Manufacture and measurement of nitrogen oxides.

A decade of research has identified nitric oxide as a unique endogenous biologic mediator with functions as diverse as vasodilation, macrophage cytotoxicity, platelet adhesion, and memory formation. Measurement devices, previously used in research on atmospheric nitrogen oxides, are being adapted for and applied to clinical situations without approval, regulation, or rigorous testing, and with little understanding of how the devices work or their limitations. This article discusses the chemistry, manufacture, and measurement of nitrogen oxides.

Polarographic determination of atmospheric nitrogen oxides.

A new polarographic method is described for the determination of nitrite/nitrogen oxides. The nitrite is first diazotized with p-aminobenzoic acid, followed by coupling to 8-hydroxyquinoline to produce an azo dye. This azo dye is adsorbable on a mercury drop electrode and its reduction is reversible. The linear response range is 6 x 10(-9)-3 x 10(-7) g/ml. The detection limit is 4 x 10(-9) g/ml. This method has been applied to the determination of nitrogen oxides in the air.

Atomic-Level Design of Acid-Base Pairs in Oxides for Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides with Ammonia.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with NH3 (NH3-SCR) poses considerable potential in the abatement of NOx emissions. However, the efficient adsorption and speedy reaction of reactants following the specific mechanism in a favorable way is still a challenge for enhancing catalysis. Herein, we propose the strategy aimed at adjusting electronic properties of Ce-Ov-W acid-base pairs through constructing oxygen vacancies on Ce/WOx, thereby fostering SCR activity. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that Ce-Ov-W acid-base pairs not only provide more Ce3+ sites for promot…

Surface studies of gas sensing metal oxides.

The relation of surface science studies of single crystal metal oxides to gas sensing applications is reviewed. Most metal oxide gas sensors are used to detect oxidizing or reducing gases and therefore this article focuses on surface reduction processes and the interaction of oxygen with these surfaces. The systems that are discussed are: (i) the oxygen vacancy formation on the surface of the ion conductor CeO(2)(111); (ii) interaction of oxygen with TiO(2) (both adsorption processes and the incorporation of oxygen into the TiO(2)(110) lattice are discussed); (iii) the varying surface composit…

Immunoregulatory and antimicrobial effects of nitrogen oxides.

The therapeutic effects of inhaled nitric oxide (NO) therapy are thought to be restricted to the pulmonary vasculature because of rapid inactivation of NO by hemoglobin in the bloodstream. However, recent data suggest that inhaled NO may not only be scavenged by the heme iron of hemoglobin but also may react with protein thiols in the bloodstream, including cysteine-93 of the hemoglobin B subunit. Reaction of NO with protein or peptide thiols is termed S-nitrosylation and results in the formation of relatively stable protein S-nitrosothiols that carry NO bioactivity to distal organs. Thus, inh

Review of the genotoxicity of nitrogen oxides.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed in combustion processes and are major pollutants in urban air. Relatively few studies on the genotoxicity of NO2 and NO have been performed. These studies indicate that NO2 is genotoxic in vitro, but the effect of NO seems to be very slight. One in vivo study showed chromosome aberrations and mutations in lung cells after inhalation of NO2 (and NO), but tests for chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes and spermatocytes or micronuclei in bone marrow were negative after inhalation of NO2. Based on present studies, there is no clear evidence of a carcinogenic poten…

Research on sulfur oxides and nitric oxides released from coal-fired flue gas and vehicle exhaust: a bibliometric analysis.

A bibliometric method was used to evaluate the global scientific publications about sulfur oxides and nitric oxides released by coal-fired flue gas and vehicle exhaust from 1995 to 2018 and to provide insights into the characteristics of the articles and tendencies that may exist in the publications. Performance of publications, research tendency, and hotspots were analyzed. The article number had an explosive growth in 2004 and, then, began to grow steadily. China had an absolutely advantage in publication quantities; however, America had a leading position considering publication cited times…

Analysing the causes of chronic cough: relation to diesel exhaust, ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and other environmental factors.

Air pollution remains a leading cause of many respiratory diseases including chronic cough. Although episodes of incidental, dramatic air pollution are relatively rare, current levels of exposure of pollutants in industrialized and developing countries such as total articles, diesel exhaust particles and common cigarette smoke may be responsible for the development of chronic cough both in children and adults. The present study analyses the effects of common environmental factors as potential causes of chronic cough. Different PubMed-based researches were performed that related the term cough

Effect of oxide formation mechanisms on lead adsorption by biogenic manganese (hydr)oxides, iron (hydr)oxides, and their mixtures.

