Between 1995 and 2000 twenty-two patients were treated for frontal sinus mucocele in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Medical University of Warsaw. History and physical examination revealed several-year-old chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in all but one cases. Thirteen patients had been previously operated on for this reason at least once. Conservative management, mainly in periods of symptom deterioration, was applied in other patients. The only patient with negative history of CRS had undergone in the past head injury with fracture and dislocation of the anterior wall of the frontal sin…

A 21-year-old man was admitted to hospital because of recent anosmia and liquorrhoea. He also complained of moderate headache and concentration problems in the past few years. On CT scan and MRI scans a big subfrontal process was seen, partially solid and partially cystic. Neurosurgical and histological findings proved that the lesion was an osteoma of the anterior skull base, concomitant with an intradurally extending mucocele.

Sphenoid sinus mucocele is a rare entity that can occur alone or as a result of ethmoid sinusitis and polyposis. A myriad of presentations is possible due to the presence of important contiguous neurologic and vascular structures. Past surgical approaches to the sphenoid sinus have problems associated with them. The endoscopic sinus technique offers outstanding visualization and a safe, straight-forward approach to the sphenoid sinus. Four patients with documented mucocele of the sphenoid sinus were treated successfully with endoscopic sinus surgery. The technique involves partial removal of t…

Although not uncommon, and certainly not rare, frontal sinus mucocele was seen in 4 cases by the authors. Since one of the cases was rather unusual, we were prompted to evaluate the subject and prepare this manuscript. Gradual onset of unilateral proptosis should make one suspicious of a mucocele involving the paranasal sinuses, the frontal and ethmoid being the 2 most common locations. Diplopia, due to limited ocular motility on upward gaze, along with proptosis and epiphora are frequently the presenting symptoms which, in one particular case, paradoxically improved at first with topical anti…

OBJECTIVE: In what follows, it is extremely rare for the inferior turbinate to occur with a mucocele. The authors aim to evaluate the characteristics, clinical features, and treatment outcome of the inferior turbinate mucocele in our hospital.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five patients with radiologically confirmed inferior turbinate mucocele between January 2006 and December 2017 were enrolled in this study.
RESULTS: Out of the 5 patients with inferior turbinate mucocele reviewed, 2 out of the 5 patients had symptoms of nasal obstruction and headache respectively, whereas the other 3 remaining pat…

Mucoceles of the frontal sinus are expansive cysts filled of the mucus secreted by goblet cells interspersed in the ciliated mucosa. The aim of this article was to present a case of a frontal mucocele that was developed in a 31-year-old man 19 years after having had a frontal sinus fracture. This is a rare entity. Frontal sinus fractures must be treated by a multidisciplinary team to avoid all possible sequelae. An adequate primary management of frontal sinus fractures is essential to prevent complications. This may include conservative attitude, reduction and fixation with miniplates, obliter…

Sphenoid sinus mucoceles are uncommon lesions, and may rarely contain calcifications within their wall. We describe a new appearance of this lesion--sphenoid sinus mucocele with gross calcifications within its matrix.

Mucocele of the appendix is a term used to describe a dilated, mucin-filled appendix. It is most commonly the result of epithelial proliferation, but can be caused by inflammation or obstruction of the appendix. Two cases of mucocele of the appendix are presented with a discussion of the histologic and radiologic features as well as the surgical management.

INTRODUCTION: Mucoceles of the appendix are infrequent entities and are found in only 0.25% of all appendectomies and 8% of all appendicular tumors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe 27 cases of mucocele of the appendix treated at Donostia Hospital between January 1978 and December 2006.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 54.4 +/- 21.7 years (range: 17-88). Of the 27 patients, 15 (55.5%) were males and 12 (44.5%) were females. Emergency surgery was performed in 17 patients (62.9%). Mucoceles were identified as operative findings during surgery for other reasons in seven patients (25.9…
