The cytotoxicity and chemosensitizing potential of four dual function nitrofurans was determined in human HT-29 multi-cell spheroids and rodent KHT sarcoma solid tumors. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of two nitrofuran derivatives against biofilms formed by two strains of Histoplasma capsulatum and to study the toxicity of these compounds in alternative models: Caenorhabditis elegans, Galleria mellonella, and zebrafish.
METHODS: The metabolic activity of biofilms was measured after treatment using the XTT reduction assay. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy were used to observe damage to mature biofilms. Survival curves were generated for G. mellonella, while percentage survival was determined for C. elegans and zebrafish.

Helicobacter pylori is an emerging antibiotic-resistant and carcinogenic gastric pathogen. We developed nitrofuran derivatives with anti-H. pylori activity and found the analog CLI-19-009 (2-nitro-6,7-dihydrobenzofuran-4-one N-(cinnamoyl)hydrazone) inhibited H. pylori growth at 0.25 mg/L.
