Clavicular Gorham-Stout disease: a rare case report and literature review.

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare idiopathic osteolytic disorder, and its diagnosis depends on a comprehensive evaluation of clinical, imaging, and pathological findings, alongside the systematic exclusion of other diseases. We report a case of GSD characterized by progressive clavicular bone destruction and resorption following low-energy trauma. Monitoring biochemical markers related to bone turnover is essential for early diagnosis and disease assessment, which is critical for controlling disease progression. The early administration of osteoclast activity inhibitors, combined with activ

[Gorham-Stout disease : a rare entity].

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by progressive osteolysis due to abnormal proliferation of lymphatic and vascular tissue within the bone. It can affect the entire skeleton. Symptoms may include bone pain, swelling, and fractures. Diagnosis relies mainly on imaging and histology. Treatment may include bisphosphonates (osteoclast inhibitors), sirolimus (mTOR (mechanistic Target Of Rapamycin) inhibitor), radiotherapy, and surgery. The prognosis is uncertain and depending on the location and severity of the lesions, the condition may be life-threate

[Disappearing bone disease of the shoulder (Gorham-Stout Syndrom)].

The spontaneous disappearance of a segment of bone in a short period without the existence of a tumoral disease that justifies it is an exceptional event. We report the case of an older adult in whom the upper epiphysis of the right humerus and part of the acromion disappeared in a period of 3 weeks in the absence of a malignant tumor. Bone biopsy revealed osteoclasts, lymphatic vessels, and blood vessels. This disorder was first reported in 1838 and in 1955 it was established as a specific disease by Gorham and Stout. Since then, it has been named in their honor.

Gorham-Stout disease with involvement of the jaws: a systematic review.

The purpose of this study was to systematically review all published cases of Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) involving the jaws and to identify the clinico-radiological and histopathological features associated with persistence of the lesions, as well as the best treatment options available. An electronic search was undertaken in November 2018. Eligibility criteria included publications with sufficient information to confirm the diagnosis. Eighty-six publications reporting 89 cases were included. Features observed included symptomatic disease (51.1%), swelling (34.1%), pathological fracture (31.8%

An overview of the neurosurgical implications, pathophysiology, diagnosis and recent treatment strategies for Grade IV idiopathic osteolysis, also known as Gorham-Stout or phantom bone disease.

OBJECTIVE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD), commonly referred as vanishing bone or phantom bone disease, is a rare disorder characterized by spontaneous bone osteolysis due to proliferation of lymphangiomatous tissue. This disease can involve multiple bones and cause pathologic fractures. The exact cause of GSD is unknown and its severity is unpredictable; the disorder can potentially cause disfigurement or functional disability. According to CARE guidelines, we studied a 46 years old lady with a progressive defect of the skull. Differential diagnosis included: benign and malignant diploic lesions

Vanishing bone disease: review and case reports.

Vanishing bone disease is a rare idiopathic disease, leading to extensive loss of bony matrix, replaced by proliferating thin-walled vascular channels and fibrous tissue. There are >191 cases reported in the English literature. Gorham and Stout made the first overview of the disease in 1955 and they first presented 24 cases known at that time. The etiology remains speculative, the prognosis unpredictable, and effective therapy still unknown. The disease can be monostotic or polyostotic although multicentric involvement is exceptional. We report 2 cases of a histologically studied vanishing bon

Massive acroosteolysis in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma is a relatively uncommon disease, most often found in Japan, the Caribbean, the southeastern United States, and South America. To date there have been few reports of its skeletal manifestations. A case is reported in a 44-year-old man in which a short history of swelling of the hands and feet and painful motion in the fingers was followed by the rapid development of severe acroosteolysis.

Gorham-Stout disease with parietal bone osteolysis: a case series and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare and idiopathic bone disorder, characterized by massive osteolysis. To date, there is no established treatment strategy for GSD. We empirically treated two patients, who had presented to us with cranial lesions of GSD. Here, we propose a novel algorithm for the management of Gorham's disease based on our experience and review the literature published to date. METHODS: We reviewed all existing literature on GSD describing the pathophysiology and suggested treatment methods, up to 2018. RESULTS: We found 13 papers with 14 reported cases; an inclu

Gorham-Stout disease successfully treated with sirolimus (rapamycin): a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disease characterized by bone lesions and osteolysis. Therapy usually involves surgical resection. Sirolimus (Rapamycin) is used in some patients with GSD but the efficacy and safety of Sirolimus remains unclear. We propose that Sirolimus may be a novel therapeutic for GSD and present a case and review of literature that supports this. CASE PRESENTATION: We presented a 1-year-old boy with GSD involving osteolysis of the right humerus with fracture of the left femur complicated by an effusion in the right pleural cavity. X-rays showed osteolysis

Idiopathic multicentric osteolysis: report of two new cases and a review of the literature.

Idiopathic multicentric osteolysis is a rare skeletal disorder, usually presenting in early childhood with a clinical picture mimicking juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Progressive destruction of the carpal and tarsal bones usually occurs and other bones may also be involved. Chronic renal failure is a frequent component of this syndrome. Mental retardation and minor facial abnormalities have been noted in some patients. We report on 2 unrelated, sporadic cases, one with facial anomalies and the other with nephropathy. Our second patient is the first black child to be diagnosed with this disease

Gorham's disease of the spine.

BACKGROUND: Gorham's disease of the spine is very rare and usually associated with poor prognosis. Till date very few cases have been reported in the literature. It is characterized by osseous invasion by angiomatous vascular mass without skip areas, eventually causing lysis of affected bone. Morbidity and mortality are high in those with spinal and/or visceral involvement. Neurological complications increase the mortality to 33% whereas with chylothorax, mortality increases to more than 50%. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical course and the challenges in planning and implementing effective

Gorham-Stout Disease: a Clinical Case Report and Immunological Mechanisms in Bone Erosion.

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare condition of osteolysis with excessive lymphangiogenesis within bone tissue. The etiology of this condition remains unknown but seems to affect mainly children and young adults of both genders all over the world. Unfortunately, there is no standardized method for diagnosis; however, histopathology remains as the gold standard. This condition is often misdiagnosed due to its varying clinical presentations from case-to-case. Here, we report the case of an 8-year-old girl who presented with chronic mandibular pain during mastication and received multiple antib

[Atypical presentation of Gorham-Stout syndrome: Case report].

Gorham-Stout syndrome is an extremely rare pathology, of unknown etiology. It is characterized by proliferation of vascular channels that causes destruction and reabsorption of the bone matrix. We present a nine year-old male patient with an acute episode characterized by fever, chest pain, respiratory distress and dyspnea. The patient was submitted to computed tomography scan and a biopsy. The findings in the biopsy were multiple lytic lesions, osteolysis, and a mediastinal lymphangioma (lymphangiomatosis). The diagnosis was Gorham-Stout syndrome with atypical presentation.

Complex lymphatic anomalies.

Complex lymphatic anomalies include several diagnoses with overlapping patterns of clinical symptoms, anatomic location, imaging features, hematologic alterations, and complications. Lymphatic malformations likely arise through anomalous embryogenesis of the lymphatic system. Analysis of clinical, imaging, histologic, and hematologic features is often needed to reach a diagnosis. Aspiration of fluid collections can readily define fluid as chylous or not. The presence of chyle indicates dysfunction at the mesenteric or retroperitoneal level or above the cisterna chyli due to reflux. The imaging
