A cross-sectional study of Angiostrongylus malaysiensis in rats and gastropod hosts from recreational parks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Detection, risk factors and pathology.

Angiostrongylus malaysiensis is a potential zoonotic parasite, which reported to co-occur with A. cantonensis in human cerebrospinal fluid. It is a heteroxenous nematode that primarily develops through the early larval stages in gastropods and attains sexual maturity within rats. This study was conducted to determine the host species responsible for the reservoir of A. malaysiensis and investigate the risk factor for transmission among the hosts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sampling was conducted in six recreational parks. The rats were trapped alive using steel wire traps with bait, while the g

Assessment of costs for implementation of park specific tick management plans for selected high-use recreational areas in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Tick-borne diseases are a major public health threat in the United States, with Lyme disease being the most commonly reported vector-borne disease. Tick-bite prevention is predominantly focused on education and the use of repellents. Currently, the use of tick control interventions is rare, particularly on public properties, in part because deployment costs can be difficult to determine. This study focused on New Jersey, where both Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) are common throughout much of the state and there is a high incidence of tick-borne diseases.

The potential risk of human exposure to tick borne infection by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia microti in selected recreational areas of the Poprad Landscape Park in southern Poland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Ticks (Acari:Ixodida) are dangerous ectoparasites and, at the same time, vectors and/or resevoirs of many pathogens, among others Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti. These ethiological agents of Lyme borreliosis, anaplasmosis and babesiosis are transferred to humans mainly by ticks during feeding. The aim of this study was to estimate the potential risk of human exposure to tick borne infection of B. burgdorferi s.l., A. phagocytophilum and B. microti in selected areas of Poprad Landscape Park in southern Poland [PLP]. [The role of the forest and public parks in Hungarian health].

The author presents a survey of the effects exercised by the public parks on the environment. The beneficial effect on climate, air pollution and the reduction of noise is stated mainly based on the results of investigations carried out in Hungary. The usefulness of public parks is reviewed from the standpoint of hygiene (environmental protection, recreation, therapy). The importance of the public parks and other green areas for recreational purposes is particularly stressed using Hungarian data as a basis. Some details are made known concerning the urban parks, their development between 1961

"Green transit-oriented development": Exploring the association between TOD and visible green space provision using street view data.

Environmental inequalities generated by transit-oriented development (TOD) are of planning and policy relevance in developing countries. Existing literature has pointed out that TOD has the effect of 'place making', which means the newly developed transit systems may be able to change the environment and amenities of a certain area. While previous studies have largely focused on environment hazards such as noise and pollution induced by transit systems, scant attention has been paid to visible green space provision at station areas. This study develops a new and systematic framework to assess

Effect of greenness on asthma in children: A systematic review.

Greenness such as trees, plants, and shrubs may positively influence mental and physical health, but the relationship between greenness and asthma is poorly understood. Because asthma is the most prevalent child respiratory disease internationally, elucidating the role of greenness may substantially benefit public health. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize findings related to effects of greenness on asthma in children. Following PRISMA guidelines, six databases were searched for international publication of primary research results relevant to the relationship between gree

WormWatch: Park soil surveillance reveals extensive Toxocara contamination across the UK and Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Toxocarosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease, but sources of infection are not well documented over large geographical scales. To determine levels of environmental contamination, soil from 142 parks and recreational areas across the UK and Ireland was assessed for the presence of Toxocara. METHODS: Toxocara ova (eggs) were isolated from soil samples by sieving and flotation and then enumerated. Individual eggs were isolated and imaged, and a subset was characterised by species-specific PCR and Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: Characteristic Toxocara-type eggs were found in 8

Survive, revive, and thrive: The impact of COVID-19 on global park visitation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had detrimental effects on both the physical and psychological well-being of individuals. Throughout the pandemic and in response to various policies, such as lockdowns, movement restrictions and social distancing measures, parks and greenspaces received renewed attention as people used them to help cope with the adverse effects of the pandemic. This study explored the factors influencing park and greenspace visitation at different stages of the pandemic in 2020, 2021, and 2022, from both global and regional perspectives. Data were collected primarily from Our World i

Mobile application traffic reveals multifunctional use patterns in Parisian parks.

Urban parks play a key role in supporting public health. Landscape architecture typically considers parks through the lens of form and function. While past research on equitable access has focused mainly on park form, studies addressing functional uses have been constrained by limited scale and coarse measurement techniques. Existing efforts have partially quantified park functions through small-scale surveys and movement data (e.g.,GPS, check-ins) or general usage data (e.g.,CDR), but have not effectively captured the specific activities and motivations underlying park visits. As a result, ou

Credibility of the evidence on green space and human health: an overview of meta-analyses using evidence grading approaches.

