[Moth fragments as intraocular foreign bodies].

The authors describe an accident leading to penetration of the eye of an 11-year-old boy by an unusual foreign body, and the subsequent diagnosis and treatment. Persistent ocular irritation following a corneal perforation wound, in spite of appropriate treatment, led to the presence of an intraocular foreign body being suspected. The results of radiologic examination, including CT (Siemens Somatom 2), were negative. Only A-scan sonography (Kretztechnik 7002) called attention to the possibility of a foreign body in the vitreous behind the traumatic cataract. Extracapsular extraction was immedia

Delusional Parasitosis Without Cutaneous Presentation: "I Have Moths in My Belly".

Delusional parasitosis is a psychiatric illness characterized by a false belief of a parasite infestation, despite evidence to the contrary. The disorder typically presents as a dermatologic condition since patients often itch and pick at their skin to relieve the perceived infestation. Patients often have numerous cutaneous lesions that never heal due to persistent picking. Another hallmark presentation known as the "matchbox sign" has patients collecting "evidence" of their perceived infestation. This patient believed that he had "moths" infesting his stomach, creating "web-like" structures …

Caterpillars and moths: Part I. Dermatologic manifestations of encounters with Lepidoptera.

Caterpillars are the larval forms of moths and butterflies and belong to the order Lepidoptera. Caterpillars, and occasionally moths, have evolved defense mechanisms, including irritating hairs, spines, venoms, and toxins that may cause human disease. The pathologic mechanisms underlying reactions to Lepidoptera are poorly understood. Lepidoptera are uncommonly recognized causes of localized stings, eczematous or papular dermatitis, and urticaria. Part I of this two-part series on caterpillars and moths reviews Lepidopteran life cycles, terminology, and the epidemiology of caterpillar and moth…

TSSKL is essential for sperm mitochondrial morphogenesis and male fertility in moths.

Sperm deliver male genomic DNA to the ovum, playing a pivotal role in sexual reproduction across the animal kingdom. The molecular regulation of sperm morphogenesis has consequently become a focal point of genetic research, with dual implications for both reproductive medicine and sustainable agriculture. Here, we characterize the functional role of the testis-specific serine/threonine protein kinase-like (TSSKL) gene in the model lepidopteran insect Bombyx mori and the globally destructive crop pest Plutella xylostella. RNA-seq and qPCR analyses revealed TSSKL's testis-specific expression pat

Size and dispersion of urticating setae in three species of processionary moths.

Larvae of the processionary moths of the Palaearctic region bear urticating setae that are released against vertebrate predators, especially insectivorous birds. A few species are pests of forest and urban trees and, consequently, may threaten human and animal health during outbreaks, causing dermatitis, conjunctivitis and respiratory distress. Although some studies provide detailed information about the setae, particularly those of the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa, there is little knowledge on the morphological traits of the setae and their release by the larvae. In the pre…

The Scaling of Olfaction: Moths have Relatively More Olfactory Surface Area than Mammals.

Body size affects nearly every aspect of locomotion and sensing, but little is known of its influence on olfaction. One reason for this miss … s study, we report the surface area and sensory neuron density in olfactory organs of 95 species of moths and mammals. We find that approximately 12-14% of an olfactory system's surface area is devoted to chemosensors. Furthermore, total olfactory surface area and olfactory sensing surface area scale with body mass to the 0.49 and 0.38 powers, respectiv …

Wingtip folds and ripples on saturniid moths create decoy echoes against bat biosonar.

Sensory coevolution has equipped certain moth species with passive acoustic defenses to counter predation by echolocating bats.1,2 Some large silkmoths (Saturniidae) possess curved and twisted biosonar decoys at the tip of elongated hindwing tails.3,4 These are thought to create strong echoes that deflect biosonar-guided bat attacks away from the moth's body to less essential parts of their anatomy. We found that closely related silkmoths lacking such hindwing decoys instead often possess intriguing ripples and folds on the conspicuously lobed tips of their forewings. The striking analogy of t…

Innervation and neural regulation of the sex pheromone gland in female Heliothis moths.

