[Milk fever].

Infectious complications following delivery were, in the past, attributed to "milk fever": these were milk congestion, milk deposits, rancid milk, etc., that were held responsible. The milk was reabsorbed into the blood of the patient and settled in the peritoneum ("milk peritonitis"), in the broad ligaments (pelvic abscess), in the thighs (phlebitis) and also in the breasts (breast abscess). This belief, originated by Aristotle, was accepted by excellent authors like Andre Levret (1703-1780), one of the most famous French obstetricians and Nicolas Puzos, at the same time. More recently, autho…

[Cow's milk challenges in gastrointestinal cow's milk allergic diseases].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the clinical features of gastrointestinal cow's milk allergy in children, and to assess the importance of cow's milk challenge. METHOD: An analysis was performed on the clinical manifestations and the challenge results of 50 children who received cow's milk challenges after admission to the department of gastroenterology, Children' s Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine from January,2009 to December, 2012. The value of immunoglobulin E antibody was also analyzed among the 50 children, 25 cases were male and the other 25 were female. The youngest subject …

[Significance of milk antibodies in cow's milk protein intolerance].

Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance (CMPI) is the most common food intolerance in childhood. The I, III and IV type of the immunological mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis. Nowadays there are no diagnostic tests with good reliability excluding the IgE-mediated clinical pictures. Recently the evaluation of antibodies (IgA and IgG classes) versus milk proteins has been proposed as reliable test. In order to establish the pattern of antibody response against milk proteins we studied 37 children (17 males and 20 females), aged from 3 months to 6 years, divided as follows: 23 with CMPI of which…

High milk lipase activity associated with breast milk jaundice.

Human milk samples that inhibit bilirubin-UDP-glucuronyl transferase (UDPGT) activity in vitro have been associated with prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in newborn infants. We measured the concentration of nonesterified fatty acids (total and individual fatty acids), total fat and protein, and lipase activities (with and without bile salt stimulation) in milk samples from two groups of women. Women whose infants had prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia and whose milk inhibited the activity of UDPGT were in the first group (N = 9). Volunteers with healthy infants acted as control…

Growth and development of rats artificially reared on rats' milk or rats' milk/milk-substitute combinations.

Rat pups were artificially reared (AR) from post-natal day 5 by intermittent gastric infusion. Mother-reared (MR) siblings served as controls. Fourteen measures of body and organ growth were taken at the end of each experiment. In Expt 1, two batches of pups were given rats' milk only, obtained by manual expression from anaesthetized dams. The first batch, reared to 12 d, grew less well than the MR group, probably because they received too little milk. However, relative to body-weight, organ weights were as great or greater than those of MR pups, except for heart weight. The second batch, give…

Milk Curd Obstruction in Human Milk-Fed Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Milk curd obstruction as a cause of intestinal obstruction has been known since 1959, but has nearly disappeared. However, in recent years it has experienced a revival in small premature infants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of milk curd obstruction (lactobezoar) in preterm infants. METHODS: Data of preterm infants with milk curd obstruction cared for at a large tertiary neonatal intensive care unit between 2012 and 2016 were retrieved from the electronic registry and paper records. RESULTS: A total of 10 infants (2 girls, 8 boys)…

The effects of human milk fortification on nutrients and milk properties.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of fortification and storage on nutrients and properties of various human milk (HM) types. STUDY DESIGN: Mother's own milk (MOM) and pasteurized donor human milk (DHM; n=118) were analyzed pre- and post fortification with Enfamil and Similac human milk fortifier (EHMF and SHMF) before and after 24 h of refrigerated storage. RESULTS: Milk fortified with SHMF had significantly greater osmolality, pH and lipase activity than EHMF. Changes in protein, pH and osmolality following refrigerated storage differed between fortifiers. When milk type was factored in…
