The Coexistence of Olfactory Groove with Optic Nerve Sheath Meningioma Presenting with Anosmia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are the third most common intracranial tumors in adults after glial tumors and metastases. Olfactory groove meningiomas often grow without symptoms due to their slow growth rates and location in the frontal lobe. Optic nerve sheath meningiomas are benign neoplasms of the meninges surrounding the optic nerve. The coexistence of olfactory groove and optic nerve sheath meningiomas without any history of neurofibromatosis or radiotherapy has never been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old female patient was reported with anosmia, headache, memory distur

Mesenchymal tumours with melanocytic expression: a potential pitfall in the differential diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Mesenchymal tumours with melanocytic expression can pose a diagnostic challenge because they frequently demonstrate both morphological and immunohistochemical overlap with other cutaneous melanocytic neoplasms. Therefore, they present potential pathological pitfalls that may lead to a misdiagnosis of malignant melanoma. Mesenchymal neoplasms that closely mimic melanoma include malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumour (melanotic schwannoma), epithelioid schwannoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath, cutaneous syncytial myoepithelioma, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue, and perivascular epithelio

Ultrasound and MR imaging of peripheral nerve tumors: the state of the art.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are a heterogeneous subgroup of soft tissue tumors that either arise from a peripheral nerve or show nerve sheath differentiation. On imaging, direct continuity with a neural structure or location along a typical nerve distribution represents the most important signs to suggest the diagnosis. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are the best modalities to evaluate these lesions. First, it is necessary to differentiate between a true tumor and a non-neoplastic nerve condition such as a neuroma, peripheral nerve ganglion, intraneural venous malformation, lipom

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with glandular differentiation in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1.

: The authors report an unusual case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with malignant differentiation arising as a subcutaneous nodule in the thigh of a 53-year-old woman with a history significant for neurofibromatosis type 1. Peripheral nerve sheath tumors containing a glandular component, commonly referred to as glandular peripheral nerve sheath tumors, are rare neoplasms found largely in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. These tumors are frequently malignant; recognition of metastatic potential is made based on the atypical spindle-cell component. Rarely, as in our case, the

Mediastinal tumors of peripheral nervous system origin.

A wide spectrum of benign and malignant tumors of peripheral nervous system origin can arise in the mediastinum. These neoplasms are more frequent in the posterior mediastinum and can develop from peripheral nerves, sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia, and neural tube embryonic remnants. The clinicopathologic features of mediastinal schwannomas, melanotic schwannomas, neurofibromas, ganglioneuromas, granular cell tumors, malignant tumors of peripheral nerve sheath origin, malignant melanocytic tumors of peripheral nerve sheath origin, neuroblastomas, ganglioneuroblastomas, and pigmented ne

Stabilization of Visual Function After Optic Nerve Sheath Fenestration for Optic Nerve Meningocele.

A 10-year-old boy with bilateral colobomatous cavitary disc anomalies presented with a 3-month history of vision loss in his right eye. MRI of the head and orbit revealed bilateral tubular cystic enlargement of the optic nerve/optic sheath complex with thickening of the optic nerves without inflammation or neoplasm, suggestive of bilateral optic nerve meningocele. An optic nerve sheath fenestration was performed OD, and he experienced an improvement and stabilization of vision in his right eye during a 1-year follow-up period. The authors recommend that surgical decompression, particularly opt

Sox10 is expressed in primary melanocytic neoplasms of various histologies but not in fibrohistiocytic proliferations and histiocytoses.

BACKGROUND: Sox10 is a transcription factor associated with neural crest development. Its expression has been reported in melanocytes and peripheral nerve sheath cells and their associated tumors. OBJECTIVE: To assess Sox10 sensitivity in benign and malignant melanocytic neoplasms of various histologic subtypes and to discern the specificity of Sox10 in distinguishing between melanocytic neoplasms and fibrohistiocytic and histiocytic mimickers. METHODS: Sox10 expression was examined by immunohistochemistry in 145 cases of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, including benign and malignan

Case report: Bilateral optic nerve sheath meningocele: clinical aspects.

Optic nerve sheath meningocele is an enlargement of the sheath itself, consisting of a collection of cerebrospinal fluid along the perineural space. It should be considered primary if it is not associated with orbital-cerebral neoplasm or with cranio-orbital junction malformations. We report three cases of bilateral primary idiopathic optic nerve sheath meningocele, two of them with gradual vision loss. The first case presented a history of monocular blurred vision of the right eye and headache. It was initially treated with acetazolamide without any improvement, after which optic nerve sheath

Spinal malignant nerve-sheath tumor or cellular schwannoma? A striking difference in prognosis.

