Neurilemmomas are slow growing, benign neoplasms of neural crest Schwann cell origin. They arise from any peripheral, spinal or cranial nerve except the olfactory and optic. Presentation is usually asymptomatic but focal neurological signs and symptoms may be associated with nerve compression. With approximately one third of all documented cases presenting in the head and neck region, we report a case of a submandibular neurilemmoma misdiagnosed pre-operatively. The diagnostic difficulties are discussed and the current literature reviewed. This case highlights the importance of inclusion of ne

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic and peripancreatic schwannomas are exceptionally rare benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Cystic and hemorrhagic degeneration may produce imaging findings resembling pancreatic cystic neoplasms, while an extrapancreatic neural origin can be difficult to recognize preoperatively. Lesions located in the pancreatic head nerve plexus region pose additional surgical challenges because of their close relationship with periarterial nerve plexuses and major vessels.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman was referred for a 5-cm multilocular cystic lesion adjacent to the pa

The authors describe a malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) that originated in the median nerve in an elderly adult. After the diagnosis was made by biopsy, the patient underwent radical local resection with interpositional vein grafting of the brachial artery. The tumor had the typical appearance of a primitive neural tumor with small, round cells forming rosettes. It stained positively for both the Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral PNET antigen (HBA-71) and neuron-specific enolase, confirming its neural origin. Ultrastructural examination revealed dense core granules and sugg

Salivary neoplasms are relatively infrequent entities that account for only 4% of tumors of the head and neck. Although slow-growing lesions of the preauricular area and submandibular space are often confused with sebaceous cysts, lymph nodes, or lipomas by the non-otolaryngologist, otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons recognize that all preauricular and submandibular masses should be considered a salivary neoplasm until proven otherwise. Surgery remains the treatment of choice for benign salivary gland neoplasms; however, techniques continue to evolve in order to preserve salivary functio

A 48-year-old man presented with 3 days of mild horizontal diplopia in the left direction, followed by the onset of headache 17 days later. A physical examination revealed isolated left abducens nerve palsy. Head computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans revealed soft-tissue density neoplasms that occupied the sphenoidal sinus and further invaded to destroy the clivus. Immunohistochemical staining of neoplasms was performed from biopsies samples. The pathological diagnosis was extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (ENKL), nasal type, associated with Epstein-B

Neoplasms that commonly affect patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) include schwannomas, meningiomas, astrocytomas, ependymomas, and neurofibromas. Perineuriomas are rare tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath that share some characteristics with meningioma. As in both NF2-associated and sporadic cases of schwannoma and meningioma, perineuriomas often harbor mutations or deletions of the NF2 gene. However, perineuriomas have not previously been reported in the clinical setting of NF2. A 30-year-old man with a history of bilateral vestibular schwannomas, a parasagittal meningioma, an int

It is generally assumed that tumours are not innervated. However, following an accidental observation of a nerve fibre within an adenoma of the ciliary body epithelium of the eye, we have further examined two such tumours. One pigmented and one non-pigmented adenoma of the ciliary body epithelium (APCE and ANCE, respectively) that had been surgically removed from two human eyes were processed for ultrastructural evaluation and systematically screened and analysed for the occurrence of nerve tissue under a transmission electron microscope. The adenomas were composed of epithelial tumour cell st

A 60-year-old male presented with a nontender irreducible mass in the right groin. Examination revealed swelling in the inguinal canal in the region of the deep inguinal ring. He underwent laparoscopic, extraperitoneal exploration of the spermatic cord, where a soft tissue tumor was identified and excised. Histological examination confirmed a nerve sheath tumor. Nerve sheath tumors are uncommon neoplasms of peripheral nerves, which theoretically can arise from any nerve fiber but have only been described in the spermatic cord in three reports in the literature. We are not aware of any reports

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland pathologies requiring resection present with varying effects on surrounding tissue architecture, and we hypothesize that this spectrum of indications confers different risks of adverse events. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the complication profiles of parotidectomy in children across a spectrum of pathologies requiring parotid resection.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric data set was queried for parotidectomies performed from 2012 through 2017. Indications were subclassified based on Internat

