Muir-Torre syndrome: a case of this uncommon entity.

A 69-year-old Hispanic woman presented for the evaluation of nodules on the head and back. In the past, she had been treated for basal cell … s required for these benign sebaceous tumors, but their presence defined our patient's condition as Muir-Torre syndrome. Mohs' micrographic surgery was performed on the tragus BCC and the margins were tumor free in one stage. The patient returned 1 year later with a lesion anterior to the left axilla which was biopsied to rule out BCC (Fig. 3). Histologically, this l …

Muir-Torre syndrome: role of the dermatopathologist in diagnosis.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder characterized by sebaceous lesions and visceral malignancies. The defect is thought to be the result of a mutation in mismatch repair genes and associated with microsatellite instability. Two cases whose diagnoses were suggested first by the dermatopathologist are discussed. The first is a 47-year-old white man who over the past 6 years developed multiple sebaceous lesions. Due to the number of sebaceous lesions and their morphology, the possible diagnosis of MTS was suggested by the dermatopathologist. Subsequently, a les…

[Mutation in the MSH2 gene in Muir-Torre syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The Muir-Torre syndrome is an autosomal dominant hereditary condition predisposing to cancer. It is characterized by skin tumors associated with adenocarcinoma of the colon or other neoplasias observed in the context of hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). The Muir-Torre syndrome is also characterized by the frequent presence of multiple colonic polyps and the relatively moderate aggressivity of the tumors. CASE REPORT: We studied a family with Muir-Torre syndrome. We sequenced the exons of the hMSH2 gene in this family and identified heterozygous germinal mutation …

Torre-Muir syndrome. An association with isolated sebaceous carcinoma.

Three cases of Torre-Muir syndrome are described in which isolated sebaceous carcinomas were associated with internal malignancy. The first was a 66-year-old woman who had a sebaceous carcinoma in association with carcinoma of the uterus, two adenocarcinomas of colon, carcinoma of renal pelvis and bladder, and a squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. The second was a 78-year-old woman who had a sebaceous carcinoma associated with carcinomas of the colon, ovary, and pancreas. The third patient had a sebaceous carcinoma associated with breast cancer. The subject is discussed and the previously rep

Diagnostic error: what Muir-Torre syndrome has taught us.

A low-grade sebaceous carcinoma was excised from a 55-year-old woman's neck. At follow-up, 11 months later, a recent diagnosis of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the colon and history of clear cell endometrial carcinoma were identified. A strong family history of bowel cancer suggested Muir-Torre syndrome. Unexpectedly, hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer had previously been genetically confirmed; the results were found loosely filed in the paper chart. The patient had not informed us about her diagnosis; having discussed the case with other physicians she felt the diagnosis would be common …

Postradiation Histiocytic Sarcoma in the Setting of Muir-Torre Syndrome.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by a predisposition towards colorectal carcinoma and other extracolonic neoplasms. Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a very rare hematologic neoplasm characterized by a malignant proliferation of cells with histiocytic differentiation. We present the case of a 62-year-old male with previous diagnosis of MTS who presented with metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma, bilateral papillary renal cell carcinoma, and a new squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp, treated with resection and adjuvant radia

Muir-Torre syndrome in a patient with advanced duodenal carcinoma.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies and is regarded as a phenotypic variant of Lynch syndrome. Although colorectal and genitourinary cancers are the most common visceral malignancies in MTS, duodenal cancer is extremely rare. We report a case of advanced duodenal cancer associated with MTS treated with multidisciplinary therapy. A 62-year-old man with a history of multiple colorectal cancers and sebaceous carcinomas presented with vomiting and epigastric pain. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a …

Muir-Torre syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS), a subtype of Lynch syndrome II, presents as at least one internal malignancy associated with at least one sebaceous skin tumor. This autosomal-dominant genetic disorder is thought to arise from microsatellite instability. Although not all patients with sebaceous tumors have MTS, even a single biopsy-proven sebaceous adenoma may warrant evaluation for MTS. We report the case of a 76-year-old man with a marked family history of colon cancer; a personal history of colon cancer status post-partial resection of the colon; and multiple cutaneous neoplasms including sebaceo…

[Muir-Torre syndrome. Diagnostic criteria and review of the literature].