The effects of iron and manganese (hydr)oxide formation processes on the trace metal adsorption properties of these metal (hydr)oxides and their mixtures was investigated by measuring lead adsorption by iron and manganese (hydr)oxides prepared by a variety of methods. Amorphous iron (hydr)oxide formed by fast precipitation at pH 7.5 exhibited greater Pb adsorption (gamma(max) = 50 mmol of Pb/mol of Fe at pH 6.0) than iron (hydr)oxide formed by slow, diffusion-controlled oxidation of Fe(II) at pH 4.5-7.0 or goethite. Biogenic manganese(III/IV) (hydr)oxide prepared by enzymatic oxidation of Mn(I…

Temperature-insensitive nanomechanical resonators in CMOS oxides.

For nearly a century, quartz has been the material of choice for stable clock generation due to its uniquely temperature-insensitive stiffness, enabling frequency variations of only a few parts per million across wide temperature ranges. However, quartz cannot be monolithically integrated with silicon, and sub-part-per-million or parts-per-billion-class quartz modules require discrete packaging together with temperature sensing and compensation circuitry, or oven-controlled crystal oscillator implementations, adding package volume, assembly complexity, and power overhead. These limitations res

Perovskite oxides for electrocatalytic nitrogen/carbon fixation.

The electrochemical conversion of carbon and nitrogen species provides a sustainable way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and address reactive nitrogen pollution. Perovskite oxides have shown broad application prospects in the field of electrocatalytic carbon/nitrogen fixation attributable to their tunable electronic structure, abundant oxygen vacancies and low cost. Their inherent ability to regulate electronic structure, defect states, and surface coordination environment enables them to selectively activate and convert inert molecules under mild conditions. This paper systematically revie…

Neutrophils, nitrogen oxides, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The etiologic factors responsible for IBD remain only speculative. It does appear that the inappropriate activation of the immune system, whether by immune complex deposition, infectious agents or vascular impairment, is important in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Interaction of certain cytokines known to be produced in human IBD with specific immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages results in the induction of the enzyme NO. synthase with the concomitant release of large amounts of NO.. Nitric oxide is known to mediate many of the pathophysiological alterations associated with IB

Effect of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides to triphenyl phosphate degradation and cytotoxicity on surface of different transition metal salts.

Nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, as the dominant toxic gases in the atmosphere, can induce severe human health problems under the composite pollutant conditions. Currently the effect of nitrogen or sulfur oxides in atmospheric environment to the degradation and cytotoxicity of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on atmospheric particle surfaces still remain poorly understood. Hence, laboratory simulation methods were used in this study to investigate the effect and related mechanism. First, particle samples were prepared with the TPhP coated on MnSO4, CuSO4, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 surface. The results s…

Yeast biomimetic iron‑titanium oxides for electrochemical biosensing.

A yeast cell template technology is described to biomimetically synthesize FeTi oxides. The resulting samples, yeast Fe2O3 and yeast Fe2O3/TiO2, are then employed as active materials for the electrochemical detection of cancer-associated miRNAs. For the perfect matched cancer miR-141, electrochemical analysis shows a main oxidation peak at about +0.4 V, along with a reduction peak at about +0.30 V. For the detection of cancer miR-29c, the introduction of the Ti element is found to stabilize the structure of the resulting materials. These results suggest a potential of the biomimetic FeTi oxide…

Titania-Based Oxide Catalysts for Removing Nitrogen Oxides.

Titania catalysts containing cerium, copper, or iron were obtained using the sol-gel method and tested in the selective reduction of nitrogen oxide. Samples with cerium and iron showed high activity at temperatures ranging from 200 to 400 °C, without the formation of N2O. The materials crystallized in anatase structure, and only a small amount of ceria was detected by XRD. Their crystallites were nanometric in size. The solids were mesoporous, with a specific surface area between 74 and 160 m2/g, determined based on nitrogen sorption at low temperature. The optimum Ce/Ti and Fe/Ti atomic ratio

Catalytic Asymmetric Synthesis of N-Chiral Amine Oxides.

Direct asymmetric synthesis of N-chiral amine oxides was accomplished (up to 91:9 e.r.) by means of a bimetallic titanium catalyst. A hydroxy group situated at the γ-position of the N stereocenter enables the desired N-oxidation through dynamic kinetic resolution of the trivalent amine substrates. The method was further extended to the kinetic resolution of racemic γ-amino alcohols with a preexisting stereocenter, giving an important class of enantioenriched (up to 99.9:0.1 e.r.) building blocks that are otherwise difficult to synthesize.

Biology of nitrogen oxides in the gastrointestinal tract.

Throughout the human gastrointestinal tract a variety of reactive nitrogen oxides are continuously formed as a result of a complex interplay between the host, commensal bacteria and dietary factors. These compounds include nitric oxide, nitrite, nitrate, peroxynitrite, S-nitrosothiols, nitrated fatty acids and N-nitrosamines, all of which are bioactive with the potential to affect physiological and pathological processes locally in the gut as well as systemically after absorption. Historically, the literature has been dominated by studies on the formation of potentially carcinogenic nitrosamin…
