A quenching agent is commonly added to chlorinated, reclaimed water during sample collection to prevent chlorine-mediated die-off of viable microbiota. However, the effect of quenching on downstream 16S rRNA-based bacterial community analyses is unclear. We conducted a side-by-side comparison of 16S rRNA sequencing data from reclaimed water samples quenched with sodium thiosulfate and non-quenched samples. Our data showed that 16 S rRNA processing and sequencing methods, and resulting bacterial profiles, were not negatively impacted by quenching.

In this study, variability in reported Lyme disease incidence between 1993 and 2001 was analyzed in seven states in the northeastern part of the USA. Positive significant correlations at p < 0.05 were found in all states between early summer disease incidence and the June moisture index in the region two years prior. These correlations may reflect an enhanced nymphal Ixodes scapularis survival under wetter conditions. BACKGROUND: The usage and attitudes towards medical marijuana in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients is unknown. Through the use of a survey we aim to clarify rates and reasons for use.
METHODS: An anonymous survey was sent out to six centers in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Use of and reason for medical marijuana was assessed, along with attitudes of the perceived utility of medical marijuana.

Chromium is a naturally occurring transition metal and a soil contaminant in the Cr(VI) oxidation state, but reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) mitigates its toxicity. Tartaric acid reduces Cr(VI) via a termolecular complex with isopropyl alcohol and Cr(VI), but its efficacy in soils has not been demonstrated. Five Mid-Atlantic soils from Maryland, U.S. were examined for their potential to enhance the reduction of Cr(VI). BACKGROUND: Young adults are a population at great risk for problematic health behaviors. Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) consumption is a relatively popular health risk behavior among young adults. OBJECTIVE: Research has consistently shown that incarcerated women experience mental illness at disproportionate rates and heavily use psychiatric medication. This study examined factors related to incarcerated women's experiences and beliefs about psychotropic medications.
METHODS: The researchers conducted a survey with 274 women incarcerated at a medium-security correctional institution in a Mid-Atlantic state. In the current review, we examine the regional history, ecology, and epidemiology of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) to investigate the major drivers of disease outbreaks in the northeastern United States. Changes in breast self-exam screening recommendations may reduce nurse practitioner (NP) time addressing breast health.
