An Opioid Education Program for Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Previous research identified training health caregivers in the rescue medication naloxone as a strategy to prevent death from opioid overdose. Existing research on naloxone training with nursing students is limited. This educational research project investigated whether training on opioids, opioid toxicity, and overdose response could impact student knowledge, skills, and confidence responding to overdoses. METHOD: Data were collected from baccalaureate nursing students using three sources:

The changing nature of the measurement of the economic impact of nursing care on health care organizations.

This paper adapts the perspective of organizational contingency theory to consider the changing nature of how the economic impact of nursing care upon health care organizations is measured. It is argued that useful measures of the economic impact of nursing care are a function of environmental, organizational, and technological circumstances. The increasing and diverse demands of health care consumers (environmental), the dramatic restructuring and re-engineering of the health care delivery system (organizational), and recent developments in the capabilities of and insights from information me

Using single-dose liposomal amphotericin B for cryptococcal meningitis induction therapy: nurse pearls and practical perspectives.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda where the burden of HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis is high, conventional amphotericin B deoxycholate has been standard to manage patients with cryptococcal meningitis in research settings. However, liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is now available via the efforts of UNITAID. We sought to describe our nursing experience using AmBisome within a clinical trial for cryptococcal meningitis. METHODS: We describe the experience of using single-dose 10mg/kg liposomal amphotericin B from the perspective of a research nurse in Uganda. Second, we described the process of

Effect of guideline implementation on costs of hand hygiene.

Hands of health care personnel frequently serve as vectors for the transmission of organisms between patients and are also a major reservoir for pathogens with antimicrobial resistance. Hand hygiene is one effective strategy to reduce health care associated infections. The purposes of this study were to (a) compare the costs of hand hygiene in hospitals with high and low hand hygiene compliance as well as high and low frequency of alcohol hand rub use; and (b) examine associations between hospital characteristics and hand hygiene compliance as well as frequency of alcohol hand rub use. Nursing informatics: the key to unlocking contemporary nursing practice.

Nursing informatics is a relatively new nursing specialty. Recognized by the American Nurses' Association in 1992, this field within nursing has grown exponentially. Once the purview of highly specialized individuals, nursing informatics has now crept into all dimensions of nursing, from domain of advanced nurse practitioners to prominence in critical care nursing. Nowhere is the management and processing of health-related information more important than in the care of the critically ill patient. Fast-paced environments, split-second decision making, wireless communications, monitoring systems

Legal, ethical and practical considerations in research involving nurses with dyslexia.

AIM: To discuss the legal, ethical and practical considerations in UK studies involving nurses with dyslexia and medication administration errors (MAEs). BACKGROUND: Nurses with dyslexia are a vulnerable population as they are susceptible to misrepresentation in research, especially that which involves a sensitive topic such as MAEs. DISCUSSION: Nurses with dyslexia may be particularly vulnerable to research that could exploit, implicate or attribute unsafe practice to them and their disability. Special consideration should be exercised when researching this population. CONCLUSION: Despite

Guideline and Implementation of Osteosarcoma Nursing Care for Children and Adolescents.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Clinical trials on pediatric oncology use therapeutic techniques with the overwhelming majority of children's cancer patients obtaining therapy via clinical investigation procedures. Medical treatment is scheduled according to a specific protocol for enrolled patients. These protocols often do not refer to nursing care. Nursing care, on the other hand, must complement the medical care specified in the medical research protocol. Safe treatment administration, assessment of treatment responses, patients' and families' education, and communication with the whole medical team are just a few of the

A survey of the ways master's level nursing students learn the research process.

Because of the need for advanced practice nurses to perform more outcome measurement, a survey was conducted in the fall of 1997 to determine how master's level students learned the research process. Three hundred four surveys were mailed to schools with master's programs, and 222 were returned for a return rate of 73%. Sixty-six percent of the programs surveyed required a thesis and/or a research project. However, there was great variation in the research projects. A comprehensive examination was used to measure research ability by 36 programs (16%), either in conjunction with a thesis or res

Patient safety: a shared responsibility.

Patient safety is an essential and vital component of quality nursing care. However, the nation's health care system is prone to errors, and can be detrimental to safe patient care, as a result of basic systems flaws. A variety of stakeholders (society in general; patients; individual nurses; nursing educators, administrators, and researchers; physicians; governments and legislative bodies; professional associations; and accrediting agencies) are responsible for ensuring that patient care is safely delivered and that no harm occurs to patients. The responsibility of these stakeholders in addre
