[Peptostreptococcus magnus osteoarticular infections after orthopedic surgery. 14 cases and pathogenicity factors].

We report a retrospective study of 14 Peptostreptococcus magnus bone and joint infections, following orthopaedic prostheses or implantation of fixation devices, diagnosed in two Paris hospitals between 1992 and 1996. Five patients experienced a knee joint infection after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with 4 artificial grafts, and 9 caught joint or wound infections, after limb traumatic injuries or bone neoplastic ruptures involving femur, tibia, calcaneum and humerus, treated by arthroplasty or osteosynthesis with implantation of biomaterials. Septic arthritis was experienced one w…

Anaerobic pathogenesis: collagenase production by Peptostreptococcus magnus and its relationship to site of infection.

Fifty isolates of Peptostreptococcus magnus from intraabdominal sepsis, nonpuerperal breast abscess, and diabetic foot infections were examined for collagenase activity using bovine type I collagen. Collagenase production was detected in a higher percentage of strains from nonpuerperal breast and diabetic foot specimens (P less than .001). This enzyme may be responsible for P. magnus playing a more central role in the pathogenesis of nonpuerperal breast abscess and diabetic foot disease than in intraabdominal sepsis.

Uterine Commensal Peptostreptococcus Species Contribute to IDO1 Induction in Endometrial Cancer via Indoleacrylic Acid.

Microbial dysbiosis has an increasingly appreciated impact on carcinogenesis, and the cervicovaginal microbiome plays a critical role in microenvironmental inflammation. Here, we investigated the involvement of the female genital tract Peptostreptococcus species in gynecological cancer via indoleacrylic acid (IAA). IAA production from Peptostreptococcus species and the effect of bacterial culture on tumor growth in vivo were examined. The impact of IAA on cytokine production and indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) expression in an endometrial cancer (EC) cell line, as well as their effect on …

Isolation and characterization of a mucin-degrading strain of Peptostreptococcus from rat intestinal tract.

A mucin-degrading microorganism was isolated from the intestinal tract by serial sectioning from the serosal side of the caecum wall from a conventional rat. The ability of degrading the intestinal water-soluble mucin was present both in vivo after monocontamination of germ-free rats and in vitro, when adding the microbe to Mucin medium. The morphology, Gram-positive cocci single or in short chains and the very weak biochemical activities allow us to place this strain in the species Peptostreptococcus micros.

The "oral-gut axis" transmission of microorganisms in colorectal cancer: Insights from Peptostreptococcus' perspective.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is linked to gut microecological imbalances, and increasing evidence suggests that oral-gut microecosystem aberrant interactions also significantly contribute to CRC pathogenesis. The emerging "oral-gut axis" offers novel perspectives into the cross-organ microbial regulation. Notably, the oral bacterium Peptostreptococcus exhibits spatiotemporal specificity during CRC progression and may modulate gut microecology and CRC via this axis. This review examines the oral-gut microecological interplay and teases apart the multidimensional associations between Peptostreptococc…

Analysis of distribution patterns of Propionibacterium acnes phylotypes and Peptostreptococcus species from acne lesions.

BACKGROUND: The precise roles of Propionibacterium acnes and other anaerobic bacteria in the pathogenesis of acne are still unclear. Recent studies have shown that P. acnes can be further classified into several phylotypes with distinct phenotypes and virulence. Their distribution patterns in acne lesions have rarely been demonstrated. OBJECTIVES: To analyse distribution patterns of P. acnes phylotypes and Peptostreptococcus species on the skin surface of patients with acne and healthy controls, and in comedones, papules and pustules from patients. METHODS: A total of 370 samples from 95 pat…

Severe anaerobic necrotizing pneumonia complicated by pyopneumothorax and anaerobic monoarthritis due to Peptostreptococcus magnus.

A rare case of a severe anaerobic necrotizing pneumonia complicated by pyopneumothorax and monoarthritis due to anaerobic Peptostreptococcus magnus is described in a 20-year-old soldier. The patient's immunological status was normal. There were no predisposing underlying factors, and he was treated successfully without any residual damage. To our knowledge, a similar case has never been reported in the literature.

Peptostreptococcus infective endocarditis and bacteremia. Analysis of cases at a tertiary medical center and review of the literature.

Peptostreptococcus infective endocarditis is rare but associated with high morbidity. We report two cases and evaluate all positive blood cultures for Peptostreptococcus at our institution, followed by a review of the literature. This organism causes a subacute presentation and cardiac valve pathology is a risk factor. Penicillin remains the treatment of choice.

Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Eubacterium, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides isolated from root canals of teeth with periapical pathosis.

