Advance Care Planning Among Sexual Minority Men: Sociodemographic, Health Care, and Health Status Predictors.

Objectives: Advance care planning (ACP) specifies decision-making surrogates and preferences for serious illness or end-of-life medical care. ACP research has largely neglected sexual minority men (SMM), a population that experiences disparities in health care and health status. Methods: We examined formal and informal ACP among SMM ages 40+ in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (N = 1,071). Results: For informal ACP (50%), younger SMM and men with past cardiovascular events had greater odds of planning; single men had lower odds of planning. For formal ACP (39%), SMM with greater socioeconomic

Explaining behavioral health differences in urban and rural sexual minority adolescents: A longitudinal investigation of minority stress in a diverse national sample of sexual minority adolescents: A longitudinal investigation of minority stress in a diverse national sample of sexual minority adolescents.

PURPOSE: Experiences of sexuality-based discrimination (ie, minority stressors) against youth who identify as nonheterosexual (ie, sexual minority) have been associated with increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for sexual minority adolescents (SMA; ages 14-17). However, little is known about the experiences of SMA living in rural communities across the United States. Thus, the present study sought to examine differences in mental health patterns between urban and rural dwelling SMA, and to see whether these differences are, at least in part, expl

Differences in Ideal Cardiovascular Health Between Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Research on the cardiovascular health (CVH) of sexual minority adults has primarily examined differences in the prevalence of individual CVH metrics rather than comprehensive measures, which has limited development of behavioral interventions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate sexual identity differences in CVH, measured using the American Heart Association's revised measure of ideal CVH, among adults in the US. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed population-based data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES; 2007-2016) in June

Intimate Partner Violence and the Sexual Health of Sexual Minority Men.

Purpose: This qualitative study explores the pathways by which various forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) impact the sexual health behaviors of cisgender identified sexual minority men (SMM). Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 racially and ethnically diverse SMM who recently experienced IPV and 10 clinical and social service providers focused on how experiences of IPV directly or indirectly influences sexual risk as well as engagement in HIV prevention behaviors (e.g., pre-exposure prophylaxis [PrEP] use). Applied thematic analysis, including cycles of analytic me

Rape Acknowledgment and Sexual Minority Women's Mental Health and Drinking Behaviors.

Adult sexual assault (ASA) has been linked to numerous negative psychological and behavioral outcomes. Recent research suggests that postassault adaptation may differ based on how the victim conceptualizes their ASA. For instance, women who label their rape experiences as such (i.e., acknowledged rape victims) report worse mental health symptoms than women who do not (i.e., unacknowledged rape victims). To date, this literature has focused exclusively on heterosexual women. Relative to heterosexuals, sexual minority women (SMW) are at greater risk for sexual assault and report worse postassaul

Chlamydia trachomatis Infection in minority adolescent women: a public health challenge.

UNLABELLED: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. This disease disproportionately affects adolescent minority women, and untreated infection can lead to lasting reproductive tract morbidity. Recommendations for primary prevention include patient counseling to decrease risky behavior and increase barrier protection use; secondary prevention recommendations include screening and treatment of affected individuals and their sexual partners, barrier contraception use, as well as counseling to decrease behaviors that lead to reinfecti

Health consequences of racist and antigay discrimination for multiple minority adolescents.

Individuals who belong to a marginalized group and who perceive discrimination based on that group membership suffer from a variety of poor health outcomes. Many people belong to more than one marginalized group, and much less is known about the influence of multiple forms of discrimination on health outcomes. Drawing on literature describing the influence of multiple stressors, three models of combined forms of discrimination are discussed: additive, prominence, and exacerbation. The current study examined the influence of multiple forms of discrimination in a sample of African American lesbi

Victimization, smoking, and chronic physical health problems among sexual minority women.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW) have been shown to be at increased risk for abuse, smoking, and chronic physical health problems compared with heterosexual women. In the general population, abuse and smoking are associated with physical health problems. However, there has been little research on their associations among SMW. PURPOSE: The current study examined a mediational model of abuse, smoking, and self-reported physical health conditions in a national sample of SMW. METHODS: Participants (N = 1,224) were recruited via the Internet and completed measures of childhood trauma, adul

Sexual victimization in minors and mental health issues.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual victimization in children and adolescents is a serious form of child abuse that violates the rights of children and adolescents, and that can lead to negative consequences for their mental health. The present research tries to analyze the relation existing between being a victim of sexual violence and mental health problems. METHOD: A total of 519 students participated, aged between 10 and 18 years (M = 12.49; SD = 1.949), belonging to primary and secondary schools, 246 were female (47.39%), and 273 (52.60%) were male. Mental health of sexual minorities. A systematic review.

Many studies, reviews, and meta-analyses have reported elevated mental health problems for sexual minority (SM) individuals. This systematic review provides an update by including numerous recent studies, and explores whether SM individuals are at increased risk across selected mental health problems as per dimensions of sexual orientation (SO), genders, life-stages, geographic regions, and in higher quality studies. A systematic search in PubMed produced 199 studies appropriate for review. A clear majority of studies reported elevated risks for depression, anxiety, suicide attempts or suicide

Health of Bi+ Dementia Caregivers: Moderation Effects of Minority and Caregiving Stress.

Despite comprising the largest segment of the sexual minority population and experiencing unique stressors and health disparities, bi+ dementia caregivers remain underrepresented in health and caregiving research. This secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from LGBTQ+ dementia caregivers (bi+, n = 125; gay[g]/lesbian[l], n = 161) examined whether associations between minority and caregiving stressors and global health differed by caregiver group. Bi+ caregivers reported significantly higher minority stress and lower family quality of life but better health than g/l caregivers. Mode

Minority Stress, Discrimination, and Health Outcomes Among LGBTQ+ Older Adult Dementia Caregivers.

Using LGBTQ+ Social Networks, Aging, and Policy Study Wave 3 data (N = 982), this study examines how caregiving for individuals with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias (MCI/ADRD) impacts everyday stressors, discrimination, and health outcomes among LGBTQ+ older adults in the Southern United States. Using chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and logistic regression models, we assessed associations of caregiver role with stress and health outcomes. We then conducted moderation analyses to test interactions between caregiver role and LGBTQ+ minority stress. L
