[Poisoning with selected mushrooms with neurotropic and hallucinogenic effect].

Picking mushrooms, especially in summer and autumn, is still very popular in Poland. Despite raising awareness of poisonous mushrooms in the Polish society, year after year hospitals treat many patients diagnosed with poisoning with the most common toxic species of mushroom found in our country. Furthermore, growing interest in hallucinogenic mushrooms among young people has become a serious medical problem of our time. Websites make it incredibly easy for people to obtain information on the morphology and appearance of mushrooms with psychoactive properties, which leads inexperienced pickers

Outbreaks of mushroom poisoning associated with acute kidney injury.

INTRODUCTION: The outbreak of acute kidney injury (AKI) due to mushroom poisoning is not a frequently encountered medical challenge. Herein, we present 13 mushroom poisoning cases associated with AKI related to Amanita Proxima (A. Proxima) causing poisoning reported in a short time period in Turkey. METHODS: A total of 13 patients with AKI due to mushroom poisoning admitted to Usak Research and Training Hospital between November and December 2020 were included. Under morphological and microscopical investigations of mushroom specimens (from three patients), the species of the mushrooms were i…

Cyclopeptide mushroom poisoning: A retrospective series of 204 patients.

Cyclopeptide mushroom poisoning is responsible for 90%-95% of deaths from macrofungi ingestion. The main objectives of this study are to describe cases of cyclopeptide mushroom poisoning and to determine risk factors that may influence the severity/mortality of poisoned patients. We included all cases of amatoxin toxicity reported to two French Poison Centers from 2013 through 2019. We compared the severity with the Poison Severity Score (PSS) and the outcomes of patients using simple logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression. We included 204 cases of amatoxin toxicity. More than…

Mushroom poisoning from species of genus Inocybe (fiber head mushroom): a case series with exact species identification.

BACKGROUND: Many species of the genus Inocybe (family Cortinariaceae, higher Basidiomycetes) are muscarine-containing mycorrhizal mushrooms, ubiquitous around the world. The few published reports on the poisonous Inocybe mushrooms are often limited by the inadequate identification of the species. The clinical course of patients with typical muscarinic manifestations, in whom Inocybe spp. was unequivocally identified, is reported. CASE SERIES: Between November 2006 and January 2008 14 consecutive patients with typical muscarinic syndrome after mushroom ingestion were recorded. The clinical man

Renal involvement in mushroom poisoning: The case of Orellanus syndrome.

Although mushroom poisoning is a rare cause of acute renal injury, in some cases it may lead to the development of a severe and irreversible renal failure. Orellanus syndrome is the most important example of organic renal damage related to mushroom consumption. It is caused by the ingestion of orellanine, the main toxin of different types of Cortinarius mushrooms (Cortinarius speciosissimus, C. orellanus, C. orellanoides, etc.), and it is characterized by progressive clinical phases with a predominant kidney involvement, finally requiring renal replacement therapy in about 10% of cases. Renal …

A shared danger: Amanita mushroom poisoning in a married couple.

We present the case of a married couple intoxicated by mushrooms of the Amanita genus, developing acute toxic hepatitis. The man progressed to severe hepatitis with coagulopathy, requiring Intensive Care Unit admission and plasmapheresis, while the woman had a favorable evolution. Both received treatment with N-acetylcysteine and silymarin, resolving the condition without the need for a transplant. Early diagnosis of this condition and appropriate management are essential to prevent fatal outcomes.

[Mushroom poisoning in the IX region. Role of Amanita gemmata].

We report four episodes of mushroom poisoning that occurred between 1986 and 1990 in the province of Malleco. Twenty five of 36 individuals who ingested the mushroom became ill; they had an acute gastroenteritis that was followed in 7 by an acute hepatitis and in one by a massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Three subjects with fulminant hepatic failure and the subject with the massive bleeding died. Amanita gemmate (strain described as toxic in Chile since 1967) was found in two episodes and Amanita sp in one. The clinical picture is similar to that described for Amanita phaloides. The tr…

[Rhabdomyolysis as an unspecyfic symptom of mushroom poisoning--a case report].

Since 2001 a number of cases of mushroom poisoning with concomitant rhabdomyolysis have been described. Among the edible mushrooms growing in Europe, these reports concerned only Tricholoma equestre. The results of animal studies suggest that rhabdomyolysis could be a consequence of consumption of other edible fungi, and its occurrence depends on the amount of ingested mushrooms and individual sensitivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of rhabdomyolysis associated with the consumption of edible mushrooms from Leccinum and Boletus species. A 57-years old man was admitte…

Staphylococcal food poisoning caused by imported canned mushrooms.

From February through April 1989, four outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning in the United States were associated with eating mushrooms canned in the People's Republic of China (PRC). In the four outbreaks, 99 persons who ate at a suspect facility developed gastrointestinal symptoms within 24 h, including 18 who were hospitalized. Illness was associated with eating mushrooms at a university cafeteria (relative risk [RR] = 53.0), a hospital cafeteria (RR = 13.8), a pizzeria (odds ratio [OR] = infinity), and a restaurant (OR = infinity) (all P < .0001). Staphylococcal enterotoxin A was foun
