Pediatric Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors.

Pediatric odontogenic cysts and tumors are rare and often associated with developing or impacted teeth. Odontogenic cysts are broadly categorized as inflammatory or developmental while odontogenic tumors are classified histologically as epithelial, mesenchymal, or mixed tumors. This article will discuss the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of odontogenic cysts and tumors in the pediatric population.

Pediatric Oral Pathology: Odontogenic Cysts.

Cysts encountered in the head and neck typically arise from epithelium that would normally be programmed to form teeth or tooth-supporting structures (odontogenic epithelium). These cysts come with a confusing array of similar-sounding names and histopathologic features that are sometimes shared between conditions. Here we describe and contrast the relatively-common lesions: hyperplastic dental follicle, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst, buccal bifurcation cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, glandular odontogenic cyst, and the less-common gingival cyst of the new-born and thyroglossal duct cyst. The

Ultrastructure of odontogenic jaw cysts.

The epithelial ultrastructure of six radicular cysts, four follicular cysts, and five keratocysts was studied with special attention to the epithelium-connective tissue junction. Inflammation was found to cause widened interepithelial cell spaces which often harbored inflammatory cells in the radicular and follicular cysts. The characteristic structures at the epithelium-connective tissue junction (plasma membrane, lamina lucida and basal lamina) were not affected by inflammation. Fibrous structures were seen to connect the basal lamina to the underlining collagenous connective tissue. The ker

Clinicopathologic comparison of glandular odontogenic cysts and dentigerous cysts.

BACKGROUND: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare developmental cyst, comprising <0.5% of odontogenic cysts. Its overlap with other lesions, particularly dentigerous cysts (DCs), makes diagnosis challenging. This study aimed to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics of GOCs and DCs to aid in differential diagnosis and treatment planning. METHODS: Patient records with GOC and DC from 1996 to 2025 were reviewed. Demographic, clinical, and radiographic data were collected, and histopathological slides were re-evaluated to assess eight epithelial features. GOC spectrum (GOCS) lesions …

Comparison of cytokeratin expressions among orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts, epidermoid cysts and odontogenic keratocysts: An immunohistochemical study.

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts are keratinizing jaw cysts and due their association with impacted teeth and keratinaceous content, they resemble odontogenic keratocysts but differ in regards to biological behaviour, being less aggressive. To unravel the nature of OOCs, as they resemble epidermoid cysts histologically and due to their developmental resemblances to OKCs, this study was conducted. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To compare the cytokeratin expressions of CK 10 and CK 19 among orthokeratinized odontogenic keratocysts, epidermoid cysts and odontogenic keratocysts by immunohistoc…

Odontogenic Keratocyst, Orthokeratinized Odontogenic Cyst and Epidermoid Cyst - an Immunohistochemical Comparison.

OBJECTIVES: There are two types of keratinized cystic lesions arising in the jaw - developmental cysts of odontogenic origin (odontogenic keratocyst - OKC and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst - OOC) and epidermoid cyst (EC) of undetermined origin. These lesions have overlapping histopathological features and their treatment depends on the correct diagnosis. The aim of our study was to determine diagnostically relevant differences between these cysts and to establish criteria for diagnosing intraosseous EC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An immunohistochemical analysis comprised of various cytokerati

[The odontogenic keratocyst--odontogenic cyst or benign tumor?].

The odontogenic keratocyst is the third most common cyst of the jaws, after the follicular and radicular cyst. Keratocysts most commonly occ … e rates of recurrence. Besides a predilection for recurrence, the keratocysts, in contrast to other odontogenic cysts, show a more aggressive clinical behavior and demonstrate a high mitotic count and higher turnover rate of the epithelium. This led to the tentative suggestion that the keratocyst might be a benign cystic neoplasm rather than simply an odontogenic c …

Odontogenic cysts. Analysis of 856 cases.

Odontogenic cysts (OC) are one of the main causes of jaw destruction. Information about these lesions in the Mexican population is scant. And for this reason the purpose of this work is to describe the frequency of the different varieties of OC recorded in two oral pathology services in Mexico City. As well as to compare the findings with those previously reported in other studies and to analyze the association of these lesions with the gender of the affected patients and the type of oral pathology service. There were a total of 856 OC; of these, 449 (52.5%) occurred in men, 403 in women (47%)…

CD1a-positive cells in odontogenic cysts.

