Mycoplasmas in pregnancy.

The genital mycoplasmas have been implicated in a number of adverse outcomes of pregnancy. Spontaneous preterm labour and preterm birth is an important contributor to perinatal mortality and morbidity. If Mycoplasma hominis plays an integral part in this problem, it is likely to contribute through its involvement with bacterial vaginosis. Ureaplasmas induce cytokines and inflammation, making a casual association compelling. The role of Mycoplasma genitalium and Mycoplasma fermentans is less clear, but M. genitalium is potentially pathogenic and should be treated if detected. There is considera…

Genital mycoplasmas.

The first described pathogenic organisms that caused urethritis were Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. The significance of detecting mycoplasma with genital swabs remained unclear for a long time. Culture can differentiate between Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis. After introduction of nuclear acid amplification, Mycoplasma genitalium was additionally detected, while gene analysis differentiates between Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum. Mycoplasma genitalium has become the third most frequent pathogen causing non-chlamydial, non-gonococcal urethritis (NC…

The genital mycoplasmas.

The smallest free-living, self-replicating organisms known, the mycoplasmas have been the subject of intense research. Of the 12 species that have been found in association with humans, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, M. hominis, and Ureaplasma urealyticum have been clearly shown to have pathogenic properties. The newly described M. genitalium may also have the ability to cause disease. The syndromes with which these organisms have been associated in the genital tract are reviewed, as well as methods of diagnosis and therapy.

[Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections].

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pathogenic micro-organism frequently held responsible for acute respiratory infection. The disease is ubiquitous and often proceeds in epidemics among small communities of young people (families, army barracks, universities). Its usual clinical manifestations consist of a stubborn cough symptomatic of tracheo-bronchitis with or without fever, and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Cases where chest X-rays show a pulmonary infiltrate are less frequent, but they differ from other lung diseases in that the respiratory signs at physical examination are discreet…

[Genital mycoplasmas].

The mycoplasmas frequently isolated in genital tract, and potentially pathogenic, are M. hominis, U. urealyticum and M. genitalium. M. hominis and U. urealyticum are very frequent in the vaginal tract and they can be, according to circumstances, either commensal or pathogenic. M. hominis and/or U. urealyticum, have been considered as responsible for many types of genital infectious diseases (such as cervicitis, pelvis inflammatory disease), for infertility, obstetrical pathologies (premature delivery, premature rupture of membranes, chorio-amniotitis) and neonatal infections. Yet, most of the …

[Mycoplasmas and AIDS].

AIDS is a complex illness due to HIV type 1 and 2 infection. It is characterized by an important immunodeficiency mainly caused by depletion of CD4+ T lymphocytes. The reasons for this depletion have not been sufficiently clarified yet. In 1986, Shy Ching Lo astonished the scientific community with reported evidence concerning the direct role played by mycoplasma in the etiopathology of AIDS. Since then, different theories have pointed to mycoplasma as cofactors, commensals or opportunistic agents. Although in vivo and in vitro experiments are controversial they suggest a possible mechanism th…

Mycoplasma pneumoniae ecephalitis.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes between 5 and 10 percent of acute childhood encephalitis in Europe and North America. Encephalitis due to this organism may be caused by direct infection of the brain, immune-mediated brain injury or thromboembolic phenomenon. The prognosis is guarded with 20 to 60 percent suffering neurologic sequelae. The diagnosis of M. pneumoniae encephalitis should be based on strong evidence of M. pneumoniae infection that includes detection of the organism in culture or using molecular detection techniques in addition to serology and exclusion of other potential etiologies. …

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a frequent cause of community-acquired respiratory infections in children and adults. Although the organism is felt to be the most frequent 'atypical' pathogen responsible for community-acquired pneumonia in adults, the prevalence of M. pneumoniae varies greatly from study to study, depending on the population and the diagnostic methods used. Recent studies have found the prevalence of M. pneumoniae in adults with pneumonia to range from 1.9 to over 30%. M. pneumoniae is also a frequent cause of outbreaks of respiratory disease in institutional settings. However, the d…

[Genital mycoplasma infections].

