Cryptococcal infection of intra-abdominal organs or tissues is extremely rare. We report a 21-year-old HIV positive male that, during the treatment of a meningeal cryptococcosis, presented a clinical picture of an acute abdomen suggesting acute appendicitis. The patient was operated, finding enlarged mes

A 17-year-old Filipina with a three-year history of intermittent, projectile vomiting and weight loss was admitted. A diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease was made, but she was unresponsive to antiulcer therapy. Fever, anorexia, cough, and exposure to tuberculosis were denied. Chest x-ray was normal. On barium swallow, the stomach and duodenal bulb were dilated. Endoscopic antral biopsy showed chronic inflammation. Computed tomography revealed enlarged periportal and peripancreatic lymph nodes and an intrahepatic mass. Liver biopsy failed to show any acid-fast bacilli. On laparotomy, the pylorodu

Suppurative mesenteric lymphadenitis is so rarely encountered and its symptoms and findings so nonspecific tht it has not yet been diagnosed preoperatively. It seems to occur mainly in children between the ages of 3 and 13 years and presents in a manner suggestive of acute appendicitis. A palpable mass may further support this diagnosis (peri-appendiceal abscess) or encourage the consideration of other diagnoses such as lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease. Even at laparotomy the diagnosis may not be immediately obvious. The organism is usually a haemolytic streptococcus, but a variety of ot…

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that can present with a wide range of symptoms. Abdominal pain is less common t … of COVID-19. Our patient's abdominal imaging findings represent a rare association of COVID-19 with mesenteric lymphadenitis in adults. The clinical course of our patient was smooth after discharge and he did not develop any complications of COVID-19 despite multiple risk factors. Our case reminds the significance of keeping broad diagnostic differentials in the emergency …

This report describes two cases of Salmonella mesenteric lymphadenitis leading to septic peritonitis in two young dogs. The cases were similar in presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and length of hospitalization. Both cases presented with clinical signs of vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever and were treated successfully via surgical debridement, omentalization, and antibiotic therapy. Both cases grew multi-drug resistant Salmonella spp. with resistance to ampicillin sulbactam, which is a common empiric antibiotic choice for cases of canine septic peritonitis. In both cases, the source of Salm…