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are a heterogeneous subgroup of soft tissue tumors that either arise from a peripheral nerve or show nerve sheath differentiation. On imaging, direct continuity with a neural structure or location along a typical nerve distribution represents the most important signs to suggest the diagnosis. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are the best modalities to evaluate these lesions. First, it is necessary to differentiate between a true tumor and a non-neoplastic nerve condition such as a neuroma, peripheral nerve ganglion, intraneural venous malformation, lipom

The clinicopathological features of 49 neoplasms in the retroperitoneum, but not arising directly from a major retroperitoneal organ, are described. Abdominal pain and a mass, urinary tract symptoms and evidence of pressure on venous channels or nerves were common modes of presentation. In 6 cases the neoplasms were found incidentally and in 4 patients removal of the retroperitoneal mass was an elective procedure during the treatment of metastatic testicular germ cell tumour. Histopathological diagnosis revealed 4 major tumour types: germ cell neoplasms, non-germ cell metastatic carcinoma, sof

While the wide spectrum of soft tissue neoplasms found throughout the body may occur at the knee, this review focuses on the more commonly encountered intraarticular or juxtaarticular solid soft tissue lesions that may be encountered in this location. The benign intraarticular synovial-based tumors or tumor-like processes of tenosynovial giant cell tumor, synovial chondromatosis, and lipoma arborescens are reviewed, as are the solid juxtaarticular neoplasms of nerve sheath tumors, synovial sarcoma, and myxoid liposarcoma. Several uncommon lesions that occur at the knee while relatively rare el

Paragangliomas are neoplasms originating from paraganglion tissue derived from mesoderm, the most common location being adjacent to carotid bifurcation. Rarely these tumours can be bilateral. We present here a case of bilateral paraganglioma occurring in a young woman. On one side the tumour was arising from the vagus nerve and on the other, from the carotid body. Clinical, radiological and histopathological features and treatment dilemmas are discussed.

Pediatric neoplastic extraocular soft-tissue lesions in the orbit are uncommon. Early multimodality imaging work-up and recognition of the key imaging features of these lesions allow narrowing of the differential diagnoses in order to direct timely management. In this paper, the authors present a multimodality approach to the imaging work-up of these lesions and highlight the use of ocular ultrasound as a first imaging modality where appropriate. We will discuss vascular neoplasms (congenital hemangioma, infantile hemangioma), optic nerve lesions (meningioma, optic nerve glioma), and other neo

The authors describe a patient with recurrent perineurioma arising in the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal forearm and extending along the forearm fascia. Soft tissue perineurioma is a rare, originally benign peripheral nerve sheath neoplasm arising from the perineurium, a protective cell barrier surrounding the individual fascicles in peripheral nerves. Perineurioma has only recently been recognized as an entity distinct from other nerve sheath tumors, such as schwannoma and neurofibroma, with unique morphologic, ultrastructural, and immunoreactive features. The recurrent tumor had converted

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and pathological characteristics of a neoformation suggestive of myxosarcoma in a cat's eyelid.
ANIMAL STUDIED: An 11-year-old mixed-breed castrated female cat presented with a nodule on the lower eyelid approximately 1.6 cm in diameter, multilobulated, non-ulcerated, soft, and adhered to both the skin and conjunctiva of the lower eyelid.
PROCEDURES: The incisional biopsy revealed findings suggestive of a peripheral nerve sheath tumor. After performing an exenteration of the right eyeball to ensure a safe surgical margin, the tissue samples were sent for h

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors encompass a wide spectrum of lesions with different biological behavior, including both benign and malignant neoplasms as well as the recent diagnostic category, i.e., "atypical neurofibromatous neoplasm with uncertain biologic potential" to be used only for NF1 patients. Neurofibromas and schwannomas are benign Schwann-cell-derived peripheral nerve sheath tumors arising as isolated lesions or within the context of classical neurofibromatosis or schwannomatoses. Multiple tumors are a hallmark of neurofibromatosis type 1(NF1) and related forms, NF2-related-schwann

Knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the retroperitoneum is crucial for surgery of the retroperitoneal organs. Surgery is essential for treatment of retroperitoneal pathologies. The list of these diseases is extensive and comprises acute and chronic inflammatory processes (abscess, injury, hematoma, idiopathic fibrosis), metastatic neoplasms, and primary neoplasms from fibroadipose tissue, connective tissue, smooth and striated muscle, vascular tissue, somatic and sympathetic nervous tissue, extraadrenal chromaffin tissue, and lymphatic tissue. The retroperitoneum can be approached and explore