Female Heliothis moths normally produce their species-specific male attractant (sex pheromone blend) during scotophase, and this production is stimulated by pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN), presumably carried in the hemolymph. Several lines of evidence indicate that the central nervous system plays another critical role in this regulation. Pheromone biosynthesis was induced during photophase by electrical stimulation of the ventral nerve cord or the peripheral nerves projecting from the terminal abdominal ganglion to the pheromone gland in the tip of the abdomen. Electron…

Moth-Eaten Pattern of Alopecia in Lichen Planopilaris.

Moth-eaten pattern of alopecia can be seen in various dermatological conditions, including lichen planopilaris (LPP). Clinical, trichoscopic, and histopathology correlation can give a clue to the etiology of moth-eaten pattern of alopecia. Since alopecia in LPP is permanent, early recognition and treatment are necessary to prevent progression of scarring.

Serotonin modulation of moth central olfactory neurons.

In the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) acting at the level of the antennal lobes contributes significantly to changing the moth's responsiveness to olfactory stimuli. 5HT targets K(+) conductances in the cells, increasing the excitability of central olfactory neurons and their responsiveness to olfactory cues. Effects of 5HT modulation are apparent not only at the single cell level, but also in the activity patterns of populations of neurons that convey olfactory information from antennal lobes to higher centers of the brain. Evidence suggests that 5HT-induced change

Beta diversity of Arctiinae moths (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) along a recovering tropical forest gradient.

Amid widespread biodiversity loss and alarming rates of tropical deforestation, the potential of secondary forest succession in restoring β-diversity is still widely unexplored. To investigate β-diversity along naturally recovering forests, we collected the functionally diverse group of tiger moths (Erebidae: Arctiinae) with light traps in the Ecuadorian Chocó. Our plots ranged from active small-scale agricultural lands over natural regrowth stages (1-38 years) to old-growth forests. Along this gradient of increasing forest complexity, fundamental ecological theory predicts a rise in taxonomic…

No evidence of fine-scale local adaptation of winter moths to variable tree phenology.

After years of reliance on transfusion alone to address anemia and suppress ineffective erythropoiesis in β-thalassemia, many new therapies are now in development. Luspatercept, a transforming growth factor-β inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing ineffective erythropoiesis, improving anemia, and possibly reducing iron loading. However, many patients do not respond to luspatercept, so additional therapeutics are needed. Several medications in development aim to induce hemoglobin F (HbF): sirolimus, benserazide, and IMR-687 (a phosphodiesterase 9 inhibitor). Another group of agents se

Chlorantraniliprole as a candidate pesticide used in combination with the attracticides for lepidopteran moths.

Methomyl is currently used as a toxicant for the attracticide BioAttract in cotton and vegetables in China. However, methomyl is highly toxic to non-target organisms and a more environmental friendly acceptable alternative is required. Larvae of three lepidopteran insects Helicoverpa armigera, Agrotis ipsilon and Spodoptera litura are important pests of these crops in China. In the present study, the toxicity of 23 commonly used insecticides were tested on H. armigera, then tested the susceptibility of A. ipsilon and S. litura moths to the insecticides which were the most toxic to H. armigera,…

Female and male moths display different reproductive behavior when facing new versus previous mates.

Multiple mating allows females to obtain material (more sperm and nutrient) and/or genetic benefits. The genetic benefit models require sperm from different males to fertilize eggs competitively or the offspring be fathered by multiple males. To maximize genetic benefits from multiple mating, females have evolved strategies to prefer novel versus previous mates in their subsequent matings. However, the reproductive behavior during mate encounter, mate choice and egg laying in relation to discrimination and preference between sexes has been largely neglected. In the present study, we used novel
