Prevention of nitrous oxide-induced megaloblastic changes in bone marrow using folinic acid.

Prolonged anaesthesia with nitrous oxide inactivates vitamin B12 and impairs DNA synthesis in bone marrow cells. The use of parenteral folinic acid in the prevention of these toxic effects has been studied in 11 patients, ventilated artificially with nitrous oxide in oxygen for 24 h. Bone marrow aspirates were performed before and after exposure to nitrous oxide. They were assessed morphologically and with the deoxyuridine suppression test. Folinic acid 30 mg immediately before anaesthesia and 30 mg 12 h later, prevented the toxic effects of nitrous oxide in four out of five patients, whereas

Emissions of Nitrous Acid, Nitryl Chloride, and Dinitrogen Pentoxide Associated with Automotive Braking.

As worldwide trends move toward replacing combustion transportation modes with electric vehicles, characterizing non-tailpipe emissions, such as those from brake wear, becomes increasingly important. Nitrous acid (HONO), nitryl chloride (ClNO2), and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) are important sources of radical oxidants (e.g., •OH, •Cl, •NO3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the atmosphere, driving the chemistry that leads to air quality degradation. Discrepancies between measurements and model predictions indicate that there are significant unknown sources of these species, particularly HONO, where…

Advances in accounting methodology of nitrous oxide emissions from the adipic acid industry.

Nitrous oxide (N2O), as an important gas affecting climate warming, is attracting attention from all walks of life. This review addresses N2O emissions status in the adipic acid industry, a significant industrial greenhouse gas source. It elucidates the N2O emission mechanism and influencing factors in adipic acid production. It extensively evaluates N2O emission accounting methods, including Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, World Resources Institute (WRI) Protocol, and others. While the IPCC emission factor method offers simplicity and comparability, it may lack pr

The role of small acid-soluble proteins (SASPs) in protection of spores of Clostridium botulinum against nitrous acid.

Mutant strains of Clostridium botulinum ATCC 3502 were generated using the ClosTron in four genes (CBO1789, CBO1790, CBO3048, CBO3145) identified as encoding α/β-type SASP homologues. The spores of mutant strains in which CBO1789 or CBO1790 was inactivated demonstrated a significant increase in sensitivity to the damaging agent nitrous acid (P<0.01), a phenotype that was partially restored to wild-type in complementation studies. In contrast to nitrous acid, the spores of the CBO1789 and CBO1790 mutants showed no change in their resistance to formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide (P>0.05), two ot…

Measurements of nitrous acid in commercial aircraft exhaust at the Alternative Aviation Fuel Experiment.

The Alternative Aviation Fuel Experiment (AAFEX), conducted in January of 2009 in Palmdale, California, quantified aerosol and gaseous emissions from a DC-8 aircraft equipped with CFM56-2C1 engines using both traditional and synthetic fuels. This study examines the emissions of nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NO(x) = NO + NO(2)) measured 145 m behind the grounded aircraft. The fuel-based emission index (EI) for HONO increases approximately 6-fold from idle to takeoff conditions but plateaus between 65 and 100% of maximum rated engine thrust, while the EI for NO(x) increases continuous…

Concentration and sources of atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) at an urban site in Western China.

Highly time-resolved measurements of nitrous acid (HONO) were carried out with a highly sensitive long path absorption photometer (LOPAP) at an urban site of Xi'an in Western China from 24 July to 6 August 2015 to investigate the atmospheric variations, sources, and formation pathways of HONO. The concentrations of HONO vary from 0.02 to 4.3ppbv with an average of 1.12ppbv for the entire measurement period. The variation trends of HONO and NO2 are very similar and positively correlated which, together with the similar diurnal profiles of HONO/NO2 ratio and HONO, suggest the importance of heter…

A nitrous acid procedure as a selective histochemical means of eliminating the N-sulphates of glycoconjugates.

