Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, slowly progressive, benign, and chronic fibrous inflammatory disease that affects the adipose tissue of the mesentery. In the present study, we aim to investigate its clinical presentations, computed tomography/sonography scan features, effectiveness of the treatment, and overall prognosis. We investigated various presentations, etiologies, diagnostic approaches, potential treatment modalities, and overall prognosis of mesenteric panniculitis. We present one case of mesenteric panniculitis with abdominal pain, which underwent steroid treatment regimens subseq

A 22-year-old pinto mixed breed mare was admitted for evaluation of severe colic signs and gastric reflux. Multiple nonpainful, variably sized hard masses were palpated in the subcutis over the thorax, abdomen, and hindquarters of the horse. The mare was diagnosed with sterile peritonitis and had systemically high gamma-glutamyltransferase, amylase, and lipase. Three days into treatment she became febrile with signs of persistent and mild abdominal discomfort; euthanasia was elected. Necropsy revealed peripancreatitis, pancreatic fibrosis, abdominal steatitis and panniculitis. Panniculitis ass

Peritoneal disease can manifest at computed tomography (CT) as fluid accumulation within the peritoneal cavity (ascites) or soft-tissue infiltration of the various peritoneal ligaments and mesenteries. Beyond the commonly encountered cases of typical ascites and peritonitis, there is a wide spectrum of uncommon nonneoplastic conditions that may involve the peritoneal and subperitoneal spaces. For example, systemic or organ-based diseases that occasionally involve the peritoneum include eosinophilic gastroenteritis, amyloidosis, extramedullary hematopoiesis, Erdheim-Chester disease, sarcoidosis

Mesenteric panniculitis is a nonspecific inflammatory process affecting the fatty tissue at the root of the mesentery. This term is also used to describe the clinical and imaging findings in this disorder. Mesenteric panniculitis can be a misleading term: it is commonly misused to design an increased density of the mesentery without prejudice regarding the etiology. Pain is the main clinical symptom. Half of the patients are asymptomatic. There is a palpable mass in half of cases. Laboratory tests sometimes reveal an acute phase reaction of varying intensity. Mesenteric panniculitis is suspect

Mesenteric panniculitis also named retractile mesenterite is a rare tumor-like lesion that thickens and shortens the mesentery. It is characterized by the association of inflammation, necrosis or fibrosis involving the adipose tissue of the bowel mesentery. The pathophysiology of this disease remains unclear despite associations with inflammatory diseases or malignancies, especially lymphomas that have been described. When symptomatic, patients may present with abdominal pain, palpable abdominal mass or intestinal obstruction. The disease remains asymptomatic in 30 to 50% of cases. Abdominal C

Mesenteric panniculitis is an extremely rare inflammatory condition of the adipose tissue of unknown etiology in which the mesentery is replaced with fibrosis. Knowledge of this rare syndrome should prevent any unwarranted aggressive therapy and help to use the clinical, radiological, and surgical sources to obtain the diagnosis. This paper is a review of symptomatology, pathology, treatment, and outcome of this disorder. A case report is described that presented with obstruction of the sigmoid colon.

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM), an idiopathic nonneoplastic condition affecting 0.18% to 3.14% of the population, is characterized by chronic fat necrosis, inflammation, and fibrosis most commonly of the mesentery of the small intestine. Sclerosing mesenteritis typically presents in the fifth or sixth decade of life, where patients with a history of abdominal surgery and/or autoimmune disease may be at higher risk. While many patients are asymptomatic, clinical features and complications are related to the mass effect resulting from the inflammation and fibrosis involved in the pathogenesis of S

We describe a patient with abdominal pain and ascites, mesenteric lymphadenitis and peritoneal panniculitis. Initially her ANA was negative. The abdominal pain recurred again three years later and in between the two episodes she had had skin rash, alopecia, arthralgia, and positive Coombs' test-haemolytic anaemia. Her ANA became positive a few years after the initial episode.

An 83-year-old male presented with distended abdomen. A computed tomography scan demonstrated pleural effusion, ascites, peritoneal thickness, and panniculitis. Multiple small white nodules of peritoneum were observed during a laparoscopy examination, and biopsy specimens revealed noncaseating granulomas. Gallium scintigram demonstrated an accumulation in the peritoneum and revealed a panda sign that has been described as an indication of sarcoidosis. Although sarcoidosis rarely induces peritonitis with ascites, peritoneal sarcoidosis was diagnosed and he began receiving steroid therapy. After

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare inflammatory and fibrotic disease of the mesentery of unknown etiology. It has various clinical and radiological manifestations, posing a diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Its diagnosis is indicated via radiologic imaging and is usually confirmed via peritoneal biopsies. We describe a case of a patient with histopathologically proven MP, in which steroid dependence was successfully managed with colchicine.

The case of dermatomyositis complicated with cecum perforation and panniculitis occurred in a 62-year-old woman was reported. She was admitted to Keio University Hospital with a history of proximal muscular weakness, and dysphagia. Physical examination showed erythema over the face and shoulder. Serum level of muscle enzymes was remarkably increased. The diagnosis of dermatomyositis was made based on proximal muscular weakness, elevated serum level of muscle enzymes and myogenic change of electromyocardiogram. The treatment with 60 mg/day of prednisolone was started, and was a good response. H

The largest and most complex serosal membrane in the body, the peritoneum, lines the abdominal cavity, and the abdominopelvic viscera. It is frequently involved in a variety of benign and malignant processes. While secondary involvement of the peritoneum is more common, primary tumors can be a diagnostic challenge. Knowledge of the anatomy is crucial in understanding the various pathologic processes. Cross-sectional imaging plays an important role in diagnosing and evaluating the extent of the disease processes. This article reviews the imaging anatomy of the peritoneum and mesentery and the c
