Tongue-tie or ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum resulting in limited tongue movement. Ankyloglossia can affect feeding, speech and oral hygiene, as well as have mechanical and social effects. Diagnosis of tongue-tie is based on a clinical examination. Tongue mobility and appearance associated with the insertion, as well as the attachment and the shortness of the lingual frenulum should be evaluated. Ankyloglossia management should be considered at any age considering the risk-benefit evaluation and because of the

In the oral cavity, the frenum is an anatomical structure composed of mucosal folds that connect the lip and cheek to the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and underlying periosteum. An abnormally positioned maxillary labial frenum can contribute to the formation of a diastema and gingival recession. Various techniques have been proposed for the correction of aberrant frenal attachments, including frenectomy and frenal repositioning procedures. This case report presents an approach, combining frenectomy with a double lateral pedicle flap. The procedure involves closure across the midline by utilizing

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic disorders in which patients frequently present with fragile skin and mucosal surfaces that blister following minor trauma; 23 subtypes have been recognized, but their precise pathogenesis and etiology remain obscure. There is no treatment for EB, only palliative therapy. Oral bullae are the most common oral finding and affect all surfaces. Patients with EB present a unique challenge in terms of periodontal therapy. The following article reviews this disorder and describes the complications encountered when providing periodontal plastic surgery t

We present three cases for the management of paediatric tongue tie (ankyloglossia) through laser-assisted frenectomy and postoperative oral myofunctional exercises. Ankyloglossia, characterised by a restricted lingual frenulum, poses challenges in tongue movement and is traditionally treated with surgical interventions. Laser technology, particularly diode lasers, has shown promise in paediatric cases due to reduced bleeding, minimal discomfort and faster recovery. The case series presents three instances where patients underwent laser-assisted frenectomy, demonstrating improved tongue functio

BACKGROUND: Maxillary frenectomy in children is a common procedure, but concerns about scar tissue affecting diastema closure prevent many clinicians from treating prior to orthodontics.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if maxillary frenectomy is safe and if diastema size is affected by early treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paediatric patients with hypertrophic maxillary frena were treated under local anaesthesia with diode laser and CO2 laser. Diastema width was compared by calibrating and digitally measuring initial and postoperative intraoral photographs.
RESULTS: In total, 109 patients were i

Various oral complications such as gingival recession, restricted lip movement and tooth malalignment are the result of an abnormal frenum. Management of these types of frenum is either frenectomy or frenotomy. Methods for performing frenectomies include the conventional scalpel technique, Z-plasty, Miller's technique, V-Y plasty, lasers, and electrocautery. This case report details the successful management of an abnormal frenum attachment using electrocautery to ease and reduce discomfort to the 19-year-old female patient, causing aesthetic concerns. For its precision, minimal bleeding and p

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition characterized by limited tongue mobility due to an abnormality of the lingual frenulum. Long considered benign, it is now the subject of growing interest, with an increase in diagnoses and neonatal frenotomies, amid controversy stemming from the heterogeneity of diagnostic criteria and the limited level of evidence regarding long-term benefits.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to critically analyze the embryological basis of ankyloglossia, its clinical implications, the indications for frenotomy, and the medico-legal issues associ

The use of laser energy is by now established in some areas of the medical and dental professions. This article reviews the history of the carbon dioxide laser and discusses the advantages, indications, and contraindications of laser in soft tissue and periodontal surgery. Four clinical cases are presented to illustrate laser techniques in excisional biopsy, gingivectomy, coagulation of graft donor site, and a frenectomy procedure. The learning objective of this article is to familiarize the reader with this relatively new addition to oral surgical procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Diode laser with wavelengths ranging from 810 to 980 nm in a continuous or pulsed mode was used as a possible instrument for soft tissue surgery in the oral cavity.
DISCUSSION: Diode laser is one of laser systems in which photons are produced by electric current with wavelengths of 810, 940 and 980nm. The application of diode laser in soft tissue oral surgery has been evaluated from a safety point of view, for facial pigmentation and vascular lesions and in oral surgery excision; for example frenectomy, epulis fissuratum and fibroma. The advantages of laser application are that

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, the diagnosis of infant ankyloglossia and the number of lingual frenotomy procedures have increased markedly, particularly in the context of breastfeeding difficulties. Frenotomy is often perceived as a relatively simple solution to poor latch, nipple pain or suboptimal milk transfer, yet expert statements highlight substantial gaps in the evidence base, heterogeneous diagnostic criteria and concerns about overdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery in breastfeeding dyads. This creates important challenges for clinicians and lactation consultants who must distinguis

Children with intellectual disability often experience difficulties in accessing routine dental care because behavioural limitations and associated medical conditions make treatment challenging. Untreated dental infections in such patients may pose significant health risks, particularly when systemic conditions are present. A child in middle childhood with moderate intellectual disability presented with pain and progressive swelling in the right posterior mandibular region. The patient was non-verbal and had underlying cardiac dysfunction and encephalopathy, which further complicated clinical

Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition characterized by restricted tongue mobility due to an abnormal lingual frenum, which may impair breastfeeding in newborns and infants. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent functional complications. This case series describes 35 newborns and infants with ankyloglossia who underwent frenectomy using a super-pulsed dual-wavelength diode laser. The procedures were performed using a diode laser operating at wavelengths of 810 nm (1.2 W) and 980 nm (1.4 W), delivering a final output power of 1.1 W, in super-pulsed mode (20 Hz frequency, 0.05

Tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia or ankyloglossia inferior, is a relatively common finding in pediatric surgical outpatient clinics. It occurs as a result of a short, tight, lingual frenum causing tethering of the tongue tip. It is a common oral finding in infants and children, which is often neglected. Although most cases resolve or are asymptomatic, some patients develop articulation problems and other concerns related to poor tongue-tip mobility. In this article, we report on a 5-year old girl with a tongue tie, who underwent frenectomy using monopolar diathermy under local anesthesi
