Significant changes in epidemiology, etiology, and the clinical pattern of mycotic infections caused by Microsporum spp have been observed in recent years. Fungal infections caused by M canis, followed by M gypseum and M hominis, involving skin and its appendages, represent one of the most common diseases worldwide and a recalcitrant problem in dermatology that demands appropriate diagnostic and treatment strategies. The most striking clinical phenomena of superficial and kerion and other forms of tinea, such as tinea capitis, fungal infections of the glabrous skin (tinea pedis, manus, cruris …

A case of distal subungual onychomycosis of the big toe due to Microsporum canis is reported in a 69-year-old male asthma patient who had been treated with systemic corticosteroids for the last 3 years. The nail infection was contracted from a cat who was a healthy carrier. The patient was treated successfully with intermittent itraconazole therapy.

The Microsporum canis complex consists of one zoophilic species, M. canis, and two anthropophilic species, M. audouinii and M. ferrugineum. These species are the most widespread zoonotic pathogens causing dermatophytosis in cats and humans worldwide. To clarify the evolutionary relationship between the three species and explore the potential host shift process, this study used phylogenetic analysis, population structure analysis, multispecies coalescent analyses, determination of MAT idiomorph distribution, sexual crosses, and macromorphology and physicochemical features to address the above q…

CASE REPORT: The case is presented of a 3-year-old girl with an erythematous oedematous plaque associated with blepharitis, and chalazion in the right upper eyelid. She received empirical treatment with topical corticosteroids, as well as an antifungal and antibiotic, without observing any improvement. The culture of the eyelid scrape showed Microsporum canis. Therefore, she was prescribed oral terbinafine and topical miconazole-betamethasone, achieving a clinical and microbiological recovery.
DISCUSSION: Eyelid infection due to dermatophytes is uncommon, but it should be considered among the…

The present study deals with a case of a 40-day-old girl with kerion Celsi caused by Microsporum canis. The source of the infection were the parents who presented tinea corporis caused by M. canis. Systemic treatment was carried out with terbinafine and complete recovery was achieved. Tinea capitis is unusual in children during their first year of life and its evolution towards kerion is very rare in newborns.

Eleven adult patients (7 males, 4 females) were found to be infected with Microsporum canis. There was involvement of the scalp in three patients: in one male and one female there were kerion-like lesions and in one male the lesions resembled seborrheic dermatitis. There were three cases of tinea barbae, males aged 28, 65 and 82 years, in the first resembling an infected single lesion of granuloma annulare, the second with a kerion-like lesion and the third with an abscess-like tumor. There were five patients with lesions in glabrous areas: one male with a lesion of the palm resembling erythem…

Tinea capitis in men, even if infected with HIV, is infrequent. Microsporum species nail infections are extremely rare. In most cases Microsporum canis infection is usually easy to treat with antifungal agents. We describe two HIV-infected men with an unusual M. canis infection. Both patients had tinea capitis, presenting as alopecia in one and scaling of the scalp in the other. One patient also had tinea unguium caused by M. canis. Ketoconazole was ineffective in both patients; terbinafine was tried in one patient without benefit; itraconazole was effective in both, but treatment took many mo…

A healthy 15-year-old girl presented with a total dystrophic nail plate and subungual hyperkeratosis over her left 3rd fingernail. Her 2-year-old shorthair cat had circular erythematous patches of alopecia on the left aspect of its forehead. Fungal culture from the affected nail and her cat both grew Microsporum canis. The girl was treated with terbinafine with clinical and mycological cure.

Tinea capitis is considered the most frequent dermatophyte infection in children. The etiological agents vary from time to time and by geographical area, although they normally are zoophilic dermatophytes and in the last years also anthropophilic species. We report a clinical case of inflammatory tinea capitis in a 6-year-old child caused by Microsporum gypseum, a geophilic fungus pathogenic to humans and animals. The sources of human infection are soil, cats, dogs and small mammals. This species is less frequent as a cause of dermatophytosis in humans, described mainly in tinea corporis and r…

The authors report a case of tinea capitis in a woman aged 49, with a previous history of discoid lupus erythematosus. The pathogenic agent was Microsporum canis. The patient was cured after two months therapy with griseofulvin and local antimycotics.

A 25-year-old black man had generalized tinea corporis for 19 years and had associated subcutaneous mycotic granuloma of the scalp and nape of the neck for 17 years. The dermatophyte from the skin was identified as Microsporum audouinii and responded to oral griseofulvin treatment. Biopsy specimens of the subcutaneous nodules revealed yellowish granules containing masses of irregularly septated hyaline hyphae with frequent vesicles. This fungus differed only in gross colonial morphology from the M. audouinii isolated from the skin and has also been identified as M. audouinii. The subcutaneous …

We describe mycetoma caused by Microsporum canis occurring in a 9-year-old African-American girl. Pathologic evaluation showed a granulomatous dermatitis with numerous large fungal grains containing septate hyphae that were Fontana-Masson positive. Two cultures of pure grains grew M. canis. Mycetoma due to dermatophytes is very uncommon. The few instances reported have been pseudomycetoma (grains in the absence of sinus tracts). Our patient developed sinus tracts (true mycetoma). No prior reports were found of M. canis staining Fontana positive. Differentiation of dermatophyte-induced mycetoma…

We report an eight years old boy presenting with a pyogenic granuloma of the scalp, generalized alopecia, descamative plates in the neck, trunk and limbs and nail involvement. Cultures for fungus of all these lesions disclosed Microspore canis. The patient was treated with oral griseofulvin, miconazole and topical tolnaftate. Five years later and after several incomplete treatments, the patient returns with a fistulous mass of 15 x 8 cm in the dorsal area whose culture revealed Microspore canis. The mass was excised and oral ketoconazole was indicated. After three months of follow up, the pati

The aim of the study was to analyze the Microsporum canis infections in the Rijeka area, Croatia, observed between 1990 and 2001. A total of 724 cases of dermatophytosis caused by M. canis were diagnosed in 320 individuals with the tinea capitis and 404 with tinea corporis. The M. canis infections constituted 32.8% of all dermatophytes isolated during the study period.