A nitrous acid procedure has been shown to lead to the elimination of N-sulphates in sections of a series of tissues containing sulphated glycoconjugates. Two groups of sulphated glycoconjugate-containing tissues were used; one contained N-sulphates and other was devoid of such groupings. In the first group of tissues, mast cells of different origins and renal glomeruli in the rat were employed. Xiphoid and tracheal cartilage matrix, submandibular and sublingual gland acini and gastric, duodenal and colonic mucosae were used in the second group. Sections were treated with nitrous acid and then…

Free nitrous acid-ultrasound pretreatment enhances cellulose conversion by complementary physical and chemical deconstruction.

Biorefining of cellulosic biomass has emerged as a promising strategy to address the global energy crisis and advance second-generation biofuel production. To overcome the inherent structural recalcitrance of cellulose, this study proposes a novel combined pretreatment strategy using free nitrous acid (FNA) and ultrasound (US) and systematically elucidates its underlying mechanisms. While US and FNA pretreatment individually improved substrate digestibility, their combination (FNA + US) produced the greatest enhancement, with the final total organic carbon concentration and cellulose conversio…

Prophage Activation as an Overlooked Mechanism Underlying the Biocidal Effect of Free Nitrous Acid in Sewers.

Biogenic hydrogen sulfide produced in sewer systems causes odor nuisance and concrete corrosion, necessitating effective biocidal control. Free nitrous acid (FNA) has emerged as a promising biocide, but its unclear mechanisms complicate dosage optimization and risk assessment. Here, using Desulfovibrio vulgaris as a model lysogenic bacterium, we demonstrate that low-dose FNA (0.2-4.0 mg N/L) induces bacterial inactivation via prophage activation-associated lysis in addition to chemical oxidation. Reactive nitrogen species (RNS) scavenging tests revealed that RNS-mediated oxidative stress was c…

The seasonal variations and potential sources of nitrous acid (HONO) in the rural North China Plain.

Nitrous acid (HONO), an essential precursor of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the troposphere, plays an integral role in atmospheric photochemistry. However, potential HONO sources remain unclear, particularly in rural areas, where long-term (including seasonal) measurements are scarce. HONO and related parameters were measured at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) during the winter of 2017 and summer and autumn of 2020. The mean HONO level was higher in winter (1.79 ± 1.44 ppbv) than in summer (0.67 ± 0.50 ppbv) and autumn (0.83 ± 0.62 ppbv). Source analysis revealed that the heterogeneou…

Nitrous acid interference with passive NO2 measurement methods and the impact on indoor NO2 data.

Recent research has demonstrated that nitrous acid (HONO) is produced in indoor environments by NO2 reacting with interior surfaces, and is also emitted directly by some combustion sources. We have recently characterized the interference by HONO to NO2 measurements made by several commonly used continuous NO2 monitors. This paper reports on the effect of HONO on NO2 measurements made by passive sampling devices. The objective of this study was to evaluate this interference, and the accuracy and precision of passive samplers used for indoor NO2 measurements. We report that HONO interferes quant…

Increasing the removal efficiency of antibiotic resistance through anaerobic digestion with free nitrous acid pretreatment.

Swine manure is a significant reservoir for antibiotic resistance. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a common biological process used to treat swine manure but still faces low efficiencies in biogas production and antibiotic resistance removal. It is here shown that AD with free nitrous acid pretreatment (FNA) was effective in reducing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in swine manure. FNA pretreatment (nitrite =250 mg N/L, pH=5.0, temperature=20 ± 1 °C) simultaneously reduced antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Quinones and Sulfonamides), inactivated antibiotics resistance bacteria (ARB) by 0.5-3 logs, an…

Response of poly-phosphate accumulating organisms to free nitrous acid inhibition under anoxic and aerobic conditions.

The response of free nitrous acid (FNA)-adapted poly-phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) to FNA inhibition under aerobic and anoxic conditions was studied. Anoxic P-uptake was 1-6 times more sensitive to the inhibition compared to aerobic P-uptake. The aerobic nitrite reduction rate increased with FNA concentration, accompanied by an equivalent decrease in the oxygen uptake rate, suggesting under high FNA concentration conditions, electrons were channeled to nitrite reduction from oxygen reduction. In contrast, the nitrite reduction rate decreased with increased FNA concentration under ano…

Insights into the alleviating effects of exogenous α-ketoglutaric acid on free nitrous acid stress in Tribonema minus and ammonium removal in wastewater.

