Bonebridge is an active bone conduction device that consists of a bone conduction-floating mass transducer (BC-FMT) and magnet internally and an audio processor externally. Surgery for implantation can be performed under local anesthesia but requires surgical planning for adequate bone depth for the BC-FMT well. Since its introduction in 2009, more than 150 people in the Netherlands have received an osseointegration prosthesis following leg amputation. Serious complications such as septic or aseptic loosening and breakage of the implant are rare. In this article we highlight the results so far, the indications and contra-indications, our first experiences with patients who have undergone amputation due to vascular disease, and the future of osseointegration treatment in the Netherlands.

In this study, the process of osseointegration on titanium implant surfaces with different physicochemical treatments subjected to a simulated corporal fluid submersion was evaluated using the concept of fractal dimension. It was found that different treatments led to rather different calcium phosphate crystal growth patterns, with fractal dimension ranging from 1.68 to 1.93. The observed crystal patterns may be explained by a general deposition, diffusion, and aggregation growth mechanism, where diffusing particle sticking probability plays a fundamental role.

Quantitative assessment of osseointegration remains a goal of researchers and clinicians alike. In this study, an instrument was designed for this purpose and tested in an animal model. Effective mechanical impedance, linearized for quasi-static force, was measured in 22 implants placed in the hind tibiae of 2 large hounds. This assessment evaluated the clinical feasibility of using narrow-diameter implants to support a mandibular overdenture. Twelve patients presenting with an edentulous mandible were recruited from nine dental offices. Each patient received two to four implants in the mandible.
