Motion sickness affects approximately 90 percent of the population at some time during life, and for many the problem is recurrent and severe. Labyrinthine-defective individuals are "immune." Adaptation is highly specific to one type of motion. Recent studies have focused on the role of the limbic system in mechanisms of motion sickness. Medications are sometimes useful, but they have a high incidence of side effects. Oral agents are ineffective after symptoms develop.

The adverse symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS) have remained problematic since the beginning of manned spaceflight. Despite over 50 yr of research SMS remains a problem that affects about half of all space travelers during the first 24-72 h of a spaceflight. SMS has been treated as another form of motion sickness (MS) despite distinct differences in symptomology. In this review SMS and MS differences are examined and documented based on available data. Vestibular biomechanics that occur during weightlessness coupled with theoretical assertions regarding human evolution have led us to prop…

This review describes symptoms of space motion sickness (SMS) observed in many cosmonauts during the first day in orbit. It also discusses similar symptoms detected in them upon return to the Earth which constitute the readaptation syndrome. The paper gives a detailed discussion of different theories that explain the etiology and pathogenesis of SMS and the post-flight readaptation syndrome, viz, sensory conflict or sensory mismatch, disorders in the labyrinthine paired function, and blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. It is emphasized that none of the theories used separately can…

Space motion sickness, presumably triggered by sudden entry into a weightless environment, occurred with unexpected frequency and severity among astronauts who flew the Skylab missions. Recovery from symptoms was complete within 3-5 days, and as revealed by the Skylab M131 Human Vestibular Function Experiment, all crewmembers were immune to experimentally induced motion sickness after mission day 8. This syndrome has been recognized as a possible threat to the early mission well-being and operational efficiency of at least some individuals who will fly space missions in the future. The causes …
