Renal pelvic neoplasms and atypical urothelium in patients with end-stage analgesic nephropathy.

In a series of 772 renal transplant patients, 84 had analgesic nephropathy (AN). Four of them had renal pelvic carcinoma. The incidence of atypical urothelial changes of the renal pelvis was studied in 56 AN patients, the majority nephrectomized before or shortly after the renal transplantation. Urothelial atypia, usually bilaterally, was found in 27 patients. Multiple sections resulted in an even higher incidence (8/9). No atypical changes were found in normal kidneys or in end-stage diseased kidneys with other diseases, or in chronically rejected renal allografts. These findings further stre

Multifocal polypoid endometriosis in a young woman simulating vaginal and pelvic neoplasm.

A 27-year-old nulliparous woman presented with large finger-like projections protruding from her vagina. Intraoperatively there were deposits in the pouch of Douglas. Clinical presentation and history of vaginal bleeding suggested malignancy. Histopathology of both the vaginal and pouch of Douglas masses showed endometrial glands and stroma. There was no architectural complexity or cytological atypia of glands or stroma. Immunohistochemistry for oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and CD10 was positive. Based on morphological and immunohistochemical findings, multifocal polypoid endometr

Surgical approaches and techniques in intraoperative radiotherapy for intra-abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic neoplasms.

Eighty-five patients with locally advanced intra-abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic malignant diseases have been treated at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) with electron beam intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). In general, IORT was performed after resection to the tumor bed and to areas of locoregional spread. IORT was delivered directly to some unresectable tumors. The median survival for the entire NCI patient group was 13.9 months, with 34% of the patients projected to achieve local control of disease at 5 years. Multiple abutting IORT fields were used in 76% of the patients; they e

Urinary ascites with pelvic urinoma presenting as ovarian neoplasm: clinical and ultrasonographic features.

BACKGROUND: The majority of ureteric injuries associated with an operation are the result of gynecologic surgery. Thus, gynecologists must be aware of this risk and appreciate that ureteric injury can present late and in an unusual manner. CASE: A 26-year-old woman presented with gross abdominal distention 4 months after total abdominal hysterectomy. Ultrasonography demonstrated a large volume of ascitic fluid and a complex cyst arising from the left ovary. Serum blood urea nitrogen and creatinine were normal. Laparotomy showed a mass of 1-2-cm cysts (urinomas) on the pelvic peritoneum and tu

Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Cervical Spine and Pelvic Bone Metastases Presenting as Unknown Primary Neoplasm.

The occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is closely associated with viral hepatitis or alcoholic hepatitis. Although active surveillance is ongoing in Korea, advanced or metastatic HCC is found at initial presentation in many patients. Metastatic HCC presents with a hypervascular intrahepatic tumor and extrahepatic lesions such as lung or lymph node metastases. Cases of HCC presenting as carcinoma of unknown primary have been rarely reported. The authors experienced a case of metastatic HCC in a patient who presented with a metastatic bone lesion but no primary intrahepatic tumor. This

Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in diagnosis of abdominal and pelvic neoplasm in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy of abdominal and pelvic masses in adults has gained tremendous popularity. However, the application of the same treatment in children is not as popular because of apprehensions regarding inadequate tissues for the biopsy and accidental puncture of vital organs. METHODS: Data of the application of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in 105 pediatric patients with clinically or ultrasound-diagnosed abdominopelvic masses were reviewed. Diagnostic procedures were conducted in our institution from May 2011 to May 2013. RESULTS: The biopsies were c

[PET/CT with (18F)FDG in the initial staging of a pelvic kidney neoplasm. A case report].

We report a case of 58-year-old woman referred to our service for an (18)FFDG PET/CT study of initial staging after being diagnosed of a pelvic kidney mass consistent with malignancy. The FDG-PET showed an abnormal mass in the right kidney, a suspicious metastasis versus a second primary tumor in the cortex of the kidney and lymph node infiltration in the paracaval nodes. The histological analysis verification after exeresis of the lesions confirmed the diagnosis of renal metastases. In this article, we present a brief review of the literature published on the role of PET in the characterizati

Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Mimicking Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: A Case Report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are rare clinical entities. These lesions are characterized by an expansive growth pattern and a significant propensity for peritoneal dissemination, potentially leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei. Preoperative diagnosis of appendiceal mucinous neoplasm remains a formidable challenge, particularly in female patients, as clinical presentations often mimic common gynecological pathologies. This report describes the case of a 63-year-old female with a history of schizophrenia and previous pelvic surgeries who presented with generalized colicky abdomi

Lateral pelvic lymph nodes dissection of rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms: A prospective case-series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms are relatively rare. Patients with rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms undergoing radical surgery have a higher rate of lymph node metastases. Robust evidence on the status of lateral pelvic lymph node metastases and the role of lateral pelvic lymph node dissection in those patients is lacking. This case-series study aimed to explore and address these issues. METHODS: This single-center, prospective case series consecutively enrolled patients with biopsy-proven rectal neuroendocrine neoplasms in a tertiary referral hospital between June 2022 and January

Acute and late toxicity of patients with inflammatory bowel disease undergoing irradiation for abdominal and pelvic neoplasms.

PURPOSE: Little data exists in the medical literature describing the response of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to abdominal and pelvic irradiation. To clarify the use of this modality in this setting, this study assesses the short- and long-term tolerance of 28 patients with IBD to abdominal and pelvic irradiation. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1970 to 1999, 28 patients with IBD (10 patients-Crohn's disease, 18 patients-ulcerative colitis) were identified and underwent external beam abdominal or pelvic irradiation. Mean follow-up time after radiation therapy was 32 months. Pati

A search for predictive factors for hypersensitivity reactions to paclitaxel and platinum salts in chemotherapy for gynecologic pelvic neoplasms.

AIMS: To investigate the frequency of and predictive factors for hypersensitivity reactions (HR) to taxanes and platinum salts in a cohort of patients treated for pelvic gynecologic malignancies. METHODS: The medical records of all patients with gynecologic pelvic neoplasms treated with chemotherapy at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, AO Mauriziano Umberto I of Turin, from September 2007 through August 2008, were retrospectively reviewed. Two multivariate models, regarding carboplatin and taxane chemotherapy, respectively, were performed to evaluate the potential predictive value of va

IgG4-related disease of the pelvic floor musculature mimicking neoplasm: a case report with imaging-pathologic correlation.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition that can form tumefactive mass-like lesions and mimic malignancy across organ systems. We describe a rare presentation involving the deep pelvic floor musculature with imaging-pathologic correlation while underscoring diagnostic pitfalls. A 49-year-old man with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus, night sweats, and left lower quadrant abdominal pain underwent CT of the abdomen and pelvis, which demonstrated a right posterior pelvic sidewall mass and retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy. Pelvic MRI demonstrated an

A giant pelvic infiltrating schwannoma misdiagnosed as an ovarian neoplasm that was resected using a laparoscopic approach: A case report.

Introduction and importance: Large retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare and present significant challenges in surgical management, particularly when located in the pelvic region. Gynecologists can encounter rare problems when a pelvic schwannoma is mistaken for an adnexal pathology. Case Presentation: A 62-year-old woman presented with a giant retroperitoneal mass suspected of a potentially malignant ovarian tumor preoperatively. Computed tomography revealed a large mixed solid-cystic mass near the right adnexa measuring 118 × 100 × 80 mm. The cancer antigen 125 level was 196 U/mL. We performe