BACKGROUND: Green space is an important part of the human living environment, with many epidemiological studies estimating its impact on human health. However, no study has quantitatively assessed the credibility of the existing evidence, impeding their translations into policy decisions and hindering researchers from identifying new research gaps. This overview aims to evaluate and rank such evidence credibility. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline, we systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases for systematic reviews with meta-analyses concerning green spaces an

Association of NO2 with daily hospital admissions for mental disorders: Investigation of the modification effects of green spaces and long-term NO2 exposure.

Air pollution is a risk factor for increased hospital admissions due to mental disorders, while green spaces have been linked with better mental health. We linked daily hospital admission records from Wuhan's 74 municipal hospitals from 2017 to 2019 with modeled annual average NO2 concentrations and added data on the residential surrounding green spaces with 250 m and 500 m buffers based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using a land use regression model (LUR). The conditional logistic regression model was used to estimate the acute effect of short-term NO2 exposure, and str

Assessing the Environmental Impacts, Condition and Sustainability of Mountain Biking Trails in an Urban National Park.

Mountain biking is a popular recreational activity in natural areas, with thousands of formal trails designed, constructed and maintained by land managers. Increasingly, there are also rising numbers of informal trails created by riders. A challenge for land managers is identifying, assessing, and then mitigating environmental impacts created by trails, including in protected areas. Here we assessed mountain biking trails in a large, popular national park on the Gold Coast, Australia, addressing the currently limited research comparing the extent, environmental impacts, condition and sustainab

Active use and perceptions of parks as urban assets for physical activity: A mixed-methods study.

Parks are potential key urban assets for improved population health; however, their use is not equal among all social groups. Individual and contextual factors could influence residents' perceptions of parks and how they interact with and, eventually, benefit from them. The use of complementary methodologies provides a deeper understanding of the relationship between park use, physical activity (PA), and residents' perceptions. Thus, we designed a mixed-methods study to analyze differences in park use and PA, and the perceptions of parks as urban assets for PA. We selected six parks from three

Interpretable assessment of human-perceived street-level urban greenery quality via panoptic segmented visual features.

Street-level urban greenery shapes pedestrians' environmental experiences and psychological well-being, making accurate assessments essential. However, metrics such as the Green View Index primarily focus on the number of green pixels and often overlook the qualitative attributes that influence perception. Consequently, the automated assessment of perceived greenery quality remains limited and fails to explain the factors driving human preference. This study proposes an interpretable machine learning framework for predicting the perceived quality of urban greenery from street-view images. Gree

The larvae of Cora inca Selys, 1873 and Polythore gigantea (Selys, 1853) from Colombia (Odonata: Polythoridae), with a larval diagnoses of some genera in the family.

The larvae of Cora inca Selys, 1873 and Polythore gigantea (Selys, 1853) were found in first and second order forested streams at the Tatamá Natural National Park in the Colombian Western Andes. Their final larval stadia are here described and figured. Cora inca differs from the larvae of C. cyane Selys, 1853 and C. marina Selys, 1868 by a combination of features including presence of an irregular patch of minute, gray scales to each side of the ventral midline on the ventral pad of hypopharynx, paraprocts with five projections, and the position of epiproct and paraproct projections. Higher surrounding green space is associated with better attention in Flemish adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies suggested that green space is beneficial for the cognitive development in children. However, evidence in adolescents is limited. Therefore, we aim to investigate green space exposure in association with attention and behaviour in adolescents. METHODS: This study includes 596 Flemish adolescents between 13 and 17 years old. Attention was assessed with Stroop Test (selective attention) and Continuous Performance Test (sustained and selective attention). Behaviour was determined based on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Green space was estimated in sev

Competition between obligate and facultative scavengers and infection: vulture-jackal-anthrax dynamics in Etosha National Park.

Different species of scavengers may compete for the same food in an ecosystem. This case study considers the competition between jackals and vultures in Etosha National Park in Namibia. While jackals are facultative scavengers, able to hunt for food if necessary, vultures are obligate scavengers wholly dependent on carcasses of animals like zebras for persistence. This competition may be further affected by outbreaks of infections such as anthrax, which temporarily increase the number of carcasses but lower the zebra population, acting in some ways as a third competitor. We use a dynamical sys

Does the economy influence dynamic green exposure? A comparative study of spatial heterogeneity in visible greenery during running between high-and low-income groups.

Visible Green Space during Running (VGSR) has a significant impact on physical and mental health. However, current studies mostly focus on the green environment of specific static locations (such as residential areas and parks) from a spatial perspective, without fully addressing the issue of equitable access to green resources for dynamic groups with different socioeconomic characteristics. This study utilized running trajectory data to identify runners' trajectories and quantified the visible green environment and green landscape patterns within their running spaces.
