The Mozena Classification System and treatment algorithm for ingrown hallux nails.

Infected ingrown toenails raise the question of how much nail should be removed and what amount of nail fold reduction should occur. Often, the ungual labia folds are found to be hypertrophic, forcing the nail to push into the flesh and start a foreign body reaction. A simplified approach to this problem is proposed on the basis of the measurement of 100 normal nail folds and 25 infected nail folds. The results of this study show that the treatment goal should be to achieve an ungual labia fold of less than 3 mm, concluding that there is a correlation between the depth of the ungual labia fold

Malignant melanoma masqueraded as ingrown toe nail.

We report a case in a 62-year-old female who presented with a year history of dull aching pain of the left big toe, which was aggravated by pressure on the nail and relieved by analgesia. Tissue biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. There was a black colour swelling about 3x8 mm in size over the medial side of the dorsum of left big toe with a scar of previous operation. Histopathological examination showed on gross section of 2 blackish area one infiltrate the bone the other the tumour not infiltrate the proximal interphalangial joint with another satellite lesion 20mm from ma

[Ingrown nail: A new cause of chronic perionyxis].

BACKGROUND: Retronychia is the phenomenon of ingrown nail resulting in inflammation of the proximal subungual fold and is a newly described entity. Herein, we report a new case revealed through chronic proximal perionyxis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 52-year-old woman followed up for hypothyroidism, for which she was receiving treatment, consulted for pain in the lateral fold of the left big toe that had been ongoing for four months and for which glomic tumour was the suspected cause. Questioning revealed repeated microtrauma due to wearing of tight shoes and lack of growth of the toenail over th

[Taking a biopsy, treating ingrown nails. Minor nail surgery in general practice].

Prior to any surgical operation on fingernails or toenails a diagnosis, or at least a suspected diagnosis, must be established. Suitable material for histopathology can be obtained by various methods: lateral longitudinal biopsy, matrix biopsy, and nail bed or nail wall biopsy. Of the surgical options, nail extraction is rarely indicated, and if at all, should be only partial. In the presence of trauma, a careful examination should be made for fracture of the terminal phalanx; where necessary, the matrix and bed must be sutured. Advanced onychogryposis is treated by applying carbolic acid to t

Long-term results of nail brace application in diabetic patients with ingrown nails.

BACKGROUND: Ingrown toe nail is a common foot problem; however, there are limited data concerning the treatment options for diabetic patients. OBJECTIVE: Because of the special attention given to avoidance of infection and ulceration of the foot in diabetics, we applied a new, simple nail device as a treatment option without any systemic treatment or surgical intervention. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We applied braces to 21 diabetic patients with ingrown toe nails. All had severe pain, erythema, and edema without suppuration or granulation tissue formation. Braces were applied until all the sympt

Efficacy of a new nail brace for the treatment of ingrown toenails.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for complicated ingrown toenails. However, alternative treatments using nail braces have been reported to show good efficacy. The objective of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of a new nail brace for the treatment of ingrown toenails. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on patients with ingrown toenails treated at Wan Fang Hospital between June 1, 2015 and May 30, 2016. Ingrown toenails were classified into acute inflamed/infected (AI) and chronic dystrophic (CD) types. Using physician global

Nail-fold excision for the treatment of ingrown toenail in children.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the nail-fold excision procedure in children. STUDY DESIGN: Prospectively collected data on patients less than 18 years of age who underwent a nail-fold excision for symptomatic ingrown toenail were analyzed. Patients were seen in 2 centers and data collected included demographics, site of ingrown toenail, complications (including recurrence), patient satisfaction, and duration of follow-up. RESULTS: Overall, 67 procedures were performed on 50 patients between June 2009 and July 2011 at the 2 institutions. The mean age was 14 years (range, 9-18 yea

Wedge excision of the nail fold in the treatment of ingrown toenail.

Many treatment modalities of ingrown toenail are reported in the literature, often associated with unacceptably high recurrence rate. The authors present their technique, which aims at reducing the convexity of the nail fold. After complete removal of the nail plate and accurate debridement of the granulomatous tissue, a wedge-shaped ellipsis of skin and subcutaneous tissue, lateral to the affected nail fold, is removed. Approximation of the margins of the resulting defect determines eversion of the nail fold. One hundred twenty ingrown toenails were treated with the wedge excision of the nail

Physics of nail conditions: why do ingrown nails always happen in the big toes?

Although surgical treatment of nail conditions can be traced back centuries to the writings of Paul Aegineta (625-690 AC), little is known about the physical laws governing nail growth. Such a poor understanding together with the increasing number of nail salons in the high street should raise legitimate concerns regarding the different procedures applied to nails. An understanding of the physics of nail growth is therefore essential to engage with human medicine and to understand the aetiology of nail conditions. In this context, a theory of nail plate adhesion, including a physical descripti
