PURPOSE: To examine the parent's perspective on how the child's diagnosis of a developmental disability, the weight-management support of the healthcare provider and parental self-care and role modeling influenced the child's weight-related behavior, (i.e. nutrition, physical and sedentary activity).
DESIGN AND METHODS: This qualitative study, guided by Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System's Theory, used a one-on-one semi-structured telephone interview conducted with 15 parents of children 5-16 years of age with spina bifida or Down syndrome. Interviews were professionally transcribed and thema

OBJECTIVES: When assessing pediatric dysphonia, there are different approaches that can be taken in gathering a subjective view of the impact voice difficulties have on a child. Most valid questionnaires require parent-proxy reporting, although it has become increasingly important to gather the views of children themselves. This study reports a pilot study of an adaptation to the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (PVRQoL).
METHODS: A total of 24 parent and child dyads were recruited from a tertiary pediatric voice clinic. Children were aged between 3 years and 8 months and

BACKGROUND: There is a body of evidence that indicates that the cognitions of parents of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) play an important role in influencing parental stress. However, there is a paucity of evidence about the experience of parents of adult children with ID. This study sought to apply a model of parenting stress to mothers of adults with ID. Of particular interest were the parental cognitions of parenting self-esteem and parental locus of control.
METHOD: Face-to face interviews were administered with 44 mothers of adults with ID. They completed the Vineland Adapt

OBJECTIVE: As part of a long-term study of possible effects of early-life otitis media on speech, language, cognitive, and psychosocial development, we tested relationships between parents' ratings of parent-child stress at ages 1, 2, and 3 years, and of their children's behavior problems at ages 2 and 3 years, and the children's cumulative duration of middle-ear effusion (MEE) in their first 3 years of life.
METHODS: We enrolled healthy infants by age 2 months who presented for primary care at 1 of 2 urban hospitals or 1 of 2 small-town/rural and 4 suburban private pediatric practices. We ob

While prior research indicates that parents who were maltreated as children are more likely to engage in negative parenting behaviors, less is known about how mothers' social relationships may influence these practices. Yet parenting behaviors are influenced not only by the individual characteristics of the parent and child, but also by the social context that exists around the parent-child dyad. The aim of the current cross-sectional study was to test a model examining the effect of mothers' exposure to child maltreatment on harsh parenting practices, as observed in the lab, and the mediating

Many studies have reported an effect of childhood maltreatment and parenting behavior with the future development of psychopathic traits. However, there is a limited amount of research on parenting behavior and adult psychopathic traits as possible identifiers of childhood maltreatment. The aim of this study is three-fold (1) identify specific parenting behaviors and adult psychopathic traits that predict forms of childhood maltreatment, (2) explore gender differences, and (3) expand on other studies on psychopathy by focusing on a representative sample of the community. There are significant

PURPOSE: We assess parent-child agreement regarding child's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children operated for congenital glaucoma (CG).
METHODS: A total of 121 children aged 8 to 18 years (mean age, 11.8 years) operated for CG (mean duration since surgery, 10.2 years) and their parents (mean age, 36.5 years) completed the child and parent versions of the Kidscreen-27 questionnaire, respectively. Psychometric properties of Kidscreen-27 were assessed using Rasch analysis, and child-parent agreement regarding child's HRQoL was investigated using the Bland-Altman limits of agreement

Parents of children with chronic disorders have an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to parents of healthy children. Remarkably, parents of children with a metabolic disorder reported an even lower HRQoL than parents of children with other chronic disorders. Possibly, the uncertainty about the course of the disease and the limited life expectancy in many metabolic disorders are important factors in the low parental HRQoL. Therefore, we performed a cross-sectional study in parents of children with phenylketonuria (PKU, OMIM #261600) and galactosemia (OMIM #230400), metabo

Much attention has been paid to empathy as a concept necessary to the therapeutic relationship and successful outcome with clients. Less attention has been paid to the importance of empathy in the parent-child relationship. Even less attention has been paid to empathy as it relates to the presence or absence of child abuse in the parent-child relationship. While early literature on child abuse eluded to the parents' ability or inability to empathize with the child, recent emphasis on risk assessment and studies of variables used as factors to predict risk of abuse do not include parental empat…

The maternal-foetal bond (MFB) is the affectionate relationship between a mother and unborn child, and pregnancy-related anxiety (PrA) is a specific and distinct anxiety. Both are associated with adverse maternal/infant outcomes, but few have examined their relationship. Addressing previous limitations and gaps in the literature, this study examined the relationship between PrA and MFB, and factors (i.e., partner support, pregnancy and foetal sex happiness) that may influence this relationship. The final sample (N = 470, M = 29.72, SD = 4.38) of pregnant women were recruited using a variety of