Cellular schwannoma, a recently delineated entity, has a histological appearance mimicking that of malignant neoplasms. The aim of this study was to determine the outcome for patients treated for a spinal cellular schwannoma or malignant nerve-sheath tumor. A histological re-examination was conducted of 283 spinal tumors, considered to originate from a nerve root, that were treated in the Department of Neurosurgery between 1953 and 1985. After re-examination, 50 of these were determined to be other tumors or non-neoplastic lesions. The review yielded eight cellular schwannomas and six malignan

Laparoscopic extraperitoneal excision of a nerve sheath tumor of the spermatic cord.

A 60-year-old male presented with a nontender irreducible mass in the right groin. Examination revealed swelling in the inguinal canal in the region of the deep inguinal ring. He underwent laparoscopic, extraperitoneal exploration of the spermatic cord, where a soft tissue tumor was identified and excised. Histological examination confirmed a nerve sheath tumor. Nerve sheath tumors are uncommon neoplasms of peripheral nerves, which theoretically can arise from any nerve fiber but have only been described in the spermatic cord in three reports in the literature. We are not aware of any reports

MR imaging of neoplasms of the lumbar spine.

MR imaging has evolved as the primary modality for imaging spinal neoplasms; however, neoplasms must be distinguished from unusual appearances of degenerative lesions. This article reviews MR imaging findings of a variety of neoplastic lesions of the lumbar spine. For example, extradural, metastatic tumors are the most common; nerve sheath tumors are the most common intradural extramedullary tumors; and ependymoma accounts for most of the tumors arising from the filum terminale.

Primary mediastinal tumors: part II. Tumors of the middle and posterior mediastinum.

Lymphoma, mediastinal cysts, and neurogenic neoplasms are the most common primary middle and posterior mediastinal tumors. Lymphoma may involve the anterior, middle and/or posterior mediastinum, frequently as lymphadenopathy or as a discrete mass. Foregut cysts are common congenital mediastinal cysts and frequently arise in the middle mediastinum. Pericardial cysts are rare. Schwannoma and neurofibroma are benign peripheral nerve neoplasms, represent the most common mediastinal neurogenic tumors, and rarely degenerate into malignant tumors of nerve sheath origin. Sympathetic ganglia tumors inc

Imaging characteristics of orbital peripheral nerve sheath tumors: Analysis of 34 cases.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), a rare group of neoplasms in the orbit, comprise only 4% of all orbital tumors. At present, there are very few studies detailing the features of these tumors identified using imaging technology. AIM: To compare the differences in location, morphology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal intensity/computed tomography (CT) value, and enhancement degree of tumors of different pathological PNSTs types. METHODS: Clinical, pathological, CT, and MRI data were analyzed retrospectively in 34 patients with periorbital sheath tumors diagnosed usin

Case report: Solitary mass of the sciatic nerve confirmed as a primary extranodal manifestation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a geriatric patient.

BACKGROUND: Neoplastic lesions affecting peripheral nerves are rare in the general population and, most often, are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors. However, a minority of lesions represent high-grade malignancies associated with a poor prognosis, such as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Very rarely, these tumors represent peripheral non-nerve sheath tumors (PNNSTs), such as hematological neoplasms that impair nerve function. These can be hard to distinguish from MPNSTs and other lesions arising from the nerve itself. In the present case report, we describe a rare case o

[The "ancient schwannoma". A rare tumor of the mouth floor].

"Ancient schwannomas" of the mouth floor are rare, benign neoplasms derived from the nerve sheath of peripheral nerves. They show many degenerative changes such as necrosis and vascular thrombosis. Ancient schwannomas show histopathological features, such as degenerative changes and atypical nuclei, and may easily be confused with malignant neoplasms. B-scan sonography for the mouth floor and MRT imaging may be helpful in differential diagnosis. Here, we report on a patient with ancient schwannoma of the floor of the mouth.

Malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumor mimicking a benign nerve sheath lesion: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanotic nerve sheath tumors (MMNSTs) are rare neoplasms of Schwann cell origin that often arise along spinal nerves. They exhibit an estimated prevalence of 1% among primary peripheral nerve sheath tumors and carry an estimated mortality rate of 26%. This disease most commonly presents with localized pain and may also present with symptoms of cord compression. After radiographic imaging to identify suspected lesions, a definitive diagnosis is usually made through identification of PRKAR1A gene mutations. Typical management consists of tumor resection with adjuvant radio

A case of nerve sheath tumor followed by multicentric high-grade T-cell lymphoma in an African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris).

A 3-year-old intact male African pygmy hedgehog was presented at the Teaching Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade, with a growth on the left side of its abdomen. After clinical examination, the mass was surgically removed, and histopathological findings indicated a nerve sheath tumor. The hedgehog fully recovered after surgery and was euthanized eight months later due to the appearance of multicentric changes in the internal organs. Further necropsy and macroscopic, cytologic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings revealed that the tumor was a mul
