Quantitative Pneumatic Otoscopy Using a Light-Based Ranging Technique.

Otitis media is the leading cause of hearing loss in children. It is commonly associated with fluid in the ear, which can result in up to 45 dB of hearing loss for extended periods of time during a child's most important developmental years. Accurate assessment of middle ear effusions is an important part of understanding otitis media. Current technologies used to diagnose otitis media with effusion are pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and acoustic reflectometry. While all of these techniques can reasonably diagnose the presence of an effusion, they provide limited information about the infec

Confidence-guided integration of otoscopy videos and tympanometry for middle ear disease diagnosis: A multi-center otoscopy study with external paired-cohort evaluation.

Accurate diagnosis of middle ear diseases using otoscopy remains challenging, particularly in primary care settings where clinician experience with otoscopy varies and visual examination alone may not fully capture middle ear physiology. Although AI-based models have shown promise for automated otoscopy interpretation, most rely primarily on visual information, creating an opportunity to improve diagnostic robustness by integrating complementary physiological measurements. Here, we present OtoTymp-AI, a confidence-guided multimodal decision-fusion framework that integrates otoscopy video analy

Development of a microportable imaging system for otoscopy and nasoendoscopy evaluations.

OBJECTIVE: Imaging systems for patients with cleft palate typically are not portable, but are essential to obtain an audiovisual record of nasoendoscopy and otoscopy procedures. Practitioners who evaluate patients in rural, remote, or otherwise medically underserved areas are expected to obtain audiovisual recordings of these procedures as part of standard clinical practice. Therefore, patients must travel substantial distances to medical facilities that have standard recording equipment. This project describes the specific components, strengths and weaknesses of an MPEG-4 digital recording sy

Uses and indications for video-otoscopy in small animal practice.

Acute and chronic otitis externa and otitis media are common disorders in dogs and cats. In combination with other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, the video-otoscope is a useful and effective tool in the management of clinical cases. The enhanced illumination and magnification provide the practitioner with more detailed information for diagnosis and prognosis, and the configuration of the working channel facilitates sampling, improves efficacy of cleaning procedures, and decreases risks of iatrogenic injury to structures of the middle and inner ear. Identification of middle ear effusion by aural acoustic admittance and otoscopy.

The ability of aural acoustic immittance measures and validated pneumatic otoscopy to identify middle ear effusion (MEE) was determined for a group of children with chronic or recurrent otitis media. The measures were made immediately prior to surgery for placement of tympanostomy tubes, with the validating diagnosis of MEE made by the surgeons. Aural acoustic admittance measures were made by a certified and licensed clinical audiologist using an instrument that meets current standards and otoscopic examinations were made by a nurse practitioner validated for use of otoscopy in the identificat

Artificial intelligence and tele-otoscopy: A window into the future of pediatric otology.

Telehealth in otolaryngology is gaining popularity as a potential tool for increased access for rural populations, decreased specialist wait times, and overall savings to the healthcare system. The adoption of telehealth has been dramatically increased by the COVID-19 pandemic limiting patients' physical access to hospitals and clinics. One of the key challenges to telehealth in general otolaryngology and otology specifically is the limited physical examination possible on the ear canal and middle ear. This is compounded in pediatric populations who commonly present with middle ear pathologies

LUCID: Intelligent Informative Frame Selection in Otoscopy for Enhanced Diagnostic Utility.

Background/Objectives: Accurate diagnosis of middle ear disease remains challenging because otoscopic interpretation is subjective, while many artificial intelligence models depend on manually selected still frames from video examinations. We aimed to develop and internally evaluate LUCID, a systematic framework for automatically identifying the most informative frames in otoscopy videos. Methods: We analyzed 713 otoscopy videos from 491 patients. LUCID combines a ResNet-50 classifier for coarse eardrum-visibility assessment, BC-AdvCAM for weakly supervised eardrum localization and coverage es

StyleGAN-based synthetic image augmentation for multi-class otoscopy image classification.

Accurate diagnosis of eardrum abnormalities is pivotal for effectively managing various ear conditions. Otoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, provides detailed views of the ear canal and eardrum to identify pathologies such as otitis media, tympanic membrane perforations, and other abnormalities. Despite advancements, classifying otoscopy images remains challenging due to lighting variations, motion blur, and diverse abnormalities, exacerbated by limited labeled datasets and subjective assessments. A significant barrier to accurate diagnosis is the lack of an objective evaluation meth

LUCID: Intelligent Informative Frame Selection in Otoscopy for Enhanced Diagnostic Utilitys.

Accurate diagnosis of middle ear diseases, such as acute otitis media (AOM), remains a clinical challenge due to the reliance on subjective visual assessment through otoscopy. While deep learning has shown promise in improving diagnostic accuracy using digital otoscopy videos, existing models often rely on manually selected still frames, a step that reduces their practicality in real-world clinical workflows. In this study, we present the first systematic method (LUCID) for automatically identifying the most informative frame (MIF) selection in otoscopy videos. Through analyzing of 713 videos,

Presumed reduction of acute ossicular subluxation by pneumatic otoscopy. Tympanometric evidence.

A 19-year-old college student sustained an otologic injury by striking the side of his face on water after diving off a 5-meter platform. Tympanometry performed immediately after the injury revealed a high-compliance notched tracing that reverted to normal after pneumatic otoscopy. Relevant experimental data on notched tracings in surgically induced ossicular discontinuity is reviewed. This case likely represents ossicular subluxation possibly related to previous otologic trauma and reduced during pneumatic otoscopy.

Potential usefulness of otoscopy in the evaluation of hanging deaths: A report of two cases.

The significance of examination of the tympanic membrane (TM) has been previously reported in cases of strangulation, traumatic asphyxia, and drowning. We report otoscopic findings in two victims of suicidal hanging, including hemotympanum, bleeding from superficial vessels of the TM, perforation of the TM, and gross bulging of the pars-tensa with a bluish hue. These two cases also show petechial hemorrhages in the TM, which is a previously reported finding in cases of hanging. Postmortem otoscopic examination of victims of hanging may provide information useful in the determination of vitalit

Images of otoscopy: rate and extent of non-compliance with good practice standards.

BACKGROUND: The British Society of Audiology has produced clear guidelines as to how otoscopy should be undertaken; however, no nationally recognised guidelines exist for the wider clinical community. Images of otoscopy appear in many books, journals, magazines and websites. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the rate of non-compliance with good practice in images of otoscopy, the seriousness of the breach, and whether this is more common in sites for professionals or the general public. METHOD: Google Images was searched using the terms 'otoscopy' and 'ear examination'. A total of 200

[The application of digital video-otoscopy for diagnostics of various forms of otitis in the children].

Digital video-otoscopy (DVO) is one of the modern high-tech methods for otiatric diagnostics that allows to enlarge the image of the area being examined, i.e. the otoscopic picture. DVO has been shown to facilitate the objective dynamic observation of the clinical course of the disease by means of photo- and videodocumentation of he changes in the tympanic membrane and other otoscopicstructures. The DVO technique makes it possible to substantially improve the quality of diagnostics, detect the middle ear conditions at the early stagesof their alteration, and choose the optimal strategy for the
