Barrett's esophageal adenocarcinoma diagnosed by narrow-band imaging magnifying endoscopy.

A 40-year-old man was referred to our hospital for detailed examination of a protuberant lesion in long-segment Barrett's esophagus (LSBE). Under white light endoscopy (WLE) the lesion appeared as a protuberant lesion with a rough surface and was diagnosed as 0-IIa-type tumor suspected to be a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. A regular villous pattern was shown in the background mucosa of the LSBE by narrow-band imaging (NBI) magnifying endoscopy (NBI-ME). However, a slightly irregular villous pattern was observed on the lateral side of the main lesion. Therefore, a 0-IIa-type tumor was est

Endoscopic findings under narrow band imaging colonoscopy in ulcerative colitis.

Narrow band imaging (NBI) depicts distinct intramucosal vascular network and pit pattern without any use of dye technique. It is thus suggested that NBI can be used for the assessment of severity in inflammatory bowel diseases, especially in ulcerative colitis (UC). In the active UC, NBI colonoscopy depicts friability as a black area. In the inflamed granular mucosa, crypt openings and villous structure become evident through the procedure. In the inactive UC, there are two types of mucosal vascular pattern; one being composed of deep, green vessels and superficial, black vessels, and the othe…

Otoendoscopy in the era of narrow-band imaging: a pictorial review.

PURPOSE: Otoendoscopy represents the initial non-invasive diagnostic cornerstone for external and middle ear disorders. Recently, new techniques of enhanced imaging such as narrow-band imaging (NBI) have been introduced but their role as a potential aid in otological practice remains unproven. In this pictorial review, we want to present the potential application of this endoscopic method, highlight its limitations, and give some hints regarding its future implementation. METHODS: Representative cases of external and/or middle ear pathologies were selected to illustrate the role of NBI in thi

Role of narrow band imaging in the diagnostics of sinonasal pathology.

Malignancies of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are well known, but have uncommon presentations. Late diagnosis and local extension are significant prognostic factors associated with a poorer treatment outcome. Thus, refinements of the diagnostic procedures to enhance the sensitivity of the clinical evaluation are desirable. We here describe a case of endonasal lymphoma, in which the lesion was hardly visible and initially ignored at ordinary white light (WLI) nasoendoscopy, but easily recognisable, clearly pathogenic and well demarcated when illuminated with narrow band imaging (NBI) a…

Evaluation of narrow band imaging in the assessment of laryngeal granuloma.

Laryngeal granulomas belong to common complications following trans-oral laser microsurgery (TLM). The aim of this study was to evaluate NBI in the differentiation between granuloma-like lesions and local tumor recurrence. 154 consecutive patients after TLM due to early laryngeal cancer were enrolled. In the group, a monthly follow-up including NBI endoscopy was performed. Moderate and severe dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and invasive cancer were defined as positive histology, laryngeal granuloma and other benign laryngeal lesions as negative histology and premalignant lesions as suspicious his

The usefulness of the NBI - narrow band imaging for the larynx assessment.

Narrow band imaging (NBI) by enhancing the contrast between the mucosal epithelium and submucosal vessels facilitates diagnosis of precancerous and cancerous lesions, as well as hypertrophic lesions such as laryngeal papillomatosis. Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical technique based on the modification of white light by the use of special optical filters. Every change in the microvascular architecture of the mucosa is classified according to Ni's classification (2011). The use of NBI improves sensitivity and specificity of assessment of laryngeal lesions and allows more precise asses…

The usefulness of narrow band imaging in the assessment of laryngeal papillomatosis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a benign disease caused by human papillomavirus 6 and 11. The characteristic feature of this disease are wart-like lesions covering the respiratory epithelium with a predilection for the larynx. There is no curative treatment for the disease. The goal of the treatment is a total surgical removal of the papillomatous lesions in order to reduce the number of relapses. Therefore, a good visualization method of papillomas is crucial during surgery. The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of narrow band imaging (NBI) to t…

Narrow band imaging for Adamkiewicz artery preservation in thoracic Schwannoma resection.

