The effect of opium dependency on testis volume: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Given the paucity of data on possible testis changes in opioid dependents, we sought to compare the testis volumes between a group of opium dependents and a group of healthy controls. OBJECTIVE: Comparison of testis volume between opium dependents and healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study recruited 100 men with opium dependency (cases) and 100 healthy men (controls) in Iran, in 2008. A checklist containing questions about age, height, weight, daily amount of cigarette use, and duration of cigarette use for all the participants as well as daily amount of

Buprenorphine treatment of opium-dependent outpatients seeking treatment in Iran.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 1-, 3-, and 8-mg per day doses of buprenorphine in the maintenance treatment of opium … wo groups. The results support the efficacy and safety of buprenorphine for outpatient treatment of opium dependence and seem to indicate that the highest dose (8 mg) of buprenorphine was the best of the three doses for Iranian opium-dependent patients to increase their retention in treatment.

Sexual Dysfunction and Its Correlates Among Men Dependent on Natural Opium.

BACKGROUND: Opioids can adversely affect sexual function by impacting the endocrine system, particularly the pituitary gland and sex hormones. While synthetic opioids have been well studied, little data exists on natural opium's impact on sexual functioning, especially in India, where it is considered an aphrodisiac. This study aims to evaluate sexual dysfunction and related factors among men who are dependent on natural opium. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 107 participants with a dependency on natural opium. The assessment included the Arizona sexual experience scale (

Association Between GSTP1 Ile105Val Genetic Polymorphism and Dependency to Heroin and Opium.

Relationship between glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1, OMIM: 134660) variants and the risk of drug dependency is unknown. Chronic use of illegal drugs leads to oxidative stress, which can be alleviated by cellular detoxification mechanisms. There are several polymorphisms in the GSTP1, including Ile105Val (rs1695). This polymorphism leads to an Ile105Val amino acid change and may alter the GSTP1 enzyme activity. There is no study on the association between this polymorphism and risks of heroin (HD) or opium (OD) dependency. This paper consists of two case-control studies. The first study co

Effect of opium dependency on secondary intention wound healing in a rat model: an experimental study.

Opium dependency is a social and health problem in some middle eastern countries like Iran. Many of these people may require surgery. This study investigates the effects of opium dependency on histological parameters of secondary intention wound healing in rat. A full-thickness wound (2 × 2 cm in diameters) was created on the dorsum of two groups of rats, a normal control group and a second group of rat depended to opium (Badawy's method). Several times during 14 days postwounding, the wound was excised with peripheral margins of normal skin and was evaluated for cellular population, reepithel
