OBJECTIVES: To report a case of melioidosis in a domestic cat in New Caledonia, describing the diagnostic, microbiological and molecular findings. To evaluate the potential of a glanders serological test for assessing exposure to Burkholderia pseudomallei.
METHODS: A domestic cat presenting with respiratory symptoms underwent clinical and radiographic examination. Bacterial culture was performed on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and the strain was characterised using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and whole-genome sequencing. In silico multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and phylogenetic analyses

Herein we report an unprovoked shark attack on a scuba diver in New Caledonia. The species responsible for the attack was identified as a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), based on both the victim's testimony and forensic examination. The victim suffered significant loss of soft tissues from one thigh, which resulted in hemorrhagic shock. Even though the event occurred at a remote location, miles away from the nearest hospital, appropriate first aid, immediate deployment of an alert system, and prompt helicopter transfer by an emergency rescue team allowed the victim to be transferred to an int

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacterium endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. In New Caledonia, sporadic cases were first described in 2005; since then, more cases have been identified. To improve our understanding of melioidosis epidemiology in New Caledonia, we compared the local cases and B. pseudomallei isolates with those from endemic areas. Nineteen melioidosis cases have been diagnosed in New Caledonia since 1999, mostly severe and with frequent bacteraemia, leading to three (16%) fatalities. All but one occurred in the North Pro

Several cases of Bancroftian filariasis were recently reported on Ouvea Island which is part of the archipelago of New Caledonia located in the south Pacific Ocean. Following these reports systematic screening was carried out in a group of 382 adult consultees at two medical dispensaries. Tests to detect microfilariae in the blood and antibodies in serum were performed at the Pasteur Institute in New Caledonia and the Malarde Institute in Papeete, French Polynesia, respectively. Of the two subjects with manifestations consistent with filariasis, one was seropositive but neither presented micro

Leptospirosis is a frequent zoonosis in New Caledonia, mostly in the Bourail area, with an incidence of 9.5/1000 inhabitants. This town is an important cross-roads between the main town, Noumea, and the bush. An agricultural show takes place every year in this town, concentrating a great number of domestic animals and several thousand people coming from all over the island. A study was carried out on 78 patients with leptospirosis. The patients were mostly men (70%) of all ages of Melanesian and European origin. People who were living in the bush were more often attacked by leptospirosis than

Ascetosporea is a group of parasitic protists within Endomyxa that primarily infect marine invertebrates and can cause serious damage to fishery resources such as oysters and prawns. Although approximately 50 species have been formally described, environmental DNA (eDNA) studies suggest that their diversity remains largely underestimated, with many lineages yet to be discovered. Their ecological roles and host ranges are also poorly understood, partly because no complete life cycle has been elucidated, likely due to the difficulty of maintaining live cells in laboratory conditions. In this stu

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a major public health concern in New Caledonia (NC) and in other tropical countries. Severe manifestations of the disease are estimated to occur in 5-15% of all human infections worldwide and factors associated with these forms are poorly understood. Our objectives were to identify risk factors and predictors of severe forms of leptospirosis in adults.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of inpatients with laboratory-confirmed leptospirosis who were admitted to two public hospitals in NC in 2008-2011. Cases were patients with fata

Leptospirosis is an important cause of seasonal outbreaks in New Caledonia and the tropics. Using time series derived from high-quality laboratory-based surveillance from 2000-2012, we evaluated whether climatic factors, including El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and meteorological conditions allow for the prediction of leptospirosis outbreaks in New Caledonia. We found that La Niña periods are associated with high rainfall, and both of these factors were in turn, temporally associated with outbreaks of leptospirosis. The sea surface temperature in El Niño Box 4 allowed forecasting of lepto

