Renal scintigraphy with [99mTc]diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and/or sodium-iodine-131-o-iodohippurate (HIP) was performed before and after an oral dose of captopril (50 mg) in 18 patients with renovascular hypertension (RVH) due to renal artery stenosis (RAS) and 18 controls. In every patient with RVH, captopril induced, enhanced or sustained abnormal findings on HIP scintigraphy depending on the degree of RAS. A method for determining EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) based on a highly fluorescent terbium-EDTA-salicylic acid complex formation was developed. EDTA from as low as a few picomoles to as high as several nanomoles can be determined in a microtiter plate in 10-20 min. Ethyleneglycol-bis(2-aminoethoxy)-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) also can be determined by the same method, but its sensitivity is ca. 14-fold lower. Interestingly, diethylenetriamine tetraacetic acid did not form fluorescent complex with terbium under the same conditions.

In 50 renal transplant recipients, we performed radioisotope (RI) deconvolution analysis, as reported by O'Reilly, in 179 renograms from dynamic renal scanning with Tc-99m-DTPA and obtained MTT (mean transit time) and H0 (initial height) values. We found characteristic features of various graft conditions using the combination of MTT and H0.
