Crowding is the inability to recognize an object in clutter, usually considered a fundamental low-level bottleneck to object recognition. Here we advance and test an alternative idea, that crowding, like predictive phenomena such as serial dependence, results from optimizing strategies that exploit redundancies in natural scenes. This notion leads to several testable predictions: crowding should be greatest for unreliable targets and reliable flankers; crowding-induced biases should be maximal when target and flankers have similar orientations, falling off for differences around 20°; flanker i

Does recognizing the transformations that gave rise to an object's retinal image contribute to early object recognition? It might, because finding a partially occluded object among similar objects that are not occluded is more difficult than finding an object that has the same retinal image shape without evident occlusion. If this is because the occlusion is recognized as such, we might see something similar for other transformations. We confirmed that it is difficult to find a cookie with a section missing when this was the result of occlusion. It is not more difficult to find a cookie from w

Research on face perception has revealed highly specialized visual mechanisms such as configural processing, and provided markers of interindividual differences -including disease risks and alterations- in visuo-perceptual abilities that traffic in social cognition. Is face perception unique in degree or kind of mechanisms, and in its relevance for social cognition? Combining functional MRI and behavioral methods, we address the processing of an uncharted class of socially relevant stimuli: minimal social scenes involving configurations of two bodies spatially close and face-to-face as if inte

Peripheral letter recognition is fundamentally limited not by the visibility of letters but by the spacing between them, i.e., 'crowding'. Crowding imposes a significant constraint on reading, however, the interplay between crowding and reading is not fully understood. Using a letter recognition task in varying display conditions, we investigated the effects of lexicality (words versus pseudowords), visual hemifield, and transitional letter probability (bigram/trigram frequency) among skilled readers (N = 14. and N = 13) in Hebrew - a script read from right to left. We observed two language-un

The spatial location of the face and body seen in daily life influences human perception and recognition. This contextual effect of spatial locations suggests that daily experience affects how humans visually process the face and body. However, it remains unclear whether this effect is caused by experience, or innate neural pathways. To address this issue, we examined the development of visual field asymmetry for face processing, in which faces in the upper visual field were processed preferentially compared to the lower visual field. We found that a developmental change occurred between 6 and

The additional singleton paradigm, introduced in the early 1990s, has become a cornerstone in attention research and the study of attentional capture. In this task, observers search for a unique target singleton while an irrelevant, but salient distractor singleton is also present. Decades of research have demonstrated that such distractors reliably slow responses, supporting a stimulus-driven account of attentional selection. This paper reviews the origins of the paradigm, key findings, and ongoing debates, with particular focus on design features that shape results. Critical factors include

Visual words and faces differ in their structural properties, but both are objects of high expertise. Holistic processing is said to characterize expert face recognition, but the extent to which whole-word processes contribute to word recognition is unclear, particularly as word recognition is thought to proceed by a component-based process. We review the evidence for experimental effects in word recognition that parallel those used to support holistic face processing, namely inversion effects, the part-whole task, and composite effects, as well as the status of whole-word processing in pure a

Pure alexia and prosopagnosia traditionally have been seen as prime examples of dissociated, category-specific agnosias affecting reading and face recognition, respectively. More recent accounts have moved towards domain-independent explanations that postulate potential cross-links between different types of visual agnosia. According to one proposal, abnormal crowding, i.e. the impairment of recognition when features of adjacent objects are positioned too closely to each other, might provide a unified account for the perceptual deficits experienced by an agnosic patient. An alternative approac

It has been suggested that the right hemisphere lateralization typically observed for face processing may depend on lateralization of written word processing to the left hemisphere; a pattern referred to as the causal complementary principle of lateralization. According to a strong version of this principle, a correlation should be found between the degree of left and right hemisphere lateralization for word and face processing respectively. This has been observed in two studies, but only for left-handed individuals. The present study tested whether a similar lateralization pattern could be fo