Leptospira has been a major public health concern in New Caledonia for decades. However, few multidisciplinary studies addressing the zoonotic pattern of this disease were conducted so far. Here, pig, deer and dog samples were collected. Analyses were performed using molecular detection and genotyping. Serological analyses were also performed for dogs. Our results suggest that deer are a reservoir of L. borgpetersenii Hardjobovis and pigs a reservoir of L. interrogans Pomona. Interestingly, 4.4% of dogs were renal carriers of Leptospira. In dog populations, MAT results confirmed the circulatio

PURPOSE: The incidence of leptospirosis is very high in New Caledonia (average annual incidence rate: 180/100 000 of the population). To investigate the role of pathogenic leptospires as an aetiological agent of ocular diseases, we report the results of a 5-year survey in New Caledonia.
METHODS: We reviewed 13 patients (corresponding to 17 investigated pathologic eyes) retrospectively. The selection of patients was based on epidemiological data, initial clinical examination, biological confirmation of leptospirosis according to reference procedures and a specific polymerase chain reaction ass

The Pasteur Institute in New Caledonia performs for this territory the biological diagnosis of human leptospirosis; therefore its activity locally gives a rather exhaustive description of this pathology. The results presented here cover the 2001-2005 period and describe the principal epidemiological and biological features of human leptospirosis in New Caledonia. The investigated patients were recruited by the main medical structures: territorial and provincial hospitals, public dispensaries, clinics and general practitioners. The laboratory used the microagglutination test for serological inv

A study of human and animal leptospirosis was carried out in new Caledonia's two most important focuses. This survey showed an annual incidence in the human population of 8.8 p. thousand in the Nera basin and 0.88 p. thousand in the Coulée basin. Male adults with agricultural and livestock occupations are the most exposed, especially from March to May, the end of the hot season. Frequent contacts with fresh water and animals, and the failure to use of gloves and boots, significantly increase the risk of contamination. Two factors of severity are important: serotype and age. Leptospira icteroha

Injuries by marine animals present diverse types and forms. The responsible sea-animals resort to many zoological species, vertebrates and invertebrates, ranging from fishes to sponges. The vulnerant processes are also various: the wound being or not associated with envenomation. Venoms are different, according to the species: some ones are only histotoxic and have a local effect around the wound, others are viscerotoxic, giving a generalized and sometimes fatal intoxication. New Caledonia is an archipelago situated in particularly warm waters, and therefore is a privileged area to observe mar

A leptospirosis epidemic affected New Caledonia during the first semester of 2008. A total of 135 cases were diagnosed with a relatively low fatality rate of 3.7%. Heavy rainfalls, related to La Niña, favoured this epidemic. The PCR, routinely used, confirmed 54% of the cases, and the microagglutination test 56%. Epidemiological and economical data on this epidemic are presented and discussed.

We report an epidemic of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis which occurred in February 1994 among a group of 24 persons after they had once or twice visited a cave in New Caledonia. This study describes the physical and laboratory findings, which lead to the diagnosis of histoplasmosis. Each test was evaluated. All members of the group had a physical examination, early and late serological tests, pulmonary X-rays (including CT) and some had mycological examination of bronchoalveolar washes. Mycological investigations were made on samples collected from the cave. Histoplasmic skin testing was not p

With over one million cases worldwide annually and a high fatality in symptomatic forms, human leptospirosis is a growing public health concern for the most vulnerable populations, especially in the context of global warming and unplanned urbanization. Although the Asia-Pacific region is particularly affected, accurate epidemiological data are often lacking. We conducted an eleven-year retrospective laboratory-based epidemiological survey of human leptospirosis in New Caledonia. From 2006 to 2016, 904 cases were laboratory-confirmed, including 29 fatalities, corresponding to an average annual

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an important public health issue, particularly in the Pacific region, but its true burden is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in young adults from New Caledonia, based on echocardiography, and to evaluate the accuracy of dynamic criteria, focusing on mitral valve (MV) leaflet motion.
METHODS: Blind analysis of echocardiography by three cardiologists; diagnosis of RHD required at least one dynamic criterion (exaggerated or restricted MV leaflet motion); subjects with morphological criteria (MV leaflet
