The role of modes in nonlinear fiber optical computing.

We investigate the nonlinear propagation of light in graded-index multimode fiber, utilizing it as an optical computing unit, and quantify how it employs waveguide modes to process information. Using a time-dependent spatiotemporal propagation model with modal decomposition, we evaluate several benchmark regression and classification tasks and study the modal content of the generated speckles, which couples with a simple digital layer to perform optical computing. Analysis of modal entropy and energy-based mode counts reveals that effective computation is confined to a low-dimensional modal su

Tuning of the Brillouin scattering properties in microstructured optical fibers by liquid infiltration.

We demonstrate the possibility to modify the Brillouin scattering properties of a microstructured pure-silica core optical fiber, by infiltrating a liquid inside its holes. In particular, we show that the dependence of the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) on the temperature can be reduced by infiltration, owing to the large negative thermo-optic coefficient of the liquid. Infiltrating a chloroform-acetonitrile mixture with a refractive index of 1.365 inside the holes of a suspended-core fiber with a core diameter of 3 µm, the BFS temperature sensing coefficient is reduced by ≈ 21%, while the st

Immobilization strategies of Brucella particles on optical fibers for use in chemiluminescence immunosensors.

Immunosensors are powerful analytical tools in clinical and veterinary diagnostics. This has led us to design a chemiluminescent immunosensor aimed at identifying anti-Brucella antibodies using optical fibers as the transducer. In order to develop the optimal transducer, to achieve an optimal chemical modification thereby allowing an optimal covalent binding of the protein receptor, several cleaning strategies and silane coupling agents were investigated. Brucella killed organisms were used as a model receptor for quantifying anti-Brucella IgG antibodies in a suspension compared to conventiona…

Temperature characteristics of fiber-optic shearer cables.

During the reciprocating motion of a coal shearer, shearer cables are exposed to complex underground conditions, including high load current, repeated bending and dragging, and limited heat dissipation. These factors may lead to excessive conductor temperature and pose safety risks. However, the temperature response of embedded optical-fiber units in shearer cables under different motion states remains insufficiently clarified, especially the relationship between optical-fiber temperature and the temperatures of key cable components. To address this gap, an MCPT-1.9/3.3(3 × 120 + 1 × 70 + 4 ×

A tactile gripper on an optical fiber for perception and actuation.

Optical fibers with integrated robotic microstructures are promising for cutting-edge applications. However, the development of microbots on a fiber system for synergistic sensing and actuation is challenging. Herein, inspired from natural Bobbit worm, we report a tactile gripper-on-a-fiber system that integrates wave spring, planar reflector with a scattering cone and a smart gripper on a single-mode fiber. The wave spring fabricated via two-photon polymerization of SU-8 can convert the applied micro-force into detectable stretching or compression, serving as a Fabry-Perot interferences senso…

Endovascular navigation with Fiber Optic RealShape technology.

OBJECTIVE: Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology has recently been introduced as an adjunctive guidance technology that allows real-time three-dimensional visualization of dedicated endovascular devices while avoiding radiation exposure. It consists of equipment which sends pulses of light through hair-thin optical fibers that run within a dedicated hydrophilic wire and selective catheters. The purpose of the study was to report the observed benefits and limitations related to the first edition of FORS technology. METHODS: Data were collected prospectively from the first 50 patients undergo…

Regeneration of optic nerve fibers of adult mammals.

The pathway from the retina to the brain in mammals provides a well-defined model system for investigation of not only surviving axotomy but also axonal regeneration of injured neurons. Here I introduce our recent works on axonal regeneration in the optic nerve (OpN) of adult cats. Fibers of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) extend beyond the crush site of OpN with injections of a macrophage stimulator (oxidized galectin-1) or a Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitor (Y-39983 or Y-27632) while axonal extension is blocked with injection of saline. Elongation of crushed optic fibers, however, is slowed after 2

[Optic fiber endoscopy in childhood with facial mask].

Flexible fibroscopy is the method of choice in the diagnosis of upper airway (UA) pathologies. Some Authors believe that it should be carried out under local anaesthesia even in children less than one year of age. In this article, the Authors report on their experience with general anaesthesia, using an airway mask that simultaneously allows the flexible endoscope to be inserted and the patient to be ventilated. The study was carried out in the period 2000-2001 in 32 subjects, 18 males and 14 females between 2 and 12 months of age who presented different degrees of stridor and dyspnoea. 18 pat

Vibration-insensitive polarimetric fiber optic current sensor based on orbital angular momentum modes in an air-core optical fiber.

