Spontaneous photo-onycholysis.

Three cases of onycholysis following, and apparently caused by, sun exposure are reported. No case was associated with drug ingestion or demonstrable metabolic abnormality. Cutaneous phototesting of all patients with an irradiation monochromator was within normal limits, although the action spectrum for the defect may lie in the ultraviolet-A (UV-A) region. This appears to be the first report of spontaneous photo-onycholysis.

Tetracycline photo-onycholysis.

Photo-onycholysis is a rare complication of tetracycline therapy. Its occurrence is probably greater than the few reported cases indicate. It is hoped that this case report will alert physicians to its occurrence.

Vitamin A-associated onycholysis.

Onycholysis is a disorder of the nails, described as the separation of the nail bed from the nail plate. While onycholysis most commonly occurs due to trauma to the nail, such as after manicures or chemical exposure, it can also result from drug-induced photosensitivity. Many medications have been linked to onycholysis, including tetracyclines, psoralens, and retinoids, which are synthetic derivatives of vitamin A. Oral retinoid use has been associated with various nail changes, but there are no reports of onycholysis resulting from oral vitamin A intake. Thus, we present the case of an 85-yea…

Not French manicure but onycholysis.

French manicure, a simple and elegant manicure style, caught the public's attention by the 19th century in French nail salons. Now this style has spread all over the world and is the first choice of 80% of women in the USA and Europe. It consists of a natural, pink, beige, or nude base tipped with pure white at the distal end.Onycholysis is a disease of the nails characterized by separation of the nail plate from the nail bed, with variable causes. We present 2 cases of onycholysis that resemble the beautiful and elegant French manicure.

Finger and toenail onycholysis.

Onycholysis - the separation of the nail plate from the nail bed occurs in fingers and toenails. It is diagnosed by the whitish appearance of the separated nail plate from the nail bed. In fingers, the majority is caused by trauma, manicuring, occupational or self-induced behavior. The most common disease producing fingernail onycholysis is psoriasis and pustular psoriasis. Phototoxic dermatitis, due to drugs can also produce finger onycholysis. Once the separation occurs, the environmental flora sets up temporary colonization in the available space. Finger onycholysis is most common in women.…

Ischemic onycholysis of the hands.

Onycholysis is the distal and/or lateral separation of the nail from the nail bed. Although it can be idiopathic, there are several factors associated with the development of this condition. Ischemia is recognized as one of the possible causes, but this relationship has been poorly described in the literature. We report a case of onycholysis with a striking clinical picture and discuss the role of ischemia in the development of the lesions.

Benoxaprofen-induced photo-onycholysis.

Benoxaprofen (Opren) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent used in the treatment of arthritis. Photosensitivity, including onycholysis, has been reported in the rheumatologic literature. This drug has recently been approved for use in the United States under the name of Oraflex. In order to alert the dermatology community, we report a case of photo-onycholysis which developed in a patient being treated with benoxaprofen and review the data on this drug and its side effects.

Onycholysis associated with paclitaxel.

Chemotherapeutic agents are known to cause a myriad of cutaneous side effects that the dermatologist is often called upon to identify and treat. The taxoid drug paclitaxel is commonly used in oncology. To date, there have been few adverse dermatologic effects reported secondary to paclitaxel use. This is in contrast to the related drug docetaxel. We report a case in which paclitaxel caused onycholysis and nail loss in a patient being treated for lung cancer. To our knowledge, this finding has not previously been reported in the American dermatologic literature, though it has been reported in a…