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with difficulties in the perception and recognition of faces. However, the extent to which DP affects non-face object is an ongoing debate. In this study, we asked whether pareidolic objects (which give rise to the perception of a face) are also affected in DP. First, we compared performance in DPs (n = 30) and controls (n = 27) on a recognition task with faces, pareidolic objects and non-pareidolic objects (bottles). The pareidolic objects had either similar or dissimilar image statistics to faces. Consistent with ou

Decades of work demonstrate that the ventral temporal cortex (VTC) comprises category selective regions. Ritchie et al. urge a shift in perspective: new research should be grounded in behavioral relevance, not category selectivity. Here, we outline how leveraging, not shifting away from category selectivity, expands our understanding of brain function, complex cognition, and development. Further, while we agree that naturalistic paradigms will accelerate progress in this field, given category selectivity is central to VTC's information processing, we suggest future work to examine information

Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) all exhibit impairments in face memory, but the specificity of these face memory impairments is debated. One problem is that standard behavioural tasks are not able to provide independent measurement of face perception, face memory, and face matching (the decision process required to judge whether two instances of a face are of the same individual or different individuals). The present study utilised a new test of face matching, the Oxford Face Matching Test (OFMT), and a novel analysis strategy to derive these independent indices. Twenty-nine

Acquired prosopagnosia is usually a consequence of bilateral or right hemisphere lesions and is often associated with topographical disorientation and dyschromatopsia. Left temporo-occipital lesions sometimes result in a face recognition disorder but in a context of visual object agnosia with spared familiarity feelings for faces, usually in left-handers. We describe a patient with a left temporo-occipital hemorrhagic lesion unexpectedly resulting in a deficit of face familiarity, which could represent a mild form of associative prosopagnosia. Our patient failed to feel familiarity feelings ev

Verbal overshadowing refers to a phenomenon whereby verbalization of non-verbal stimuli (e.g., facial features) during the maintenance phase (after the target information is no longer available from the sensory inputs) impairs subsequent non-verbal recognition accuracy. Two primary mechanisms have been proposed for verbal overshadowing, namely the recoding interference hypothesis, and the transfer-inappropriate processing shift. The former assumes that verbalization renders non-verbal representations less accurate. In contrast, the latter assumes that verbalization shifts processing operations

In right-handed adults, face processing is lateralized to the right hemisphere and visual word processing to the left hemisphere. According to the many-to-many account (MTMA) of functional cerebral organization this lateralization pattern is partly dependent on the acquisition of literacy. Hence, the MTMA predicts that: (i) processing of both words and faces should show no or at least less lateralization in individuals with developmental dyslexia compared with controls, and (ii) lateralization in word processing should be normal in individuals with developmental prosopagnosia whereas lateraliz

This paper presents the Visual Attention Engine (VAE), which is a digital cellular neural network (CNN) that executes the VA algorithm to speed up object-recognition. The proposed time-multiplexed processing element (TMPE) CNN topology achieves high performance and small area by integrating 4800 (80 × 60) cells and 120 PEs. Pipelined operation of the PEs and single-cycle global shift capability of the cells result in a high PE utilization ratio of 93%. The cells are implemented by 6T static random access memory-based register files and dynamic shift registers to enable a small area of 4.5 mm(2

Perception is the understanding by the brain of the different sensory information. In humans, information is mostly visual and is conveyed to the occipital cortex. MRI techniques suggest that it is deciphered in different areas of the temporal cortex, depending upon the observed scene. The neural codes used by neurons of these areas will be discussed in two instances: Recognition of written words and of faces. In the first case, an hypothesis using basic properties of neurons and hierarchy of local combination detectors, accounts for the invariance of their visual form. That it is relevant is

Infants respond preferentially to faces and face-like stimuli from birth, but past research has typically presented faces in isolation or amongst an artificial array of competing objects. In the current study infants aged 3- to 12-months viewed a series of complex visual scenes; half of the scenes contained a person, the other half did not. Infants rapidly detected and oriented to faces in scenes even when they were not visually salient. Although a clear developmental improvement was observed in face detection and interest, all infants displayed sensitivity to the presence of a person in a sce