Current or magnetic field sensing is usually achieved by exploiting the Faraday effect of an optical material combined with an interferometric probe that provides the sensitivity. Being interferometric in nature, such sensors are typically sensitive to several other environmental parameters such as vibrations and mechanical disturbances, which, however, inevitably impose the inaccuracy and instability of the detection. Here we demonstrate a polarimetric fiber optic current sensor based on orbital angular momentum modes of an air-core optical fiber. In the fiber, spin-orbit interactions imply t

Delayed Surgical Reversal of Optic Nerve Compression Leads to Exponential Degeneration of Optic Nerve Fibers and Selective Sparing of the Small Fibers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical reversal of experimental optic nerve compression in treating persistent compressive optic neuropathy and to explore the relationship between surgical outcomes and the timing of the procedure. METHODS: Surgical reversal procedures (decompression surgery) were conducted at five time intervals: 1, 3, and 7 days and 2 and 3 weeks following optic nerve compression in a rabbit model. The groups were labeled as DC-1d, DC-3d, DC-7d, DC-2w, and DC-3w, respectively. The study investigated changes in ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness using spectral-

Benefits of Side-Firing Optical Fibers in Endoscopic Laser Treatment of the Larynx.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate potential tissue coverage of side-firing optical fibers in office-based endoscopic laser treatment of larynx, as well as to demonstrate their enhanced ability to address challenging anatomic areas. METHOD: We performed a comparative study of four different fiber designs: a traditional forward-facing fiber, and three side-firing fibers that emit light at an angle of 45°, 70°, and 90°, respectively. The study was conducted in simulation, using eight three-dimensional models of the human larynx generated from microtomography x-ray scans. A computer program simulated the i…

Comparison between Different Structures of Suspended-Core Microstructured Optical Fibers for Volatiles Sensing.

In this paper, different core structures of microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) for low-finesse Fabry⁻Pérot (FP) sensors are experimentally compared to get the highest sensitivity. These devices are designed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measurements. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited by sputtering on the MOFs and different optical fast Fourier transform (FFT) phase responses from the FP were measured for saturated atmospheres of ethanol. It has been demonstrated that the sensitivities of the developed sensors depend strongly on the geometry and the dimensions of the M…

Synthesis of MFI zeolite films on optical fibers for detection of chemical vapors.

We report the development of a novel zeolite-incorporated optical fiber sensor and demonstrate its capability for in situ detection of chemical vapors. The sensor comprises a polycrystalline silicalite thin film grown upon the cleaved end face of a standard single-mode optical fiber. The sensor device operates by measuring the optical reflectivity of the zeolite crystals, which changes reversibly in response to the amount of chemical vapor adsorbed in its crystalline microporous structure. The sensor has been successfully demonstrated for measuring the concentration of isopropanol vapor in mix

Imaging of the optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer in acute optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate whether optical coherence tomography (OCT-3) and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT-2) can be used to measure changes of the optic disc and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in eyes with acute retrobulbar optic neuritis that have no clinically apparent optic disc swelling. To correlate these findings with presentation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the affected optic nerve. METHODS: Eight consecutive patients with acute retrobulbar optic neuritis, who had no prior optic neuritis in either eye, were prospectively investigated at presentation and at bet

Optical fiber humidity sensor based on a hollow core fiber filled with BPQDs-PVA.

An optical fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometric humidity sensor based on black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, and experimentally verified. The sensor is constructed by splicing a brief hollow core fiber (HCF) with a single-mode fiber (SMF) and filling the BPQDs-PVA compound into the HCF. When the proposed humidity sensor is placed in a humidity environment, BPQDs-PVA adsorbs water molecules in the air with increasing humidity, which changes the length of the FP cavity, as well as the refractive index o

3D Printing of Glass Micro-Optics with Subwavelength Features on Optical Fiber Tips.

Integration of functional materials and structures on the tips of optical fibers has enabled various applications in micro-optics, such as sensing, imaging, and optical trapping. Direct laser writing is a 3D printing technology that holds promise for fabricating advanced micro-optical structures on fiber tips. To date, material selection has been limited to organic polymer-based photoresists because existing methods for 3D direct laser writing of inorganic materials involve high-temperature processing that is not compatible with optical fibers. However, organic polymers do not feature stabilit…
