Pancoast tumour presenting as shoulder pain with Horner's syndrome.

A 54-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 4-week history of right shoulder pain radiating down his arm, with some associated sensory loss. Further questioning and examination in the department revealed a classical Horner's syndrome; miosis, partial ptosis and hemifacial anhidrosis. An initial chest X-ray was deemed to be unremarkable; however, further review by a radiologist noted asymmetrical right apical thickening. A subsequent high-resolution CT scan of the chest revealed a right-sided Pancoast tumour. This case highlights the importance of a thorough history and exami

[Subclavian arteriography in Pancoast syndrome. Case report (author's transl)].

A case of Pancoast's syndrome is reported, where subclavian arteriography was the only useful diagnostic procedure to make a diagnosis possible. Utilization and meaning of such a diagnostic technique is discussed, since the typical radiological picture of the syndrome may be lacking, especially in the early stage of the disease. Subclavian arteriography explores th costal-pleuro-vertebral space selectively, being aimed to one of the anatomical structure, the mechanical engagement of which is responsible of the syndrome. Such a technique is advisable even in cases where the Pancoast's syndrome

[Pancoast and Tobias syndrome of benign etiology (author's transl)].

The authors report a case of Pancoast and Tobias syndrome due to a hydatic cyst on the apex of the left lung. This parasitosis is together with tuberculosis and least infrequent benign etiology of Pancoast and Tobias syndrome. In our observation it was a young cyst without complications as opposed to previously reported cases.

Pancoast syndrome due to pulmonary metastasis of sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary liver malignancy, and sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma is a rare malignancy containing both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. CASE REPORT: We report a 64-year-old male patient treated with open right trisectionectomy for a 16cm right hemiliver tumour. The diagnosis of sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma was confirmed on histology. Five months after hepatic resection, patient had symptoms suggestive of Horner's syndrome along with left sided shoulder pain, hand weakness, reduced power of the intrinsic hand muscles a

Small Cell Lung Carcinoma with Pancoast Syndrome: A Case Report.

Small cell lung cancer mostly arises centrally in the large bronchi. The literature search revealed very limited cases of small cell lung cancer arising at the upper part of the pulmonary sulcus near the thoracic inlet as superior sulcus tumor and also manifesting with typical Pancoast syndrome. We report a case of a 71 years old male patient, presenting with features of Pancoast syndrome including Horner's syndrome with completed three cycles of chemotherapy resulting in partial response which concludes that small cell lung carcinoma has to be considered despite the clinical findings like pan

Pancoast syndrome: an unusual complication of pulmonary infection by Staphylococcus aureus.

Pancoast syndrome, which comprises a lower brachial plexus lesion and Horner's syndrome, usually results from local invasion beyond the confines of the lung by an apical lung carcinoma. Other causes are rare. We report the unusual occurrence of a case of Pancoast syndrome caused by a destructive sclerosing fibrosis after pulmonary Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Pancoast's syndrome secondary to infectious etiologies: a not so uncommon occurrence.

Pancoast's syndrome includes Horner's syndrome, atrophy of the hand muscles and shoulder, axilla or arm pain. This syndrome is caused by an apical thoracic lesion, most commonly a bronchogenic carcinoma, which invades the brachial plexus roots and the cervicothoracic sympathetic chain. Several nonmalignant causes are documented in the literature with infection being one. After a case of Pancoast syndrome caused by a methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus empyema, we began a systematic search of the literature to identify case reports/series of Pancoast syndrome secondary to infection. Our

Pancoast syndrome caused by metastasis to the superior mediastinum of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is common in Taiwan. Recently, extrahepatic metastases have developed more frequently in patients due to prolonged survival rates to which improved diagnostic and treatment methods have contributed. We present here a case of a 46-year-old man with an unusual metastasis to the superior mediastinum causing Pancoast syndrome eight months after a right hepatic lobectomy for HBV-related HCC. Early detection and prompt treatment of paraspinal metastasis are important to relieve symptoms and prevent permanent loss of neurological functions.

Hepatocellular carcinoma with Pancoast's syndrome as an initial symptom: a case report.

Pancoast's syndrome refers to a condition consisting of Horner's syndrome and arm pain that is most commonly found in patients with a lung tumor of the superior sulcus invading the upper ribs or spine, lower brachial plexus and sympathetic chain. We report a 76-year-old female who had a thoracic inlet mass that presented as Pancoast's syndrome, showing profound pain, numbness and weakness of the left upper limb. Further evaluation revealed an increased level of serum alpha-fetoprotein (24278 ng/ml), cryptogenic liver cirrhosis and primary hepatocellular carcinoma with protruding T3 vertebra me

[Pancoast's syndrome secondary to neck metastasis with normal radiography of the thorax].

Pancoast's syndrome is characterized by pain in the shoulders and upper extremities, Horner's syndrome, bone loss and hand muscle atrophy. Bronchogenic carcinoma is the most common cause, although other neoplasms or lung infection are occasionally responsible. An apical mass on the chest film can be seen in over 90% of cases, although apical pleural thickening is sometimes the only radiographic finding. We describe a patient whose clinical picture was highly suggestive of Pancoast's syndrome but whose chest film was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a cervical mass adjacent to the b

Pancoast's syndrome following an intrapleural rupture of a hepatic echinococcus cyst.

A case of Pancoast's syndrome due to a hydatid cyst is described. The cyst developed secondarily, after intrapleural rupture of an echinococcus cyst situated in the liver. The patient was operated and the cyst excised. After the operation the pain in the shoulder and the arm disappeared immediately. The Horner's syndrome needed longer to subside. Three years after the operation there is still some constriction of the pupil of the right eye. The development of Pancoast's syndrome due to hydatid disease is very rare and this case--caused by a secondary cyst after intrapleural rupture of a simila

[Pancoast's syndrome (superior pulmonary sulcus tumor): review of the literature].

Pancoast's syndrome is produced by an apical lung tumor, with a local extensión to inferior brachial plexus, paravertebral sympathetic chain, vertebral bodies and first, second and third ribs. Its major cause is the non-small cell lung cancer, and this syndrome may produce shoulder pain and Horner's syndrome. The best diagnostic method is transthoracic needle aspiration, because of its peripheral location. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by complete surgical excision is the preferred approach to these tumors.

Ectopic ACTH-producing large cell neuroendocrine Pancoast tumour presenting as Horner syndrome.

We present an interesting case where a patient is presented with a droopy left eyelid (as part of Horner syndrome) and Cushingoid features which were a result of a Pancoast tumour (apical lung tumour in superior pulmonary sulcus) involving the left lung. This tumour was secreting ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), a paraneoplastic endocrine phenomenon, which resulted in Cushing syndrome symptomatology. Though most ectopic ACTH-producing lung cancers are either small cell or carcinoid tumours, this was in fact a large cell neuroendocrine cancer (LCNEC). Patient underwent surgical resec

Assessment of vascular involvement with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in Pancoast syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of MRA in determining vascular involvement in bronchogenic carcinoma with Pancoast syndrome. Six patients with Pancoast syndrome were investigated preoperatively by means of MRA. Following standard spin-echo MR imaging in the axial and coronal planes, two successive two-dimensional (2D) time-of-flight acquisitions were obtained in the axial plane, the first with venous, the second with arterial presaturation. MRA data were compared to angiographic data in four cases, and to surgical findings in all six cases. MRA demonstrated displ
