Nutritional support for liver transplantation: identifying caloric and protein requirements.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the caloric and protein requirements of patients with end-stage liver disease before and for 28 days after liver transplantation. DESIGN: We prospectively assessed 16 adult patients who were scheduled to undergo liver transplantation between December 1989 and September 1990. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nitrogen balance, 24-hour urinary creatinine, 3-methylhistidine, and resting energy expenditure were determined before transplantation and on days 1, 3, 5, 14, and 28 after transplantation. The investigators were unaware of the results of these measurements, and patients w

Nutritional requirements of shigellae for growth in a minimal medium.

Most (about 81%) of the clinical isolates of shigellae that were tested failed to grow in a minimal medium. Of the auxotrophic isolates belonging to the four Shigella species, 98% grew in a minimal medium containing methionine, nicotinic acid, and tryptophan. The combination of methionine and tryptophan appears to be an obligatory requirement for Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 strains, while the combination of nicotinic acid and tryptophan appears to be obligatory for serotype 2. Requirements which varied in other isolates were, however, genetically stable, indicating that the auxotypes may b

Iron homeostasis in older adults: balancing nutritional requirements and health risks.

Iron plays a crucial role in many physiological processes, including oxygen transport, bioenergetics, and immune function. Iron is assimilated from food and also recycled from senescent red blood cells. Iron exists in two dietary forms: heme (animal based) and non-heme (mostly plant based). The body uses iron for metabolic purposes, and stores the excess mainly in splenic and hepatic macrophages. Physiologically, iron excretion in humans is inefficient and not highly regulated, so regulation of intestinal absorption maintains iron homeostasis. Iron losses occur at a steady rate via turnover of

Nutritional support in the critical ill patient: Requirements, prescription and adherence.

INTRODUCTION: In critically ill patients, nutritional support is a challenge in terms of both estimating their requirements and ensuring adherence to the prescribed treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between requirements, prescription and adherence to energy and protein supplementation based on the phase of disease in critically ill patients. SAMPLE AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational and analytical study in patients aged 0-18 years admitted to the paediatric intensive or intermediate care unit in 2020-2021. We collected data on demographic and anthropometric

Nutritional requirements and feeding recommendations for small for gestational age infants.

We define the small for gestational age (SGA) infant as an infant born ≥ 35 weeks' gestation and <10th percentile on the Fenton Growth Chart. Policy statements from many organizations recommend mother's own milk for SGA infants because it meets most of their nutritional requirements and provides short- and long-term benefits. Several distinct patterns of intrauterine growth restriction are identified among the heterogeneous grouping of SGA infants; each varies with regard to neonatal morbidities, requirements for neonatal management, postnatal growth velocities, neurodevelopmental progress, an…

Conditioned nutritional requirements and the pathogenesis and treatment of myocardial failure.

The majority of symptomatic patients with congestive heart failure have been shown to be significantly malnourished. Myocardial and skeletal … ences. In addition, these processes may influence skeletal muscle metabolism and function. Cellular nutritional requirements conditioned by metabolic abnormalities in heart failure are important considerations in the pathogenesis of the skeletal and cardiac muscle dysfunction. A comprehensive restoration of adequate myocyte nutrition would seem to be essential to any ther …

Managing the Nutritional Requirements of the Pediatric End-Stage Kidney Disease Graduate.

The pediatric patient with end-stage kidney disease who transitions to the adult dialysis unit or nephrology center requires a unique nutritional focus. Clinicians in the adult center may be faced with complex issues that have often been part of the patient's journey since early childhood. The causes of kidney disease in children are often quite different than those which affect the adult population and may require different nutritional priorities. Abnormal growth including severe short stature, underweight, overweight or obesity, and poor musculature may affect the long-term health and psycho

Symposium on nutritional requirements of the surgical patient. 2. Peripheral parenteral nutrition.

During total parenteral nutrition hypertonic (25%) dextrose combined with 5% amino acid solutions must be used to achieve the necessary non-protein calorie/nitrogen ratio of 150:1. The resultant hyperosmolarity prohibits utilization of peripheral veins and makes cannulation of the subclavian vein mandatory. This exposes the patient to the risks of infection and technical complications, but these are uncommon and less important than the deleterious effects of chronic starvation. However, under certain clinical conditions it is possible to supply partial parenteral nutrition through peripheral v

Nutritional Evaluation of Commercial Dog and Cat Foods Based on Key Nutrient Requirements.

This study evaluated the nutritional adequacy of commercial dog and cat foods in South Korea by comparing analytically determined nutrient contents with recommended nutrient levels of the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). A total of 96 pet food products for puppies (n = 50), adult dogs (n = 18), kittens (n = 17), and adult cats (n = 11) were collected. Nutrients, including crude protein, crude fat, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, major minerals, and selected trace nutrients, were analyzed using accredited m

Total parenteral nutrition with fat emulsions during pregnancy--nutritional requirements: a case report.

After a corrosive burn of the upper gastrointestinal tract leading to a severe dysphagia and to a weight loss of 15 kilograms, a 21-year-old female was treated by total parenteral nutrition (TPN) during the last 7 weeks of pregnancy. TPN by complete nutritive mixtures comprised daily crystalline amino acid solutions and as energy sources glucose plus lipids, the latter representing 43% of the nonprotein calories. A term normal 2800 gram female was delivered by cesarian section. This case report demonstrates the absence of any side effects on pregnancy related to fat emulsions used in usual pro

Nutritional requirements and biochemical activities of pineapple pink disease bacterial strains from Hawaii.

Bacteria which cause pink disease of pineapple, identified on the basis of their nutritional and biochemical activities, were found to belong to three genera. These bacteria include the following species: Gluconobacter oxydans, Acetobacter aceti, and Erwinia herbicola. Several pink disease strains required one to three vitamins for growth. Both G. oxydans strains 303D and 180 required biotin, nicotinic acid, and pantothenic acid for growth; E. herbicola 189 required only nicotinic acid; however, A aceti 295 was able to grow without any added supplements in glucose mineral salts medium. Optimal
