Structure prediction and functional characterization of secondary metabolite proteins of Ocimum.

Various species of Ocimum have acquired special attention due to their medicinal properties. Different parts of the plant (root, stem, flower, leaves) are used in the treatment of a wide range of disorders from centuries. Experimental structures (X-ray and NMR) of proteins from different Ocimum species, are not yet available in the Protein Databank (PDB). These proteins play a key role in various metabolic pathways in Ocimum. 3D structures of the proteins are essential to determine most of their functions. Homology modeling approach was employed in order to derive structures for these proteins…

Anti-candidal Effect of Ocimum sanctum: A Systematic Review on Microbial Studies.

Candida albicans is the most prevalent candidal species in humans. It is the causative agent and is most commonly associated with more than 90% of serious systemic fungal infections. Even though there are numerous anti-fungal agents, new strains of pathogens develop resistance against these agents. In order to prevent resistance, plant-based drugs can be considered as an alternative therapy. Recent studies show that few herbs consist of active ingredients acting against specific pathogens. The aim of the present study is to understand the anti-candidal effect of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) based on…

Effect of Ocimum sanctum fixed oil on vascular permeability and leucocytes migration.

Ocimum sanctum fixed oil significantly inhibited the rise in protein concentration and dye leakage in peritoneal fluid in experimentally induced peritoneal inflammation in mice. In carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats, the fixed oil showed significant inhibition of leucocytes migration in the pleural exudate. The results suggest that the fixed oil can inhibit enhancement of the vascular/capillary permability and leucocyte migration following inflammatory stimulus.