PURPOSE: Complete resection of spinal cord tumors in the thoracic region requires precise preservation of critical vascular structures such as the Adamkiewicz artery. This report highlights the utility of narrow band imaging (NBI) in achieving complete schwannoma removal, while preserving vascular integrity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old male presented with left lower extremity weakness persisting for four months. He experienced difficulty cycling uphill and was forced to walk in a forward-bent posture. MRI revealed a dumbbell-shaped mass extending from the intradural space at Th12/L1 into…

Mucosal color changes on narrow-band imaging in esophageal eosinophilic infiltration.

This study aimed to examine the range of beige colored mucosa (BCM) in patients with esophageal eosinophilic infiltration (EEI) using narrow-band imaging (NBI). In this retrospective study, EEI was confirmed histologically in 12 consecutive patients from January 2014 to December 2017. The BCM tone on NBI without magnifying endoscopy was evaluated, and red, green, and blue (RGB) values of BCM and normal mucosa were measured. BCM was macroscopically classified into 2 groups (bright and dark) using cluster analysis. Histopathological analysis was performed in 1 patient who underwent biopsy for bo

Narrow-band Imaging Examination of Microvascular Architecture of Subcapsular Hepatic Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative ultrasonography is the golden standard method for evaluation of liver tumors during hepatectomy. However, in laparoscopic surgery, accurate assessment of tumors may be difficult, particularly if the lesion is located nearby the liver surface because of the challenges in handling the intraoperative ultrasound and the lack of tactile sensation. In this study, we demonstrate the preliminary results of examining the microvascular architecture of subcapsular hepatic tumors using laparoscopic narrow-band imaging (NBI) to distinguish between malignant and benign tumors. Narrow band imaging might contribute to the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux.

PURPOSE: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) accounts for 4-10% of outpatient visits. The standard domestic LPR diagnostic tools are the reflux finding score (RFS) and reflux symptom index (RSI). Narrow band imaging (NBI) can identify previously unknown characteristic microvessel features. Our aim was to explore the role of NBI in LPR diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 56 LPR outpatients and 41 symptom-negative controls. All individuals received RSI and RFS scores and underwent 24-hour multichannel intraluminal impedance-PH (MII-pH) monitoring and endoscopic NBI before and after treatm…

Narrow-band imaging system with magnifying endoscopy for early oral cancer.

It is often difficult to detect early oral cancer due to the specificity of the oral mucosa structure. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of narrow band imaging (NBI) as an effective and non-invasive diagnostic tool in early oral cancer and other oral diseases. A magnifying endoscopy system manufactured by Olympus Corporation was used. A total of 121 subjects were included in the study. Subepithelial capillary loops were identified and categorized according to the classification of Inoue, with healthy mucosa graded as Type I or II, and that showing evidence of cancer-induce…

Pharyngo-laryngeal examination with the narrow band imaging technology: early experience.

The prognosis of cancer patients is highly dependent on the time of diagnosis. Early, stage 1 disease is often curable whereas late stage diseases are usually beyond curable treatments. Therefore, new diagnostic tools for malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract are developed all the time and narrow band imaging (NBI) is one of these new options for early diagnostics. In this paper, we describe the implementation of NBI technique in our institution. During the first 6 weeks we used NBI to examine 73 patients with different types of pharyngeal or laryngeal problems. Most of the patients (7…

Utility of narrow band imaging in predicting histology in celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Narrow band imaging (NBI) with magnification better visualizes the duodenal microsurface and mucosal vascularity. NBI delineates villous atrophy better than conventional white light endoscopy. AIMS: This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of narrow band imaging with magnification (NBI-ME) in celiac disease (CD). METHODS: In this prospective study, consecutive patients of suspected CD and controls were subjected to tissue transglutaminase antibody test and endoscopic evaluation initially with white light followed by NBI-ME, and biopsies were taken from duodenu…

Application of Narrow-Band Imaging thoracoscopy in diagnosis of pleural diseases.

BACKGROUND: Patients with undiagnostic pleural effusions are routinely examined by conventional medical thoracoscopy under the white light (WL). The endoscopic appearance of pleural diseases under WL could be misleading. Narrow-Band Imaging (NBI) has been applied as an interesting and effective diagnostic tool for endoscopy. However, there is also controversy about its value in the application of thoracoscopy. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of NBI technology during thoracoscopy. METHODS: Patients with undiagnosed pleural effusions admitted to o