Eubacterium, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides were isolated in high frequency from root canals with acute periapical inflammation. The antimicrobial susceptibilities of these strains were studied by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations of different agents. Although all three kinds of isolates were susceptible to penicillins, the isolates other than black-pigmented Bacteroides were less susceptible to cephems, tetracyclines, and macrorides with several resistant strains. All strains were uniformly resistant to aminoglycosides. Some differences in susceptibilities were observed among…

Infection following challenge of the lactating and dry udder of dairy cows with Actinomyces pyogenes and Peptostreptococcus indolicus.

Challenge of 12 mammary glands of cows in mid-lactation with 10(7) colony forming units (cfu) of Peptostreptococcus indolicus on two occasions led to clinical mastitis in only four quarters. The bacteria were rarely recovered and disappeared from the secretion within 14 days. In challenges 7 days prior to drying off eight of 12 quarters became infected and at drying off all quarters challenged became infected. The infections established at drying off persisted well into the dry period. P. indolicus infection was also established in all of 12 dry glands challenged, but usually eliminated at cal…

Peptostreptococcus Anaerobius enhances dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis by promoting nf-κB-NLRP3-Dependent macrophage pyroptosis.

Evidence indicates that gut microbiota is crucial in ulcerative colitis (UC) development. Increased Peptostreptococcus species abundance is linked to UC, but its role and mechanisms in intestinal inflammation are not well understood. This study used a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model in mice, and different bacterial strains were administered via gavage. We assessed clinical manifestations, colonic barrier function, gut microbiota composition, and levels of inflammatory cytokines, NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) signaling molecules, and pyroptosis-re…

Contribution of proteases and plasmin-acquired activity in migration of Peptostreptococcus micros through a reconstituted basement membrane.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Peptostreptococcus micros is a gram-positive bacterium that has been associated with chronic periodontitis and endodontic infections. The aims of this study were to investigate the production of proteases and the acquisition of plasmin activity by rough and smooth morphotypes of P. micros. The contribution of these properties in the migration of bacteria through a reconstituted basement membrane was also evaluated. METHODS: Protease activities were determined using chromogenic and fluorogenic substrates as well as by zymography. Plasminogen binding activity was studied using …

Rapidly progressive pulmonary abscess initially misdiagnosed as lung cancer: the role of Peptostreptococcus stomatis and Parvimonas micra.

Pulmonary abscess is a serious infectious disease characterized by localized lung tissue necrosis, primarily caused by anaerobic or facultative anaerobic bacterial infections. While the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) is a well-established pathogen in pulmonary abscess formation, recent findings suggest that strict anaerobes such as Peptostreptococcus stomatis and Parvimonas micra can also contribute to deep-seated infections. However, their role in rapidly progressive pulmonary abscesses has not been previously documented. Here, we present a case of a rapidly progressive pulmonary abscess…

Beyond the Liver: A Unique Case of Pyogenic Liver Abscess Caused by Peptostreptococcus micros Penetrating the Chest Wall.

Liver abscesses are uncommon pyogenic infections with diverse microbiology, often involving enteric gram-negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Standard management includes antibiotic therapy and abscess drainage. We present a case of a 37-year-old male with chronic right upper quadrant abdominal pain, who was found to have an enlarging liver mass infiltrating the chest wall and right-side chest ribs, ultimately diagnosed as a large pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) extending into the chest wall. Notably, the abscess was attributed to Peptostreptococcus micros, a rarel…

Real-time PCR assay design and validation for Prevotella bivia, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, and Dialister micraerophilus, bacteria associated with increased HIV susceptibility.

Many genital anaerobes, including Prevotella bivia, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, and Dialister micraerophilus, are underexplored despite being Bacteria Associated with HIV Seroconversion, Inflammation, and immune Cells (BASICs). This is partly due to the lack of molecular tools for their detection and quantification. To address this gap, we designed and validated three real-time qPCR assays for rapid and cost-effective analysis. qPCR assays were designed based on the species-specific core genomes of the three target genital anaerobic species. Assay sensitivity, specificity, and quantificatio…

Fusobacterium/Peptostreptococcus - A Case Report of Community- Acquired Empyema Resulting in Surgical Decortication with Prolonged Antibiotic Therapy: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

<p>Background: Infections caused by anaerobic bacteria occur frequently and can be serious and life-threatening. Anaerobes are a rare cause of community-acquired pneumonia with Streptococcus pneumonia and respiratory viruses being the most frequently detected pathogens. We, herein, report a case of Fusobacterium/Peptostreptococcus parapneumonic effusion with empyema in a patient without risk factors for aspiration pneumonia. This case presents an opportunity to discuss an unusual case of community-acquired empyema secondary to anaerobic infection in a patient without the common risk factors fo…
