In a 1996 national survey, nephrology registered nurses believed that 15.0% of patients aged 65 years and older should not be dialyzed. In 2025, we replicated the survey and additionally asked nephrology nurses to rate their moral distress using the Moral Distress Thermometer (MDT). The 315 respondents believed that 19.4% of patients aged 65 years and older should not be dialyzed; 100 nurses (31.7% of respondents) reported high moral distress (MDT 6 or higher) and that 26.7% of older patients should not be dialyzed. In comparison, 215 nurses (68.3%) reported low moral distress (26.7% vs. 16.0%

METHODS: A Web-based WHOQOL-BREF was used to assess HRQoL and an intranet Workplace Violence Report System was used to record WPV incidents in order to design prospective longitudinal repeat measures over a period of 12 months, as well as using a subject-domain approach to detect any significant association between HRQoL and WPV.
RESULTS: A total of 129 physical violence events were reported, and the WHOQOL-BREF was completed a total of 8

We measured 24-hour circadian-rhythm patterns of activity and sleep/wake activity in a group of nursing-home patients (58 women and 19 men with a mean age of 85.7 years). Severely demented patients were contrasted with a composite group of moderate y, mild, or not-demented patients. Sleep/wake activity and light exposure were recorded with the Actillume recorder. Cosinor analyses were computed to determine the mesor, amplitude, acrophase, and circadian quotient of the activity rhythms. The diagnosis of dementia was based on the Mini Mental Examination and on examination of medical records. Sle

It can be affected when there is cultural interference between members, putting mutual understanding at risk in healthcare situations. This study analyses power relations in healthcare situations between older Norwegian patients and Spanish migrant nurses regarding active listening, shared decision-making, and patient participation. We performed a hermeneutical study endorsed in critical discourse studies framework from a transcultural perspective. A purposive sampli

BACKGROUND: The extent to which a positive delirium screening and new diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or related dementias (ADRD) increases the risk for re-hospitalization, long-term nursing home placement, and death remains unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To compare long-term outcomes among newly admitted skilled nursing facility (SNF) patients with delirium, incident ADRD, and both conditions.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort study of Medicare beneficiaries who entered a SNF from hospital with a minimum 14-day stay (n = 100,832) from 2015 to 2016.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify the factors that related to aggression (verbal abuse or physical abuse/assault) perpetrated against the nurse or other health professionals by patients/relatives or staff. In the light of the paucity of systematic reviews on this common issue in nursing, the objective was to present a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of these papers.
BACKGROUND: Aggression towards nurses is common around the world and can be the impetus for nurses leaving the profession or developing anxiety when working in particular settings

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has created significant and unprecedented psychological distress on nurses working with COVID-19 patients. Nurses dealing with such psychological distress are prone to burnout. This study examined the mediating role of sleep disturbance and rumination in the association between psychological distress and work-related burnout of nurses treating COVID-19 patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 26th February to 16th March 2021, on a sample of 250 nurses who were actively working during the COVID-19 pandemic in five referral hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Th

BACKGROUND: cognitively impaired hospital patients often experience agitation and aggression due to pain. Agitation complicates care, increasing the risk of adverse outcomes and patient-to-nurse violence. Managing agitation is challenging for nurses. Literature suggests they may rely on antipsychotics while missing other more appropriately targeted treatments. However, nurses' management of agitation remains unclear and under-researched.
OBJECTIVE: the aim of this study was to investigate hospital nurses' management of agitation in older cognitively impaired patients with pain.
DESIGN: this

BACKGROUND: A positive urine culture often drives initiation of antimicrobials even in the absence of symptoms. Our objectives were to evaluate the knowledge and practice patterns related to ordering urine cultures in patients with indwelling urinary catheters.
METHODS: We performed chart reviews of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) at our academic health care system between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2017, to assess practice patterns related to the assessment of potential CAUTIs. Following this, we surveyed physicians and nurses about indications for ordering urin

Elderly population is characterized by larger need for social welfare and medical treatment than other age groups. Along with aging, there is a number of emerging health, nursing, caring, psychological and social problems. Complexity of these problems results from overlapping and advancing involutional changes, multi-illness, decreased functional efficiency and other factors. The aim of the study was the assessment of health problems in geriatric patients as well as bio-psycho-social need deficiencies in a view of selected parameters of functional efficiency. The research group consisted of th
