Conversion of Polypropylene into Light Hydrocarbons and Aromatics by Metal Exchanged Zeolite Catalysts.

Polyolefins can be converted into C2-C5 hydrocarbons and benzene-toluene-xylene (BTX) aromatics as high-demand petrochemical feedstocks via catalytic pyrolysis on acidic zeolites. Bro̷nsted and Lewis acid sites are responsible for cracking polyolefins into olefins and subsequent aromatic formation. In this study, we have subjected the parent HZSM-5 zeolite to postsynthetic partial metal exchange with Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Ce cations to perturb Bro̷nsted/Lewis acidity. We have investigated these metal-modified HZSM-5 on the catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP) in a micropyrolyzer connected t

Metal-Free 1,3-Boronate Rearrangement to Ketones Driven by Visible Light.

Boronate rearrangements, such as the Matteson and Petasis reactions, are valuable metal-free reactions for the transfer of the carbo group on boron to intramolecular electrophilic sites. However, only highly reactive electrophiles are suitable, and ketones are too inactive for those boronate rearrangements due to the high energy barriers. We disclose here the 1,3-boronate rearrangement to ketones, for which a high energy barrier (44.9 kcal/mol) is prohibitory for thermal reactions in the ground state. The reaction is enabled by the key keto-enol-boronate bidentate complex formation in situ, wh

Area-selective external light extraction for metal bus equipped large area transparent organic light-emitting diodes.

Area-selective external light extraction films based on wrinkle structured films were applied to large transparent organic light-emitting diodes (TOLEDs) with auxiliary metal buses. To be specific, on the external surface of the glass, we selectively formed a wrinkle structured film, which was aligned to the auxiliary metal electrodes. The wrinkle-structured film was patterned using a photo-mask and UV curing, which has the same shape of the auxiliary metal electrodes. With this area-selective film, it was possible to enhance the external quantum efficiencies of the bottom and top emissions TO

Light-Induced Rotation of a Molecular Motor in the Confined Space of a Metal-Organic Nanocage.

Molecular motors have been operated in a myriad of environments since their inception more than two decades ago. Of particular interest are systems in which a structural frame of reference for the motor's rotary motion is established. Examples include motors adsorbed on surfaces, embedded in framework materials, used as dopants in liquid crystals, or incorporated into polymer matrices. Embedding the molecular motor as a guest in a supramolecular cage assembly, however, remains an unexplored strategy. Such systems are particularly attractive, as they would allow the motor's rotation to drive me

Harnessing Metal-Halide Layered Perovskite Structures for Next-Generation Lighting Sources.

Advances in nanoscale semiconductor materials are enabling next-generation optoelectronic technologies with unprecedented efficiency, spectral control, and device miniaturization. Achieving this potential, however, requires the development of so-called Triple E materials, that is, systems that are environmentally friendly, economically inexpensive, and energetically efficient. Meeting these three criteria simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Metal-halide perovskites have emerged as remarkable semiconductors due to their strong optical absorption, high carrier mobility, long diffusio

Mechanistic Insights Into Metal Binding in the Aggregation Pathway of an Immunoglobulin Light Chain Protein.

Cardiac antibody light chain (AL) amyloidosis is characterized by the deposition of light chain (LC) variable domain (VL) protein in the heart. Transition metals such as copper and zinc have been suggested to enhance the toxicity of circulating soluble LCs. We show here how divalent metal ions influence the aggregation behavior of the patient-derived λ-III AL variable domain FOR005. We characterize metal binding across dimeric, monomeric, oligomeric, and fibril aggregation states, using solution- and MAS solid-state NMR spectroscopy, as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Zn2+ and Cu2

Engineering Metal-Organic Framework System for Light-Free Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a nonantibiotic alternative by leveraging light-activated photosensitizers (PSs) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) with strong bactericidal activity for bacterial elimination. However, the limited tissue penetration of external light and the hypoxic microenvironment at infection sites severely impair the therapeutic efficacy of PDT, hindering its clinical translation. In this nanosystem, glucose oxidase (GOx) loaded onto the MOF catalyzes glucose to generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which subsequently reacts with manganese dioxide (MnO2) in a cascade

Infrared-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction Realized by a Charge-Asymmetrical Metallic Conductor.

Until now, there has been a paradox in the utilization of infrared (IR) light, which carries a significant amount of solar energy (around 50% of the spectrum), for carbon dioxide (CO2) photoreduction. Given this, we propose a metallic conductor with charge-asymmetrical active sites, which realizes IR-driven CO2 reduction into C2 fuels using water as the reducing agent. Taking the CuInS2 nanosheets as an example, their metallic nature is verified by valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, which enable IR light absorption. Their charge-asymmetrical active site

Conducting 1D nanostructures from light-stimulated copper-metalated porphyrin-dibenzothiophene.

