Occupational therapy, cancer, and occupation-centred practice: impact of training in the model of human occupation.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the influence of training in an occupation-centred model on the practice of occupational therapists working in a cancer hospital. There is an increased need for occupation-based rehabilitation services for individuals with and surviving cancer. Incorporating an occupation-centred model into practice has unique challenges for occupational therapists working in oncology settings. Utilizing an occupation-centred model of practice may influence the therapeutic reasoning of occupational therapists. METHODS: A generic qualitative inquiry (Patton, 2015) was used to

Occupation as means and ends in paediatric occupational therapy - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence-based knowledge in paediatric occupational therapy about the effectiveness of interventions using daily activities as a treatment modality in improving children's participation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of occupation-based and occupation-focused interventions in improving participation in everyday occupations for young children with a disability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review based on Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and critical appraisal tools was conducted. Six databases were searched for quantitative …

Standards of Practice for Occupational Therapy.

This document defines minimum standards for the practice of occupational therapy. According to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process (4th ed.; OTPF-4), occupational therapy is defined as the therapeutic use of everyday life occupations with persons, groups, or populations (i.e., the client) for the purpose of enhancing or enabling participation. . . . Occupational therapy services are provided for habilitation, rehabilitation, and promotion of health and wellness for clients with disability- and non-disability-related needs. These services include acquisition and pres…

Occupation emerges in the process of therapy.

OBJECTIVE: The current literature offers no cohesive definition of occupation-based practice. Current definitions emphasize intervention forms and contexts, which do not reflect the complexity of practice. This article demonstrates that the therapeutic relationship and the meanings that are created in the therapy process are central aspects of occupation-based practice. Occupation, as an idea that emerges in the therapeutic process, has aspects of both doing and becoming. METHOD: The authors conducted observation sessions and interviews with an occupational therapist, Nancy, who used multiple

Occupational therapy and the postpolio syndrome.

Approximately 75,000 polio survivors are experiencing new weakness, pain, and fatigue that are related to their initial disease. These problems affect their functional ability; therefore, they are of concern to occupational therapists. Overwork of a weakened neuromuscular system is believed to be the cause of these late symptoms. This article reviews current writings on the late effects of poliomyelitis. An understanding of the symptoms, causality, and psychosocial ramifications of this phenomenon facilitates effective occupational therapy intervention. Guidelines for occupational therapy asse…

[Homelessness, mental health and occupational therapy.].

Persons who are homeless with a mental illness constitute a significant portion of the homeless population. They have a myriad of occupational performance problems and are further compromised by systemic and political issues. There is growing evidence that occupational therapy can make a contribution to the health and quality of life of this marginalized, under served population. This paper describes the process and challenges providing occupational therapy services to persons who are homeless with mental health problems, addictions, and serious mental illnesses using the Canadian Model of Occ…

[Questions regarding demarcation in occupational therapy].

Work therapy (Arbeitstherapie) has become an intermediate link between medical and vocational rehabilitation. It is distinct from insurable employment primarily in that it is guided by a medical treatment plan directed at the rehabilitative needs of the patient. Delimitation problems as against insurable employment mostly occur due to the requirement that the work therapy setting should be realistic. This entails a risk of abuse. Where work therapy is provided in practice, greater note should be taken of today's degree of differentiation in vocational rehabilitation, which has made available a

Primary Contact Occupational Therapy Hand Clinics: The pull of an occupational perspective.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary contact models of care are an emerging area of occupational therapy practice that aim to respond to the changing health-care landscape. There is a dearth of literature exploring an occupational perspective in primary contact roles, and literature in the broader scope of hand therapy has recognised that occupational therapists' practice often aligns with the biomedical worldview. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the practice of occupational therapists within Primary Contact Occupational Therapy Hand (PCOTH) Clinics from an occupational perspective. METHOD: This et…
