Solitary neurofibroma of the oral mucosa: a previously undescribed variant of neurofibroma.

We report a distinct morphologic type of neurofibroma, lipomatous neurofibroma, arising in the oral mucosa, which has not been described previously in the literature. A 25-year-old female patient presented with a solitary mucosal mass on the palatal gingiva. Although the limited biopsy material was diagnosed as a spindle cell lipoma, characteristic light microscopic neurofibromatous areas, intricately admixed with mature fat, were found in the entire resection specimen. Immunohistochemically, many of the spindle cells were positive, either diffusely or focally, for common neural markers, with …

Endotracheobronchial neurofibromas.

Among benign tracheobronchial neoplasms, neurofibromas of neurogenic origin are exceedingly rare. In a search world literature, only 23 cases of endotracheobronchial neurofibromas in 21 series were found. We report another case of a 52-year-old man who presented to our hospital with the symptoms of intermittent productive cough and fever. Bronchoscopy revealed a round tumor obstructing the lumen of the right main bronchus. Right sleeve pneumonectomy was performed, and neurofibroma was confirmed by pathologic examination. The literature is reviewed.

Giant retroperitoneal solitary neurofibroma.

Solitary, benign retroperitoneal neurofibromas are exceedingly rare. Our case report highlights a man who presented with left-sided abdominal pain and left lower extremity numbness and weakness. On cross-sectional imaging, a 12.1 cm × 9.8 cm × 7.5 cm lobulated, well-marginated mass emanating from the left iliopsoas muscle at the level of the pelvic rim was visualised. A tissue biopsy suggested the diagnosis of a neurofibroma. The patient underwent resection of a femoral nerve sheath tumor, which resulted in femoral nerve palsy. Subsequent distal reconstructive surgeries and physical therapy re…

Pigmented neurofibroma with hypertrichosis.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented (or melanocytic) neurofibroma (PN) constitutes only 1% of cases and is considered a rare variant of neurofibroma containing melanin-producing cells. In addition, the association of PN with hypertrichosis is infrequent. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of an 8-year-old male with a neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) diagnosis, who presented a light brown hyperpigmented plaque, smooth and well-demarcated, and hypertrichosis on the left thigh. The skin biopsy showed characteristics of neurofibroma; however, in the deep portion of the lesion, melanin deposits positive for S100, …

Plexiform Neurofibroma of Clitoris.

Prolonged immobility is associated with significant short- and long-term morbidities in critically ill adults and children. The majority of critically ill children remain immobilized while in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) due to limited awareness of associated morbidities, lack of comfort and knowledge on how to mobilize critically ill children, and the lack of pediatric-specific practice guidelines. The objective of this article was to develop consensus practice recommendations for safe, early mobilization (EM) in critically ill children. A group of 10 multidisciplinary experts wit

Intrathoracic phrenic nerve neurofibroma.

The usual location of intrathoracic neurogenic tumors is the posterior mediastinum. Those in a mediastinal anterior or middle location arise from the intrathoracic phrenic nerve, which is extremely rare and causes a problem for etiologic diagnosis. We report what is, to our knowledge, the second case of a mediastinal neurofibroma originating from the phrenic nerve of a 59-year-old woman without von Recklinghausen disease. Diagnosis was suggested by the radiologic features and confirmed by histologic aspects after excision. The prognosis after complete resection is excellent.

Giant Pelvic Neurofibroma in Patient with Plexiform Sciatic Neurofibroma and Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disease with an autosomal dominant type of inheritance. It is a multisystem disease in which, besides skin manifestations, there is a possibility for the involvement of other organs and systems, and an atypical variant of neurofibromatosis type 1 can also be observed- the so-called plexiform neurofibroma. In patients with this inherited disease, mortality is higher due to the existing risk for malignant transformation and development of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs) or neurofibrosarcoma. CASE REPORT: We present a 25-year-old woma…

Palpebral Tarsal Solitary Neurofibroma.

Solitary neurofibroma is a rare, benign tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath, and is often associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. Herein, a case of palpebral tarsal solitary neurofibroma in a patient without neurofibromatosis is presented, with a review of the literature. A 68-year-old man presented with a subcutaneous mass in the right upper eyelid of 6 months’ duration. Eversion of the eyelid revealed a round, reddish mass on the lateral part of the tarsal plate which measured 12x8 mm in size. The lesion was excised with its tarsal base, diagnosed histologically, and did not recur during …

Bilateral Isolated Orbital Neurofibroma.

A rare case of bilateral orbital neurofibroma in a young healthy man is presented. The clinical, pathological and radiological features are described. The mass was excised using lateral orbitotomy approach in both the eyes. A definitive diagnosis was made on histopathological examination. The need for recognition and differentiation from the other causes of lacrimal gland swellings is discussed. A complete systemic evaluation in such cases is essential to rule out any associated disorders; however, such an association may not be universal.

Diffuse neurofibroma of scalp.

Diffuse neurofibroma is an uncommon but distinct variety of neurofibroma, usually affecting trunk, head and neck regions of adolescents and young adults. The clinical features, gross macroscopic and histopathological findings are enunciated and the criteria for instituting the preferred modality of treatment for such lesions has been reviewed, stressing upon the need to exclude the neurofibromatoses preoperatively.

Protein Kinase C-alpha Gene Fusions in Dendritic Cell Neurofibroma: Distinction From Conventional Neurofibroma.

Dendritic cell neurofibroma with pseudorosettes is an uncommon but distinctive variant of neurofibroma. The pseudorosette structures are formed by the circumferential arrangement of small, dark cells around an eosinophilic core at the center of which there is often a single larger and paler cell with slender dendrite-like projections. Dendritic cell neurofibroma often shows a multinodular architecture, which can cause confusion with plexiform neurofibroma. Since plexiform neurofibroma is essentially pathognomonic of Neurofibromatosis type I, such confusion could lead to unnecessary and costly …

[Isolated neurofibroma of the tongue].

A clinical case of successful treatment of isolated tongue neurofibroma presented patient K., 64 years old, referred to the clinic complaining of a feeling of «discomfort» on swallowing. With a comprehensive examination, a diagnosis of an isolated tongue neurofibroma was established. Surgical treatment was performed. The diagnosis was confirmed morphologically. The presented clinical case of isolated tongue neurofibroma in an elderly patient is casuistic in nature, of scientific and practical interest due to the rarity and unusualness of the disease.