Control over the dimensionality of stimulated organic semiconductors has aroused significant interest in organic electronics; however, the design of such materials still remains to be decided. Herein, we have developed three dibenzothiophene-appended freebase, zinc-metalated and copper-metalated porphyrin derivatives (PFb-DBT, PZn-DBT and PCu-DBT) in which PCu-DBT leads to an anion-binding complex in chloroform upon the application of light, resulting in self-assembled 1D nanostructures with high electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, light-stimulated freebase and zinc-metalated P-DBT undergo

Near-White Light Emission from Lead(II) Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Reaction of bpy (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) with Pb(OAc)2·3H2O in DMF (DMF = dimethylformamide) afforded a metal-organic framework (MOF), [Pb2(μ-bpy)(μ-O2CCH3)2(μ-O2CCH3)2]·H2O (1). Reaction of bpy with Pb(O2CCF3)2 in a methanol and chloroform mixture furnished another MOF, [Pb(μ-bpy)(μ-O2CCF3)2]·1/2CHCl3 (2). However, the reaction of bpy with Pb(OAc)2·3H2O in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid in a similar reaction condition yielded a hydrogen-bonded zwitter-ionic complex of Pb(II), [Pb(bpy-H)2(O2CCF3)4] (3). All compounds have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography, FT-IR,

The impact of ultraviolet light on bacterial adhesion to glass and metal oxide-coated surface.

Biofouling of glass and quartz surfaces can be reduced when the surface is coated with photocatalytically active metal oxides, such as TiO2 (anatase form) or SnO2. We measured the attachment of eight strains of bacteria to these two metal oxides (TiO2 and SnO2), and to an uncoated glass (control; designated Si-m) before and after exposure to UV light at wavelengths of 254 nm (UVC) or 340 nm UV (UVA). TiO2-coated surfaces were photocatalytically active at both 254 and 340 nm as evidenced by a decrease in the water contact angle of the surface from 59 degrees +/-2 to <5 degrees. The water contac

Synergistic accelerated aggregation of graphdiyne and fullerene by light and metal cations in aquatic system.

The mechanism of light affecting the aggregation of nanoparticles in aquatic systems remains unclear. For both graphdiyne (GDY) and fullerene (C60), the sedimentation rates in the presence of cations and light (KL) are 1.6-9.1 times greater than that in the dark (KD), while KL and KD remain equal in the absence of cations. The light-accelerated aggregation of GDY and C60 is also observed in the presence of natural organic matter at concentrations of 5-20 mg/L. The photo-molecular effects are possibly the main factor in aggregation by excluding the increasing van der Waal forces, reducing steri

Magnon Torques Mediated by Orbital Hybridization at the Light Metal-Antiferromagnetic Insulator Interface.

Magnon torques, which can operate without involving moving electrons, could circumvent the Joule heating issue. In conventional magnon torque systems, the spin source layer with strong spin-orbit coupling is utilized to inject magnons, and the efficiency is limited by the inherent spin Hall conductivity of the spin source layer. In this Letter, we observe magnon torques in the Cr/NiO/ferromagnet heterostructure with the effective spin Hall conductivity of 2.45×10^{5}ℏ/2eΩ^{-1}  m^{-1}, twice that of the best conventional magnon torque system. We demonstrate the magnon-torque-driven switching o

High-performance transparent metal mesh electrodes utilizing a metal-vapor-desorption layer for organic light-emitting diode applications.

Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are essential for high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), particularly in transparent and flexible device architectures. Conventional TCEs such as indium tin oxide (ITO) suffer from mechanical brittleness and limited material availability, and often require sputtering processes that can damage underlying organic layers. In response, various alternatives including conductive polymers and nanomaterials or structure-based approaches of metallic films have been explored. However, many of these approaches still face limitations such as low co

Light-driven activation of metallic nanostructures in cancer therapy: from phototherapy to bioorthogonal catalysis.

Metallic nanostructures are versatile platforms for Nanomedicine due to their optical and catalytic properties. Their strong light absorption and efficient photothermal conversion have enabled photothermal therapy (PTT) to ablate tumors within the biologically transparent near-infrared windows. Recent advances in plasmonic engineering extend their role beyond heat generation, revealing their capacity to mediate photocatalytic transformations under physiologically relevant conditions. This dual modality enables the use of Au, Pt, Pd, and Ag, as well as less conventional Ru and Rh systems for ap

Metal-free, visible light activation of 4CzIPN for the radical addition of aminoalkyl radicals to allenoates.

Allenoates are versatile synthetic building blocks, yet their photocatalytic transformations remain underexplored and mostly rely on precious metal catalysts. Herein, we report a mild, noble-metal-free photocatalytic system using 4CzIPN as the photocatalyst, enabling efficient visible-light-driven addition of allenoates with Het/Ar-substituted tertiary amines. This protocol features broad substrate scope and high atom economy. Moreover, it clarifies the reaction selectivity mechanism, opening a new avenue for selective allenoate functionalization.

Transition-Metal-Free Aluminosilicate Small-Pore Zeolites Upgrade Methane to Light Olefins.

Upgrading methane to value-added chemicals is significant but still challenging. Well-designed catalysts are required to activate methane. Extensive efforts have been dedicated to the catalytic conversion of methane over transition-metal-containing catalysts. A simple aluminosilicate FER-type zeolite has been found to activate methane and nitrous oxide to methanol stably. To further diversify the catalytic properties, zeolites with different topologies were screened in the methane oxidation reaction. Here, we show that small-pore zeolites have unique advantages in the direct upgrading of metha

Visible Light-Rectified Chemiresistive Sensing in Two-Dimensional Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Photo-activated chemiresistive gas sensors using two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) hold great promise for low-power, real-time environmental monitoring; however, how visible light modulates sensing responses toward gas molecules with different characteristics remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate the gas-sensing behavior of four representative 2D c-MOFs toward oxidizing and reducing gases under red and blue light illumination, respectively. A pronounced light-rectified sensing behavior is observed across all four materials, with the respon