Langerhans cells (LC) are bone marrow-derived cells that have a CD1a-positive immunophenotype and are an important portion of the cell-mediated immune response. The aim of this study was an immunohistochemical evaluation of CD1a positive cells in different types of oral cysts. Fifty-five cysts were studied: 18 odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), of which five were orthokeratotic and 13 parakeratotic; 19 radicular cysts; and 18 dentigerous cysts. Positive LC was 80% for orthokeratotic OKC, 33% for parakeratotic OKC, approximately 35% for radicular cysts, and approximately 20% for dentigerous cysts.

P53 protein expression in odontogenic cysts.

p53 protein seems to be related to the suppression of cell proliferation. p53-positive tissues seem to have a higher proliferative activity than p53-negative ones. Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has a different behavior from other types of cysts because it is more aggressive, with a tendency to recurrence. Twenty-two dentigerous cysts, 24 radicular cysts, and 20 OKCs were used in the present study. Two dentigerous cysts (9.1%), 2 radicular cysts (8.3%), and 9 OKCs (45%) expressed the p53 protein. The differences between the three groups were statistically significant (p = 0.003). In 10 cases of

Mast cells in human odontogenic cysts.

Mast cells have been shown to be present in substantial numbers in both nonkeratinizing and keratinizing odontogenic cysts and could be seen in the connective tissue capsule and the epithelial lining. Within the cyst capsule, mast cells were more prevalent just beneath the epithelium than in deeper areas. This distribution pattern for mast cells is in accord with the histochemical picture for heparin staining in odontogenic cysts. In the non-keratinizing cysts, there appeared to be some trend towards mast cells being associated with increasing inflammation but not in the odontogenic keratocyst…

Pattern of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts.

The jaws are host to a variety of cysts due in large part to the tissues involved in tooth formation. Odontogenic cysts (OCs) are unique in that they affect only the oral and maxillofacial region. There are few studies from sub-Saharan Africa. This study was aimed at describing the pattern of various types of cysts in the oral and maxillofacial region in a Kenyan population. This was done at the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine and Pathology, University of Nairobi Dental Hospital. This was a retrospective audit. All histopathologic records were retrieved from 199…

The polymorphous odontogenic cyst.

Over the years there have been sporadic reports of unusual cystic lesions of the jaws, not readily classified under conventional headings but which have been variously diagnosed as median-mandibular, glandular, sialo-odontogenic or botryoid odontogenic cyst. We present five cases which do not fit into other categories of odontogenic cyst, two of which have recurred within a few years of conservative treatment. This paper aims to alert clinicians to the propensity for regrowth of these cysts, proposes the term polymorphous odontogenic cyst for these lesions, to encompass their varied histologic

[Botryoid odontogenic cyst].

INTRODUCTION: The botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) is a developmental cyst of odontogenic epithelial origin considered as a rare multilocular variety of lateral periodontal cyst (WHO 1992). This cystic lesion site is in the periodontal space of vital teeth. OBSERVATION: A 21-year-old woman consulted for a swelling of the anterior maxillary region. The clinical examination revealed bucal swelling extending from the left central incisor to the first left premolar. The mucosa was normal. The adjacent teeth were vital. X-ray revealed a bilocular radiolucency extending between the roots of teeth 21

p53 protein in odontogenic cysts: increased expression in some odontogenic keratocysts.

AIMS: To assess p53 protein expression in a range of odontogenic cysts arising in the mouth, including those of developmental and inflammatory origin. METHODS: p53 protein was identified using the polyclonal antibody CM-1, together with a standard immunoperoxidase technique. A total of 36 cystic lesions were examined, all of which were histologically benign. RESULTS: Expression of p53 protein was identified within the lining of five of 12 odontogenic keratocysts but was not detected in the other cystic lesions in the series. CONCLUSIONS: This is believed to be the first report that identifi…

The expression of cytokeratin in keratocystic odontogenic tumor, orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst, dentigerous cyst, radicular cyst and dermoid cyst.

The epithelial lining of odontogenic keratocysts exhibits either parakeratosis or orthokeratosis. In 2005, the WHO classified odontogenic keratocysts with parakeratosis as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT). Odontogenic keratocysts with orthokeratosis were not classified as odontogenic tumors, but instead referred to as orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts (OOC). To clarify the difference between these two lesions, we investigated their biological characteristics using immunohistochemical studies for cytokeratins (CK) in KCOT and OOC as well as in dentigerous cysts (DC), radicular cysts (RC)…