We report on a 63-year-old female patient with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS). In the course of this disease two carcinomas of the colon, a kerato-acanthoma and multiple sebaceous gland tumours, including four sebaceous carcinomas, appeared. This case is thought to be a hereditary form as one of daughters was also found to have a sebaceous epithelioma. MTS is a mostly autosomal-dominant disease with the association of sebaceous gland tumours and internal carcinomas. As the malignant tumours only show slight aggressiveness the prognosis is quite favourable. Oral isotretinoin therapy was successfully…

Clinical and Molecular Features of Skin Malignancies in Muir-Torre Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the mutational landscape of skin tumors in patients with Muir-Torre Syndrome (MTS) a hereditary autosomal dominant mismatch repair disorder of increased cancer susceptibility, and examined mutations other than in the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. METHODS: This retrospective single-center case series included seven patients with the diagnosis of Muir-Torre Syndrome with precise medical history and family history. Mutational analysis of tumor samples Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of skin lesions associated with Muir-Torre Syndrome were used for fu…

A case of Muir-Torre syndrome on [18F]FDG PET/CT.

Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a rare genetic disorder, considered a subtype of Lynch syndrome, that causes sebaceous cutaneous tumors and increases the risk of internal visceral tumors. We present a case of a 63-year-old male with a history of MTS with sebaceous tumors, colorectal, and urothelial cancers who underwent fluorine-18-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography/ computed tomography [18F]FDG PET/CT to follow-up on multiple [18F]FDG avid skin lesions and right pelvic lymph nodes. Although few reports are available detailing the utility of [18F]FDG PET/CT in this rare disease, this modal…

Eyelid sebaceous carcinoma associated with Muir-Torre syndrome in two cases.

We report the rare but serious association between sebaceous carcinoma of eyelid and Muir-Torre syndrome in two cases, a 79-year-old woman and 54-year-old man. The presenting sign was a yellow-pink nodule with telangiectatic vessels on the left lower eyelid in one patient and a yellowish-red, pedunculated lesion with intrinsic vascularization on the right superior tarsal conjunctiva in the other. A history of multiple primary colon cancers was present in both patients, associated transitional cell carcinoma of bladder and renal cancer in one patient and prostate cancer in the other. Both patie…

Muir-Torre syndrome: a case for surveillance of the ampulla of Vater.

A 64-year-old man with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS), a condition characterized by the association of multiple sebaceous tumours and kerato-acanthomas with internal malignancies, developed a carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. This is the 2nd reported ampullary carcinoma in 205 reported cases of MTS, suggesting a higher prevalence in MTS patients than in the general population. As an ampullary carcinoma is potentially amenable to surgical resection, particularly when detected early, patients with MTS should undergo regular endoscopic surveillance of the ampulla of Vater.

A case report of Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) in a Chinese patient.

BACKGROUND: Muir-Torre syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by patients suffering from sebaceous gland tumors or keratoacanthoma and visceral malignancies. More cases have been reported in Europe than in Asia. In this study, we report a case of MTS in China. CASE PRESENTATION: A 64 -year-old woman presented with a growth on the left upper eyelid noticed 3 months prior. Ancillary examinations include orbital CT, Ultrasound of parotid and submandibular glands, and Ultrasound of the cervical lymph nodes. All showed no clear abnormalities. Eyelid tumors were removed after general anesthesia.…

Cutaneous sebaceous neoplasms as markers of Muir-Torre syndrome: a diagnostic algorithm.

Sebaceous gland neoplasms such as adenoma, epithelioma, and carcinoma are uncommon cutaneous tumors. Although sporadic, their occurrence is clinically significant because of their association with Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS). MTS is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by the occurrence of sebaceous gland neoplasms and/or keratoacanthomas associated with visceral malignancies that include gastrointestinal and genitourinary cancers. MTS is usually the result of germline mutation in one or more of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. MMR genes commonly implicated include MSH-2 an…

Colorectal cancer and the Muir-Torre syndrome in a Gypsy family: a review.

OBJECTIVES: The Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is characterized by an autosomal dominant predilection to sebaceous adenomas, sebaceous carcinomas, and multiple keratoacanthomas, in concert with the cancer phenotype of hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Proof that patients showing a familial aggregation of MTS's cutaneous signs in combination with a specific pattern of visceral cancers which are consonant with an HNPCC diagnosis has been buttressed by the discovery of hMSH2 and hMLH1 germ-line mutations in such families. Our purpose in this investigation was to determine the germ-lin…
