Multifocal versus monofocal intraocular lenses after cataract extraction.

BACKGROUND: Good unaided distance visual acuity is now a realistic expectation following cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Near vision however still requires additional refractive power usually in the form of reading glasses. Multiple optic (multifocal) IOLs are available which claim to allow good vision at a range of distances. It is unclear whether this benefit outweighs the optical compromises inherent in multifocal IOLs. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of multifocal IOLs, including effects on visual acuity, subjective visual satis

[Multifocal, toric, and aspheric intraocular lenses for glaucoma patients].

Cataract surgery has greatly developed over recent years, mainly due to the introduction and availability of newer intraocular lenses (IOLs) with modern platforms and better visual outcomes. Aspheric, multifocal, and toric lenses are among these new lenses. Glaucomatous eyes have a number of particularities that can influence the way these implants are indicated and used. Contrast sensitivity is usually reduced in eyes with glaucoma and, sometimes, a poor IOL choice can aggravate the disease. Small pupils and zonular weakness are frequently associated with certain types of glaucoma (e.g. pseud

[Surgical correction of presbyopia with multifocal diffractive intraocular lenses].

The authors analyzed the results of binocular refractive lens exchange with a pseudoaccomodative AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) in 24 patients (48 eyes) aged 40 to 61 years. Preoperative hyperopic refraction ranged from 1.0 to 6.0 diopters. One week postoperatively, a high percentage of the operated eyes had fine results of uncorrected distance and near visual acuity; the mean contrast sensitivity was found to be slightly reduced at high frequencies. 87.5% of the patients were completely satisfied with the results of binocular AcrySof ReSTOR implantation. Refracti

Multifocal and Extended Depth-of-Focus Intraocular Lenses in 2020.

Ophthalmic surgeons have been overwhelmed by the influx of multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) options in recent years, with close to 100 IOLs on the market in 2020. This practical and technical update on a representative group of established as well as newly launched multifocal IOLs on the market focuses on multifocal IOLs, including extended depth-of-focus lenses. We also describe the optical basis of lens platforms used and thorough preoperative planning to aid decision making. This allows the surgeon the knowledge base to deliver the required relative customized spectacle independence with t

[Use of multifocal intraocular lenses and criteria for patient selection].

Multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOL) are increasingly being used as a therapeutic approach to correct presbyopia. To guarantee patient satisfaction, it is important to be aware of the different IOL properties and patient inclusion criteria. A differentiated patient selection in combination with optimized perioperative and postoperative management is necessary to achieve appropriate postoperative refractive results and patient satisfaction.

[Refraction after Implantation of Multifocal and Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses].

Nowadays, further developments in the field of intraocular lenses offer a higher level of spectacle independence for our patients. As light gets scattered on different focal points a wider range of defocus is created. This greater defocus area makes it more difficult for us to determine the objective or subjective refraction. This contribution is concerned with the difficulties of measuring visual acuity in different intraocular lens designs and different measurement distances. Measuring refraction after implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens is a complex procedure and the experience of

Non-organic Visual Loss in Patients with Multifocal Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: To report non-organic visual loss (NOVL) following cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: After reviewing consecutive cases of NOVL diagnosed by a single neuro-ophthalmologist over a one year period, two patients reported herein attributed their visual symptoms to cataract surgery and multifocal IOL implantation. RESULTS: In both patients variability was noted in visual function and kinetic perimetry demonstrated non-organic visual field loss. Initially, refractive surgeons considered lens exchange, which was avoided after neuro-ophthalmic eva