BACKGROUND: Chronic or acute medical conditions greatly impact the diagnosed child and their parents. Parents have to deal with an accumulation of stressful and potential traumatic events, which can lead to post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A first-choice evidence-based treatment for PTSD is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), usually delivered in multiple sessions over weeks or months. Currently, parents do not receive this treatment due to barriers, such as time constraints, limited focus on own wellbeing, and lack of reimbursed

This study evaluated the factor structure of the scores from a parent rating scale, the Parent Cognitive Error Questionnaire (PCEQ), which measures parents' attributions of child misbehavior and problems. The factor structure of the scores of the PCEQ was examined among 199 children (ages 7-11; mean age: 8.64 years, 58.30% boys, 53.80% White) with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Predominantly Inattentive Presentation. Reliability and validity of the factors were assessed. Two factors emerged from this sample: (1) parent-specific cognitive errors (self-blame for child problems)

BACKGROUND: A chronic illness, such as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), has an impact on the whole family, especially on parents caring for the ill child. Therefore the aim of this study is to evaluate parental Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and parental perceptions of child vulnerability (PPCV) and associated variables in parents of a child with JIA.
METHODS: Parents of all JIA patients (0-18 years) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, were eligible. HRQOL was measured using the TNO-AZL Questionnaire (TAAQOL) and PPCV using the Child Vulnerability Scale (CVS). The HRQOL of parents of a

INTRODUCTION: Parent-child estrangement is a prevalent yet understudied phenomenon, with existing research largely emphasizing circumstantial and cultural explanations while overlooking the potential role of personality. Guided by Five-Factor Theory, the present study examined whether Big Five personality traits and their lower-order aspects predict estrangement outcomes among parents and adult children within strained relational contexts.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, participants (N = 520; 368 parents, 152 adult children) were recruited from an online parent-child estrange

War-related trauma has detrimental effects on millions of individuals worldwide, including infants, toddlers, and their parents. Among various adverse outcomes, this trauma may significantly disrupt the essential sense of security crucial for fostering a healthy early parent-child relationship. Yet, research on the effects of war-related trauma on parent-child relationships remains limited. This study aimed to bridge this gap by synthesizing evidence from empirical studies focused on war-related trauma and early parent-child relationship outcomes from 0 to 3 years. Studies were identified by s…

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse is an important health problem that disrupts the physical and mental health of children. In order to protect children from abuse, the knowledge and attitude levels of their families need to be increased.
PURPOSE: This study was to determine the knowledge and attitude levels of Syrian refugee parents regarding child sexual abuse who lived in Turkey.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The study was carried out using a cross-sectional, descriptive, relationship-seeking design. A personal information form and the Child Sexual Abuse Knowledge/Attitude Scale for Parents (CSAKAS) we

Influences on social cognition, such as hostile attribution biases, are a relatively understudied topic despite the association of hostile attribution biases with important developmental and clinical outcomes. From a developmental perspective, it is particularly important to understand the early development of biases regarding how the intentions of others are perceived, especially in the relationship context. Therefore, understanding potential correlates, such as parental influences, of such biases during early childhood may be especially important. The current study (N = 121) was designed to

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to: Evaluate the evidence regarding parental and child characteristics related to early-onset disordered eating.
ABSTRACT: Eating disorders are rare in children, but disordered eating is common. Understanding the phenomenology of disordered eating in childhood can aid prevention of full-blown eating disorders. The purpose of this review is to systematically extract and synthesize the evidence on parental and child characteristics related to early-onset disordered eating. Systematic searches were conducte

This study examined the role of nonoffending parental support in the relationship between child sexual abuse (CSA) and later romantic attachment, psychiatric symptoms, and couple adjustment. Of 348 adults engaged in stable romantic relationship, 59 (17%) reported sexual abuse. In this subgroup, 14% (n=8) reported parental intervention after the abuse was disclosed (i.e., support), 15% (n=9) reported a lack of parental intervention after abuse disclosure (i.e., nonsupport), and 71% (n=42) reported that their nonabusive parent(s) was(were) unaware of their abuse. Results indicated that, compared

This study examined the specificity of relations between parent or caregiver behaviors and childhood internalizing and externalizing problems in a sample of 70 fourth-grade children (64% boys, M age = 9.7 years). Specificity was assessed via (a) unique effects, (b) differential effects, and (c) interactive effects. When measured as unique and differential effects, specificity was not found for warmth or psychological control but was found for caregiver's use of behavior control. Higher levels of behavior control were uniquely related to lower levels of externalizing problems and higher levels
