Craniofacial Features of Dwarfism in the Paintings of Velázquez.

This study describes the craniofacial features of achondroplastic dwarfism in the paintings of Velázquez. In a PubMed search, using [Velázquez] and [dwarf], 13 titles were found. In a Google Image search, [Velázquez] and [dwarf] retrieved 5 paintings. The craniofacial manifestations of the dwarfs depicted in the paintings were analyzed. Frontal bossing, antimongoloid slant, depressed nasal bridge (saddle nose), bulbous tip, malar hypoplasia, malocclusion, and chin asymmetry were observed. The presence of each manifestation was checked. In 5 paintings, portraits of 6 dwarfs having craniofacial …

Conservation Issues of Modern Oil Paintings: A Molecular Model on Paint Curing.

The 20th and 21st century oil paintings are presenting a range of challenging conservation problems that can be distinctly different from those noted in paintings from previous centuries. These include the formation of vulnerable surface "skins" of medium and exudates on paint surfaces, efflorescence, unpredictable water and solvent sensitivity, and incidence of paint dripping which can occur within a few years after the paintings were completed. Physicochemical studies of modern oil paints and paintings in recent years have identified a range of possible causal factors for the noted sensitivi…

Pump-probe imaging of historical pigments used in paintings.

A recently developed nonlinear optical pump-probe microscopy technique uses modulation transfer to sensitively extract excited-state dynamics of endogenous biological pigments, such as eumelanin and pheomelanin. In this work, we use this method to image and characterize several inorganic and organic pigments used in historical art. We show substantial differences in the near-IR pump-probe signatures from nominally similar pigments and suggest extensions to art restoration.

Rheumatoid arthritis in paintings: a tale of two origins.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is thought to be a 'recent' disease in that descriptions of it were only noted in the 17th century. However, a study of paintings would suggest that RA could have been present as early as the 15th century, when artists started to paint the human body accurately rather than figuratively. Thus, it was possible to deduce from their paintings the occurrence of various medical conditions. If present, RA with its typical finger deformities should be apparent. This review discusses the known occurrences of RA-type deformities in paintings and places this in the context of th…

The black paintings and the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome.

Francisco Goya, the Spanish painter, suffered from a disease of uncertain etiology which affected his vision, hearing, and balance. The nature of his illness probably was a curious syndrome known today as Vogt-Koyanagi=Harada or uveomeningoencephalytic syndrome. This is an autoimmune disorder which involves the visual and cochlear pigment derived from the neural crest. The common finding in all cases described in the literature is bilateral uveitis. It is interesting to speculate how the period of Goya's artistic output known as the "Black Paintings" might have been created during the time he …

The perils of paint-balling.

While paint-balling a 15-year-old boy was shot on the front of his face guard causing him to hyperextend his neck. Over the next few days he developed neck stiffness and a large painful swelling over his upper left sternocleidomastoid muscle. CT confirmed this to be a haematoma abscess and at operation it was found to originate from the parapharyngeal vessels, extending from the skull base and tracking inferiorly along the carotid sheath, compressing (and partially thrombosing) the internal jugular vein (IJV). After surgical decompression, double-dose low molecular weight heparin and antibioti

Death by paint thinner.

A 38-year-old Caucasian male, reportedly missing for four days, was found dead 40 feet down a steep ravine, apparently after jumping down the cliff. Two rectangular cans of paint thinner, 1-qt and 1-gal sizes, were found in his vehicle at the top of the cliff. The autopsy report indicated that the decedent was normal except for the heart and myocardium, the lung parenchyma, and the gastric and esophageal mucosa. The stomach contents revealed a brownish liquid with a nearly clear, thick, oily film, and the small and large bowels showed oily liquid with a strong odor of a petroleum distillate. T

Nosebleed of children in painting.

In 13 paintings and drawings, dating from the preclassic period in ancient Greece to the present day, representations of children with nosebleed could be detected in museums, churches, galleries and art-books. Children and adolescents were bleeding from their noses because of mechanical injury, infectious diseases, or hemorrhagic diathesis. Some artists depicted nosebleeding in a very realistic manner, others represented this symptom in a more abstract or caricaturistic way. Nosebleed stood as a symbol for human failure, as a sign of the loser, the suffering and tortured child, and as a sign o…

Subjective norms of paintings: Integrating perceptual, cognitive, and emotional dimensions.

Artworks, such as paintings, are frequently utilized as stimuli in research and interventions. However, the complexity of their perceptual, emotional, and cognitive properties necessitates rigorous validation to ensure the reliability of research outcomes and the efficacy of their application in real-world contexts. A few studies have already established norms for paintings. Still, the type of stimuli (e.g., artificial intelligence [AI]-generated) and the comprehensiveness of the assessed dimensions may not entirely capture the complexity of human-made ecological artworks. The current study es…

Multitechnique Characterization of Pigments Used in Paintings by Léon Pallière.

This study provides a microanalytical characterization of pigment fragments from the painting "Allegory to the Arts" and two portraits, "Rub … ments, and XRD revealed crystalline raw materials (minerals or their synthetic analogs) used in the paintings. Raman microprobe was particularly useful in identifying pigments, providing a uniquely specific and sensitive means of identifying inorganic and organic compounds.

Judging AI-generated paintings: art-education differences in source classification.

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in generative image models have increased the visual plausibility of AI-generated paintings, raising questions about how viewers attribute image source and whether source-classification performance varies with art-education background. This study examined stimulus-specific patterns of AI/human source classification, differences associated with art education, and participants' self-reported visual judgment cues. METHODS: A total of 356 participants completed a pairwise source-classification task involving six matched pairs of documented human-made paintings and AI…

Heart in art: cardiovascular diseases in novels, films, and paintings.

BACKGROUND: Understanding representations of disease in various art genres provides insights into how patients and health care providers view the diseases. It can also be used to enhance patient care and stimulate patient self-management. METHODS: This paper reviews how cardiovascular diseases are represented in novels, films, and paintings: myocardial infarction, aneurysm, hypertension, stroke, heart transplantation, Marfan's disease, congestive heart failure. Various search systems and definitions were used to help identify sources of representations of different cardiovascular diseases. Th…
