The study was conducted to collect information regarding food and nutrient intake of hypercholesterolemic adults (male n = 30, female n = 20). The effects of vitamin supplementation on the age-related decline in immune function was studied in a population of elderly subjects with a high prevalence of low and deficient serum values of vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin and pyridoxin, as well as iron and zinc. The immune function was examined by measuring delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity (DCH) after intradermal application of a set of 7 antigens in 72 subjects aged 60-89 years living in two homes for the elderly. In a population of schoolchildren aged 12-15 years in which biochemical deficiencies of vitamin C, riboflavin and pyridoxine affected 30.0, 33.9 and 17.2 per cent of subjects respectively, a small but statistically significant correlation was found between VO2max and vitamin C, riboflavin, vitamin A, and parameters of iron nutrition status. The administration of tablets containing 70.0 mg ascorbic acid, 2.0 mg riboflavin and 2.0 mg pyridoxine resulted in a statistically significant reduction in prevalence of vitamin deficiency, and in a small but statistically significant increase in VO2max. Data from 19 dietary and biochemical indices of nutritional status for 419 participants in the Preschool Nutrition Survey were analyzed to determined the smallest number of variables that could be used to identify all children with any of measure below a criterion of adequacy. Serum transferrin iron and dietary iron intake identified 74% of those at nutritional risk. Additional information on dietary calories, calcium, ascorbic acid, thiamin, and vitamin A identified all subjects at risk.

In a prospective trial anthropometric and biochemical data of 24 neurosurgical patients with primary intracranial tumors were measured to assess preoperative malnutrition in this special group of patients. In spite of starving because of invasive diagnostic procedures, high-dose dexamethasone therapy of peritumoral edema, and changes in food intake because of psychical alterations and repeated vomiting resulting from elevated intracranial pressure no abnormalities were found in the data measured.
