Bilateral aplasia of paranasal sinuses.

Paranasal sinus anatomical anomalies with unknown etiology are common. Maxillary and/or frontal sinus aplasia or hypoplasia are more common than the other types. Although there are some reports about paranasal sinus anomalies in the literature, there is no case similar to ours, with total paranasal sinus aplasia. Here, we present a unique case of total paranasal sinus aplasia with a symptom of fullness on the face.

[Exophthalmos arising from paranasal sinuses].

INTRODUCTION: Proptosis due to intraorbital process is frequent and secondary to various aetiologies. Its findings in ENT practice is the sign of a serious complication. The purpose of this study is to review a series of patients who presented an exophtalmy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 15 patients with exophthalmos complicating a rhinosinusal benign disease, diagnosed and treated in our department between January 2003 and December 2010. As their management is different, we excluded all cases of orbital cellulitis. RESULTS: Average age of presentation was 38

[Imaging of paranasal sinuses today].

CT is accepted as the gold standard for pathological-anatomical evaluation of paranasal sinus disease, CT is especially considered an obliga … lignant disease or complications of inflammatory sinus disease that extend beyond the limits of the paranasal sinuses. The clinical value of other imaging modalities, including plain film radiography, ultrasound, or scintigraphy, is limited to special indications.

[Inflammatory pseudotumor of paranasal sinuses].

Inflammatory pseudotumor is a rare benign lesion of unknown etiology which was first described in the lung. In head and neck the areas most commonly involved are the orbit and paranasal sinuses, but they have been also described in the larynx, pterygomaxilar space, tonsils, ears, gingiva and other periodontal tissues. We present a case of a 64 years old male who presented a three months history of right nasal obstruction. Physical examination showed a big nasal tumor arising from the nostril. CT scan shows nasal fossa mass with a normal paranasal sinuses. Histology made the diagnosis of an inf…

Neurilemmomas of the paranasal sinuses.

Within the head and neck region, neurilemmomas are rarely found in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. A 70-year-old man presented with complaints of left-sided epiphora, rhinorrhea, epistaxis, and transient diplopia. Nasal endoscopy showed a large necrotic mass filling the left middle meatus. A computed tomography scan showed a large left ethmoid mass, with erosion of the medial wall of the orbit and the anterior cranial base. Multiple biopsies were nondiagnostic. Complete excision of the tumor was performed with endoscopic techniques. Small dural defects were repaired with a middle turbin…

Anatomy of the paranasal sinuses.

This article portrays the anatomy of the ethmoid bone and lateral nasal wall in a detailed, but easily digested form. Understanding the anatomy of the lateral wall of the nose is the cornerstone of competent paranasal sinus surgery.

Leiomyoma of the paranasal sinuses.

The paranasal sinuses are a rare site for tumours of myogenic origin. There has been only one previously reported case in the English literature. We present a case of a leiomyoma filling the anterior ethmoid sinus and middle meatus which was excised via a Patterson's external ethmoidectomy.

Giant mucocele of paranasal sinuses.

A large mucocele of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses with extracranial, intracranial, and intraorbital extension accompanied by total destruction of the left frontal sinus was treated successfully. We chose a two-stage surgical procedure for radical removal of the lesion. It is important to ascertain the degree of dural involvement, not only because extensive involvement of the dura mater presents technical surgical difficulties, but also because this knowledge provides clues regarding the pathology of the lesion. Even after surgical treatment, the mucocele may recur if the patent sinus ostiu

Meningioma of the paranasal sinuses.

Meningiomas originating in the paranasal sinuses are rare. These tumors are thought to arise from embryonal arachnoid nests which were pinched off and left behind during embryonic development. We have described various radiographic findings of two patients with meningioma arising in the paranasal sinuses (frontal sinus origin in a 65-year-old female, and sphenoid sinus origin in a 26-year-old female). The paranasal origin of meningioma was accurately determined on the basis of CT and arteriography. A review of the 11 cases previously reported and our cases indicates that there are no specific …

Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses.

Twenty-eight cases of osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are reviewed. The most common localization was the frontal sinus, secondly the ethmoid sinus. Primary osteomas of the maxillary and sphenoid sinus are very rare. The most common complaint was pain. Clinical examination revealed deformity of the forehead and/or face in 13 patients, seven had dislocation of the eyeball as well. In eight cases x-ray, including tomography, and operation showed exposed dura. This gives a potential risk of intracranial complications, demonstrated by one of our patients who had a defect in the dura, and conseque…

Meningoencephalocele of the paranasal sinuses.

Meningoencephaloceles are not commonly seen by the otolaryngologist. They occur most frequently in the lumbosacral area where they are five times as common as in the occipital area. The anterior cranial presentation is quite rare. Most patients with meningoencephaloceles present early with large lesions and are treated by the neurosurgeon. Two patients are presented who had small meningoencephaloceles which are located in the paranasal sinuses and successfully treated by an extracranial approach. This approach is recommended for those lesions of the paranasal sinus where the resulting bony def…

[Paranasal sinusitis in children].

Sinus x-rays were taken of all children admitted for surgery to the ENT Department of Bochum for one year. 43.9% of 273 children and 29% of 14 healthy control children showed opacities of the maxillary sinuses. As described previously, sinusitis in childhood produces few symptoms. Patients with nasal obstruction due to adenoids did not show a higher incidence of pathological changes on sinus x-rays. Children with sinusitis did not have a higher rate of combined chronic otitis media, chronic bronchitis and chronic tonsillitis than the patients without pathological changes on the sinus x-rays.

Epiphora and unrecognized paranasal sinuses pathology.

PURPOSE: to report five patients all presenting with persistent unilateral epiphora as a sign of unexpected and rare lesions causing Secondary Acquired Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction (SANDO) and the risks associated to an incomplete diagnostic work-up. OBSERVATIONS: the cases presented are: (1) Fungus ball, (2) Pyogenic granuloma, (3) Sinonasal inverted papilloma (4) Sinonasal inverted papilloma with synchronous squamous cell carcinoma, (5) Squamous cell carcinoma of the lacrimal sac. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: masses are uncommon but not a rare cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Surgic

Orbital chondrosarcoma arising from paranasal sinuses.

Orbital chondrosarcoma arising from paranasal sinuses or from the nasal cavity with orbital extension is highly unusual. The aim of this report is to describe our multidisciplinary experience in the treatment of three patients with extensive sino-orbital chondrosarcomas. The patients were aged 43, 75 and 63 years, and the tumors originated from the maxillary, sphenoidal, and ethmoidal sinuses, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging studies showed homogeneously hypointense lesions on T1-weighted scans, which were hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Intranasal endoscopic surgery alone or in co…