α-Ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) is a key intermediate metabolite in carbon and nitrogen metabolism, playing important roles in regulating microbial stress tolerance. However, its potential to mitigate free nitrous acid (FNA) toxicity, a primary inhibitor of microalgae-nitrifier consortium, has remained unexplored. This study investigated the effects of exogenous α-KG onTribonema minusunder FNA stress and evaluated its application in wastewater treatment. Results showed that 1.0 mmol/L α-KG markedly alleviated FNA stress, but a higher concentration (2.0 mmol/L) was less effective. α-KG mitigated FNA…

Combining high pressure homogenization with free nitrous acid pretreatment to improve anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge.

Single pretreatment of sewage sludge, either physical, chemical or biological, has its own drawbacks in term of poor sanitization, energy intensity and high operational and capital cost. To tackle these drawbacks, combined high pressure homogenization (HPH) and free nitrous acid (FNA) pretreatment for sludge solubilization and further biodegradation in anaerobic digestion was investigated. Synergistic effect of combined HPH (40 MPa) and FNA (2.49 mg/L) pretreatment (HPH-FNA) for improving anaerobic digestion was evaluated, and its effect on archaeal and bacterial community structure was analyz…

Evaluation and impact factors of indoor and outdoor gas-phase nitrous acid under different environmental conditions.

As an important indoor pollutant, nitrous acid (HONO) can contribute to the concentration of indoor OH radicals by photolysis via sunlight penetrating into indoor environments, thus affecting the indoor oxidizing capability. In order to investigate the concentration of indoor HONO and its impact factors, three different indoor environments and two different locations in urban and suburban areas were selected to monitor indoor and outdoor pollutants simultaneously, including HONO, NO, NO2, nitrogen oxides (NOx), O3, and particle mass concentration. In general, the concentration of indoor HONO w…

Antimicrobial Effects of Free Nitrous Acid on Desulfovibrio vulgaris: Implications for Sulfide-Induced Corrosion of Concrete.

Hydrogen sulfide produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in sewers causes odor problems and asset deterioration due to the sulfide-induced concrete corrosion. Free nitrous acid (FNA) was recently demonstrated as a promising antimicrobial agent to alleviate hydrogen sulfide production in sewers. However, details of the antimicrobial mechanisms of FNA are largely unknown. Here, we report the multiple-targeted antimicrobial effects of FNA on the SRB Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough by determining the growth, physiological, and gene expression responses to FNA exposure. The activities of g…

Nitrous acid in the polluted coastal atmosphere of the South China Sea: Ship emissions, budgets, and impacts.

Nitrous acid (HONO) can significantly contribute to hydroxyl radicals (OH) and thus regulate atmospheric oxidation chemistry; however, ambient HONO sources are not well quantified and vary in different environments. In this study, we conducted comprehensive field observations at a coastal site in the South China Sea and performed chemical box modelling to demonstrate contrasting budgets and impacts of diurnal atmospheric HONO derived from the sea, coastline and continent. The ship emission ratio of HONO/nitrogen oxides (NOx) (1.21 ± 0.99%) was calculated from hundreds of night-time fresh plume…

A comparative proteomic analysis of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough in response to the antimicrobial agent free nitrous acid.

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) can contribute to facilitating serious concrete corrosion through the production of hydrogen sulfide in sewers. Recently, free nitrous acid (FNA) was discovered as a promising antimicrobial agent to inhibit SRB activities thereby limiting hydrogen sulfide production in sewers. However, knowledge of the bacterial response to increasing levels of the antimicrobial agent is unknown. Here we report the proteomic response of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough and reveal that the antimicrobial effect of FNA is multi-targeted and dependent on the FNA levels. This was…