Clinical and experimental investigations on the significance of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum have revealed different and contradictory results. Both germs are frequently discovered in young, sexually active persons. Ureaplasma urealyticum might be the cause of some cases of non-gonococcal urethritis. M. hominis seems to be one causative agent of endometritis, salpingitis, parametritis and septicaemia after birth; we do not know yet, however, how often this may be the case. M. hominis may also infect the newborn, e.g., it may cause meningitis and encephalitis. The diagnosis of …

Mycoplasma hominis septicaemia.

Mycoplasma hominis septicaemia occurred in a patient with a malignant lymphoma of lymphoblastic type in leukaemic phase. M hominis was isolated several times from blood cultures with antibody titres against the micro-organism rising to a high level despite severe immunosuppression. M hominis was detected in the blood after subculture of the blood culture bottles despite their macroscopically normal appearance. The patient's pyrexia resolved without treatment with antibiotics effective against M hominis.

Rapid mycoplasma culture for the early diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Early diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Mp) plays a pivotal role in its management. We evaluated the role of rapid culture method in early diagnosis of Mp infection and discussed the potential impact factors. A total of 2,600 patients with acute respiratory infection were included, and their pharyngeal swab samples were prepared for Mp rapid culture based on selective Mp fluid culture medium. The clinical contributing factors related to Mp infection were also explored. The positive rate of Mp culture in females was 41.75%, which was higher than that for males (37.63%). Mp infections were inc…

Co-infections by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Mycoplasma flocculare in macroscopic lesions of lung consolidation of pigs at slaughter.

Infections with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhyo), Mycoplasma hyorhinis (Mhr) and Mycoplasma flocculare (Mfloc) are common in swine. However, the degree of co-infections and the correlations between these mycoplasma co-infection and the severity of macroscopic lung consolidation lesions (MLCL) have not yet been explored in Brazil. The objectives were to quantify Mhyo, Mhr, and Mfloc in MLCL of slaughter pigs in Brazil, and to assess correlations with the degree of MLCL in slaughter pigs. To this end, five groups of lungs were made based on severity of lung lesions, and 80 lungs were collected for…

Molecular exploration for Mycoplasma amphoriforme, Mycoplasma fermentans and Ureaplasma spp. in patient samples previously investigated for Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the presence and genotypic macrolide susceptibility of Mycoplasma amphoriforme, and the presence of Ureaplasma spp. and Mycoplasma fermentans among clinical samples from England previously investigated for Mycoplasma pneumoniae. METHODS: Quantitative and conventional PCR methods were used to retrospectively screen a collection of 160 clinical samples previously submitted to Public Health England (PHE) for the detection of M. pneumoniae between October 2016 and December 2017. Samples which were positive for M. amphoriforme DNA were further investigated for mutations as…

Genital mycoplasma infections.

Since 1937, 13 Mycoplasma species, two Acholeplasma species, and one Ureaplasma species have been isolated from humans. Six of these have the urogenital tract as the primary site of colonisation but others, which have the oropharynx and respiratory tract as the primary site, are found occasionally in the urogenital tract because of orogenital contact. Mycoplasma hominis was the first to be isolated and is most strongly associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), together with a variety of other bacteria. Its involvement in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other conditions may be as part of …

Genital mycoplasma infections.

Three different species of mycoplasmas--M. hominis, M. fermentans, and Ureaplasma urealyticum--have been found to infect human genitalia. In the man, mycoplasmas appear to play a role in the etiology of nonspecific urethritis and prostatis. Mycoplasmas repeatedly have been cultured from the tubes of patients with acute salpingitis and a significant antibody response to the organisms during recovery has been reported. Obstetric infections and puerperal sepsis occasionally seem to be caused by mycoplasmas. These organisms also appear to induce spontaneous abortion as well as cause infertility in…
