Nitrile compounds are manufactured widely by man as well as in Nature. The industrial potential of using the microbial metabolism of nitriles and related compounds for the manufacture of a variety of chemicals has started to be realised. The microbial metabolism of nitrile-using microorganisms can also be harnessed to biodegrade toxic waste effluent streams that contain nitriles and are formed during the chemical synthesis of nitrile compounds.

A series of transition metal-based double metal cyanides (DMCs) were studied as catalysts for the synthesis of nitriles via acid-nitrile exchange reaction. The best nitrile yields were obtained with Co3[Co(CN6)]2 DMC, which proved to be a versatile, stable, reusable and highly active catalyst, exhibiting an activity comparable to that of homogeneous Lewis acid catalysts.

In the alkyl addition reaction of aromatic nitriles using Grignard reagents, ketones are formed after hydrolysis. However, this addition reaction is often slow compared to that using reactive organolithium(i) reagents. In this study, we improved the reaction by using zinc(ii)ates, which are generated in situ using Grignard reagents and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) as a catalyst. The first example of metal-free cyanomethylenation from alkyl nitriles of sp3 C-H bonds to afford quaternary carbon centers is described. This oxidative protocol is operationally simple and features good functional group compatibility. This method provides a novel approach to highly functionalized fluorene and oxindole derivatives, which are commonly used in material and pharmaceutical areas. Control experiments provide evidence of a radical reaction process.

We report the first success in the gold-catalyzed oxoarylations of nitriles with pyridine-derived N-oxides using gold carbenes as initiators. These oxoarylations were also achieved satisfactorily in intermolecular three-component oxidations, including diverse alkenyldiazo esters, nitriles, and pyridine-based oxides.

Cyanide is known as a toxic compound for almost all living organisms. We have searched for cyanide-resistant bacteria from the soil and stock culture collection of our laboratory, and have found the existence of a lot of microorganisms grown on culture media containing 10 mM potassium cyanide.
