A 49-year-old Moroccan man was admitted to hospital with chest pain and dyspnoea. The next day he had paresis of the left arm and because of respiratory arrest he was transferred to the intensive care unit. A fast-progressive neurological illness developed with flaccid tetraparesis, areflexia and a lowered level of consciousness. He died 11 days after admission. The prevalence of transsexualism in the Netherlands was estimated by counting all the subjects who were diagnosed as transsexuals by psychiatrists or psychologists and were subsequently hormonally treated and generally underwent sex-reassignment surgery. At the end of 1990, 713 Dutch-born transsexuals received treatment (507 men, 206 women). On the basis of the records of subjects undergoing cross-gender hormonal treatment at the only gender treatment centre in the Netherlands, the prevalence of transsexualism was assessed over the years 1976-1986. In 348 patients with Down syndrome (DS) born in the Netherlands in 1981 and 1982 chromosome studies had been performed before December 1st 1984. Prenatal chromosome studies had revealed 22 cases who could have been born in 1981 and 1982 taking into account a pregnancy duration of 40 weeks. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adult coeliac disease in The Netherlands was studied in the Dutch Coeliac Disease Society and in blood donors but not in the general population. We therefore studied the prevalence of recognized and unrecognized coeliac disease in a large cohort, representative of the adult Dutch general population. This article describes developments in The Netherlands with a special focus on those issues that can be described as "typically Dutch": the divergent "opium-act," the methadone buses, the Junkie League, and the plans for heroin maintenance. It also gives an impression of the important role of the Dutch Government in the organization of the relief work system. The article concludes that in some ways the Dutch have learned to live with certain developments, and that they have ceased to look for a one and only solution.

From time to time the Netherlands are confronted with sylvatic rabies. The last time was in December 1986. The distribution of sylvatic rabies is restricted to certain areas: mainly the northeast and the south. Rabies is considered not to be endemic in the Netherlands. Oral vaccination is at the moment not under discussion. Since August 1986 examination on bat rabies has started. In 1987 81 out of 1150 bats were found to be positive. The epidemiology of this type of rabies is still unclear.
