History of opisthorchiasis control started in 1950 as a small scale helminthiasis control program in some high risk areas. Following a number of studies and trial projects of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, the national liver fluke control program has been developed and operated under several National Public Health Development Plans. Opisthorchiasis viverrini is a liver fluke infection causing a serious public health problem in Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and South Vietnam because it acts as a strong promoter of cholangiocarcinoma. We report on 2 patients from Siberia suffering from an infection with the parasite Opisthorchis felineus. The unusual course of their disease pretended in case 1 an eosinophilic leukemia and in case 2 a malignoma of the gallbladder. The Opisthorchiasis is endemic in large areas of Asia and Russia. Humans acquire the infection by eating raw fresh-water fish. Symptoms are nonspecific, but detection of eosinophilia in travellers or residents of endemic areas should induce analysis for specific antibodies against Opisthorchis species. Cholangiocarcinoma is very common in areas endemic for the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini. Survival after surgical treatment of cholangiocarcinoma associated with opisthorchiasis was studied prospectively in 30 patients, all of whom resided in an endemic area. The median age was 52 (range 32-69) years and twenty-five patients were men. Seven patients had their tumours removed, four with concomitant liver resection. On the basis of answers to questionnaires distributed among 338 opisthorchiasis patients and 123 healthy persons in the Komi-Permiak Autonomous Okrug of Perm Province the risk factors leading to contacting opisthorchiasis were studied. As a result, a more complete characterization of the focus of this infection was obtained and a table was made, permitting the screening of population with the use of questionnaires and the determination of risk groups in this disease.

Opisthorchiasis is a relatively common disease in the northeast of Thailand. Fifteen cases were studied by CT, revealing interesting findings: 1. Fourteen cases had abnormal liver CT. 2. Dilatation of intrahepatic biliary tree was very common, in various degrees. 3. Most patients had co-existing cholangiocarcinoma, some with peritoneal seeding and/or regional lymph node involvement. A single stool examination revealed pathogenic intestinal parasites in 462 (58%) of 796 vietnamese and cambodian refugees. 56 (7.0%) were infected with Clonorchis sinensis and/or Opisthorchis viverrini. These patients received Praziquantel in a dosage of 20 mg/kg bwt. p.day on 3 consecutive days. Parasitological controls were completed after 12 months.
